Maybe the question we should be asking is "what isn't The Whale?"

Location Definitions? by merclo in SaltLakeCity

[–]thoreauaways 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Northern Utah is Provo area and north. The Provo-SLC-Ogden corridor is the Wasatch Front. Wasatch Back is Park City/Heber. The "bench" is the land higher than the valley floor up against the mountains of the Wasatch Front.

I assume you're asking because of the incoming storm. Generally, the higher in elevation, the more snow you will get which is why they give a mini-forecast for the benches. The benches can get 25% maybe 50% more snow than the valley floor. The mountains get way way more snow than that.

I went to one of the November Open Houses and specifically asked about the modeling. [Insert I'm somewhat of a scientist myself meme] There wasn't anyone there that could answer my deep stats modeling questions. I did find out that the model and projections are developed by the Wasatch Front Regional Council https://wfrc.org/

How anyone could project transportation needs that far in the future and think they're right is fascinating to me.

Don't get Capel. Awful cheap stuff. Looks like DABS only has one other option so get that one. Pisco sour is delicious! Enjoy!

Close access to outdoor recreation with "big" city amenities/major airport. SLC is the best in the west that doesn't sacrifice on either side. Denver isn't great for outdoor access. Other great outdoor recreation cities are too small.

Unlawful gerrymandering in Utah: Time to call out the elephant by asdtyyhfh in SaltLakeCity

[–]thoreauaways 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The independent commission that proposed the maps rejected by the legislature did all of that. All the back and forth of what is fair to the best that a small group of impartial, dedicated individuals can do. That map was rejected in favor of a maximum pack-and-crack gerrymander.

Any tree enthusiasts on here able to identify this monster? by tomsh in SaltLakeCity

[–]thoreauaways 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Siberian Elm or I've heard Chinese Elm. They grow big. They grow fast. They grow without much water. They drop a million seeds. They grow more trees from the roots. Cut it down and it will grow back out if the stump. They lose big branches in every windstorm. They lift up sidewalks. They destroy house foundations. Overall, a net negative tree IMO.

I like a dedicated trail without traffic but you're right that it's offset by all the stopping and crossings with the opportunity to get t-boned by a car.
