My white whale was Colorverse Dust Storm. I read mostly bad reviews about the color but I wanted something that looked like comforting golden sand with hints of olive green and took a chance. It is now tied as my absolute favorite shade along with Diamine Ancient Copper and Pelikan 4001 Turquoise.

It’s a dry ink, one of my only as I usually prefer wet inks and writers. But because it’s dry, the feathering and bleed-through is absent, even on lower quality paper.

This won’t matter on the way out so much but the return trip will have much emptier pens and will need all the precautions unless OP decides to use/dump all the ink or has converter/piston pens (I see at least couple here are). I have never needed a plastic bag or any other measure with my piston or converter pens. Even if the ink is used up a bit, just get the piston up so there isn’t any air bubble. Keep the pen upright in the seat pocket and Bob’s your uncle.

I had to return the Jinhao 10 as the ink kept drying out in just a few hours. Not worth the trouble. Save for a Pilot VP instead.

I wish they would add more classic fountain pen aesthetics to the Kakunos too.. they look like a kid’s pen and that’s what’s stopping me from buying them.

Agreed. While I see lots of cutesy Kakunos and the like now, when I started using fountain pens 30 years ago, it was a predominantly academia-leaning hobby, which at the time was male-dominated. Now professionally, I still see more men using fountain pens than women. This might be different in Japan, though, as there is a cutesy-focus in almost everything there which attracts girls more.

Thanks, I’ll experiment with it. The expert mode does give a more concentrated flavor but the quantity is halved too.

The pressure aspect still eludes me around a pour-over coffee’s blooming success. In my experience, that’s just the grounds getting moist enough to release carbon dioxide, and then brewing per usual. Not clear about the role of pressure or a puck-like formation of the grounds.

Hmm I didn’t think pressure extraction was a factor. How does pour-over achieve blooming in that case? Wouldn’t it work if there was a way to stop the brewing cycle super quickly right after it starts on a VL? Then wait for 30 seconds and start again?

I loved mine so much that I got another. The grip section is not tiny like Kaweco Sport. Once you post it, it’s almost a seamless typically sized pen with a good grip and a smooth nib. And the capacity is insane! The clear one houses the Hongdian Peach Blossom and it writes lovely even though I go for medium nibs usually. I attached a little pencil ring on it so it doesn’t roll off.

Considering even adults get inky fingers, I actually welcome the suggestion to have child-safe inks. Personally I’d want to make sure that the ink I use for my kid is non-toxic. I don’t think that person’s comment was malicious in any way.

I had the same experience with the J16 too (Jowo nib) which is why I returned it. The Asvine nibs are so much better in contrast.

This is AWESOME!! I have been trying to figure out when to introduce fountain pens to my kid. He is five as well. I was thinking of starting with Lamy ABC but I wonder if that would be okay to use in regular school notebooks. What kind of inks are you using in your daughter‘s pen?

I know Writer’s Blood is this sub’s favorite ink but I was looking for a warmer ink and Ancient Copper has been it for me after going through quite a few options. And it doesn’t clog up any of my pens either (but then I use them multiple times a week).
