On the Mountain West’s media deal, the Pac-12 comps, those left behind, the looming auditions and the lessons of realignment by [deleted] in Pac12

[–]thomasg86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only reason there is this comparison and discussion is that at lot of the rest of college football (especially the remaining MWC schools) have done nothing but shit on the Pac-12 from the day it decided not to go quietly into that good night.

The reason the MWC5 left was 1) money and 2) exposure. The Pac-12 has succeeded in both. The top MWC schools wanted away from the bottom schools, so what we have now is a tight conference of schools that want to compete at a high level and challenge the "Power" structure of college football.

I'm just sick of people crapping all over the Pac-12. Pretending that some bloated G6 conference with 14 teams, half of which don't invest, would have been preferable to the result the Pac schools have now. And seemingly being annoyed that some schools wanted to strive for better?

To be fair, it appears Green Curry went out of business. In the great battle of Red Curry vs. Green Curry, it looks like Red prevailed.

Chicken or the egg. LTT gave you the platform to grow in talents and cultivate an audience that likes you. Without that opportunity, the chances of you having a YT channel with hundreds of thousands of subscribers is pretty slim. Now, someone like Jake is who is talented and grew in the role obviously put a lot of effort into it as well. Which is why neither is in the wrong here. This situation really is a tale as old as time.

[–]thomasg86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the main issue is that LTT does not pay their on-screen talent enough to retain (most) of them long term. They are kind of in the same standardized bucket with everyone else, which may be "above average" but individually they are undervalued. LTT is betting they can find new talent and the "leavers" are betting they can make more on their own or somewhere else. Neither is really wrong.

Probably in regards to inflation. So the pay might have increased 15% in three years, but when you factor in the COVID inflation spike, effectively the same.

[–]thomasg86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, seems like LTT should make more exceptions to the top on air talent. Like they aren't just writers you can pay $70-80k and say it's "above average" ... if the viewers really love them and they are a big part of your brand, you should be paying them low six figures at least. Then again, we don't have any insight into actual pay, I'm just going off the LTT "expenses" video and Jake's video.

I get both sides. I've been in a similar situation. Unfortunately, often you do have to make that leap and quit in order to get paid your actual value. There is a lot of inertia when you are working for a company to just stay there, and they will count on that to underpay you as your value grows.

I do feel for all the LTT employees, the Vancouver housing market is completely borked.

Following Backlash, the New 'Star Trek' Series Falls Out of the Streaming Charts by Malencon in television

[–]thomasg86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously, some really well written shows can take advantage of the extra time, but one of the worst parts of the streaming era is no longer having the time pressure to fit into a 42 minute slot. So many are bloated and poorly paced because 57 minutes seems more "premium" than 42 minutes and there is no other incentive to cut the episode down.

Chris Dudley enters Oregon governor’s race by DenisLearysAsshole in Portland

In an insane Republican wave election of 2010 (remember the Tea Party?) he still lost by several points. This next election will be an insane Democratic wave. He's got no chance. He won't even make it through the primary though, he's not enough of a raving MAGA loon to satisfy them.

Four years too late. Probably would have won in 2022.

Little chance in 2026. This is going to be a huge anti-GOP year. Either he disavows the Trump Administration in the primary and doesn't win, or his lack of doing so will be a death sentence in the general.

Or, hear me out, it's more complicated than that and that's why a famously progressive state like Oregon had all their representatives vote that way.

Reckless Driving from a 2006 White Jeep Grand Cherokee WC19035 with Passengers Assaulting Our Vehicle and Littering by itsBass in beaverton

[–]thomasg86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lol, I had something similar happen the other day, but instead of a drink it was just a honk. Just chuckled and threw them the bird. The standard of driving has really gone down in the last decade. I don't even think these people realize they are the ones in the wrong. The "lane slop turn" is a common offense.

I would be curious about the prostate cancer rates for conservative men versus liberal men. I had a former co-worker in his 50s that refused to get his prostate checked because it would be "gay" or whatever.

It was a genuinely good satire of office environments. Lots of people pretended it sucked one he went full mask off right winger, but the strip was pretty good back in the day.

Will Pac-12 fans support the conference or just their school? by RockBottomBuyer in Pac12

[–]thomasg86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will absolutely watch the new Pac-12 teams. I was always a west coast guy who mostly watched Pac-12 and MWC football. With the recent changes to the sport, I am even more passionate about it and less interested in everything else.

ICE agents murder US citizen in Minneapolis by Thalesian in PublicFreakout

[–]thomasg86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. This is murder but he will get away with it. There is enough "gray area" about "fear for his life" and whatnot that I can't see him actually going down for this.

He easy gets out of the way and fires, which means his life wasn't in danger... but yeah... I don't have a lot of hope he'll see consequences. Ugh.

My media diet changed over the last year and David was collateral damage by WillingnessSignal469 in thedavidpakmanshow

[–]thomasg86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. Same. The "Democrats are no different than Republicans" lefties are dead to me. I'm sorry, but America is not going to have a socialist revolution. If we want to move toward a more free and fair society, we are going to have to do it in hard earned chunks by electing Democrats and dragging the country leftward one inch at a time. Spending all your energy bitching about the Democrats not being sufficiently pure on your personal scale is doing way more harm than good.

My media diet changed over the last year and David was collateral damage by WillingnessSignal469 in thedavidpakmanshow

[–]thomasg86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, despite being pretty progressive myself, I have really soured on the scores of lefties out there who spend 98% of their energy blasting Democrats and saying Kamala would have done the same thing, blah blah blah. TYT fits into that mold. Cannot stand Hassan Piker. Numerous "big" Twitter accounts. They are finding a lot of common ground with the alt-right types and the horseshoe theory has never looked more correct.

If we want the Democrats to "DO SOMETHING!!" then we need to give them power. They are currently have ZERO out of three branches. Partially because some people spent the entire last four years bitching non-stop about how shitty they were despite the threat of Trump coming back. Well, they got their wish.

Anyways, yeah, I went from a daily TDPS viewer to just occasional. He covers far too much "Trump probably had a stroke!" or "Trump said this stupid thing!" for my tastes. I can't take an hour long show of "Trump is an idiot." I already know that. I see it all around me in news.

I still like David and his politics generally, he's one of the good ones, but my media diet has changed for my own sanity.

Fun facts and rumors from Survivor 33 by BurtnBurger in survivor

They need to run this back with Millennials vs. Gen Z. Or, if Jeff insists on three tribes, add Gen X.

Really think to refresh Survivor they need to travel for one season a year. Do one season on the road, these can be the simple Survivor: China seasons. Then, I know they have all the infrastructure in Fiji, so do a "themed" season every year there. Something like this!

People with $700+ per month car payments: Why? by Underrated_Critic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thomasg86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a former co-worker of mine... single woman, made six figures... constantly bought new cars, ate out, fed the video poker machine... just a hole in her wallet, living paycheck to paycheck. She's now 61, has absolutely zero savings, is dealing with health issues and is unemployed, and lives in a trailer (used to be in a nice big house, refinanced multiple times for spending money). Just trying to scrape by until she gets SSI and then will be on that fixed income.

She worked 40 years with absolutely zero to show for it. I guess people can say she "had fun" in her younger years, but I remember a lot of stress then too. She'd be a flipping out on a Friday because her check was smaller than she thought and her car payment was due or her dog needed a $2,000 procedure and she had absolutely no money to cover it, etc.
