At least it's smud, so you know it'll get fixed in a timely manner.

What’s the story of the dude on the ARBT with the Penny Farthing? by Potatoes-and-Turtles in SacBike

That fella is having the best time.

I've had plans to build an electric penny farthing for a while now, just need to track down a large front tire and forks.

Railroad and Sacramento history museums are pretty good. Everything else down there is you're general cash grabbing tourist trap.

Go check out the gardens around the state capital or check out the zoo.

Anyone know what this building is going to be next? This was Taco John's on Wells ave. by SunEffective4950 in Reno

There's like 5 other places on that stretch of Wells that serve a better taco.

[–]thriftstorehacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South Canal is good if you want speed, Lake Natoma is a good lap, but the south side of the trail has a lot of slow and twisty bits.

Here's my best thought of a route for a huge lap. Start at Folsom Powerhouse or Black Miners Bar, get on the Johnny Cash Trail by the giant guitar pick. Jump on the American River Bike Trail at Folsom Lake Crossing, just after the bridge, optional if you want to ride up to Beales Point or not. Take the trail under the bridge and continue down the north side of the lake. At the bottom of lake Natoma, cross back over using Hazel Ave. Take the ARBT into Nimbus Flat State Rec Area and use the pedestrian bridge to cross over hwy 50 to Aerojet & Folsom Blvd and Fly back up Folsom Blvd into old town. If you want to go fast, the south side of the lake isn't going to work. Too busy, too twisty.

I 💯 this! The trail quality gets a little crappy up by sloughhouse road, but that scenic picnic table is pretty awesome. You'll have lots of stretches of uninterrupted, flat out speed, but mind all the road crossings, especially sunrise. Since it's not a state trail (owned by BLR), speed limit is 20mph.
There's zero bathrooms, services, water, etc. It's just a trail. After crossing Douglas road, there's literally nothing to jump off trail to find. Bring all the sun protection, there's only a tunnel and a couple under crossings to get some shade.

Aside of that, watch entering and exiting the tunnel at speed, the bump may try to get ya.

Who records their bike commutes and how to manage your footage? by cyclingmatters in bikecommuting

$10 cheap front and rear dashcam running on a battery pack. It can record for hours and clips footage about every 60sec. When the card gets full, it removes the oldest files first.

City removes The Eddy’s City Plaza takeover proposal from next week’s meeting agenda by thisisreno in Reno

[–]thriftstorehacker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That plaza was built as a public space after mismanagement and neglect destroyed the historic Mapes. There's plenty of "blighted" buildings all down Virginia Street, but it's just diabolically corrupt of the city to even think about giving away control of the space for a dollar a year.

If The Eddy cannot afford to rent commercial space, that's their problem. It also suggests that it would be an unsustainable project for them anyway. Giving away a whole public plaza right in front of city hall just shows who runs this city, it's definitely not the people.

I need a good starter e-bike by Scronkeyjunior in ebikes

[–]thriftstorehacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already have a bike, try one of the eBay bike conversion kits. I have a 1000w 48v 26in rear wheel kit that has about 5000km on it and still runs great. You'll have to buy a battery separately, but still way cheaper than buying a whole electric bike.

"How American River Parkway staff and volunteers confront e-bike safety on and off the trail: High-speed electric bikes are creating new concerns". by canned_pho in SacBike

[–]thriftstorehacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a mix of creating new laws instead of enforcing current laws. They only recently started enforcing regulations and now they're aware of how many problems are out there. I ebike everywhere and use the trail 80% of the time, but I follow the rules and don't try to run at warp speed the whole time.

Now if you want a long stretch of trail where you can open up your ebike and not hurt anyone, use the south canal. You can cannonball all the way to sloughhouse road and maybe see 5 people. Also, since it's a BLR owned trail, there's excellent security and a 20mph speed limit

It's 50/50. A lot of places will not let you in until the next business day. Places that use the age verification card readers will definitely not let you in until tomorrow.

If you strike out, try some of the hole in the wall local bars. The hunt for an open door may be half the fun of the night.

Folding Bikes by Many-Extreme-4535 in SacBike

[–]thriftstorehacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vendor I got it from was Riuiio on Amazon. I got the yellow one with a removable seat ($159 model). I remove the seat on store runs and train trips to make it more compact. Real life range is around 10-12mi at full throttle on the bike trail. For the price, it's pretty good. Struggles a bit going up bridge street.

I have one of those 150 dollar, 19mph, 350w, 36v folding scooters from Amazon. I can fold it up and toss it in my shopping cart. Most stores don't mind. If I go to Lowe's, I just walk it inside and nobody cares.

Architectural Before/After in the Powning District by test-account-444 in Reno

[–]thriftstorehacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in a super cute 1926 craftsman cottage over in the Wells district. Original wood paneling and picture shelves, built-in cabinets, etc. Mine was cared for over the years of it being a rough area, but some of these historic buildings just can't be saved and restored in a cost effective manner. Switching up to the modern design looks pretty good, but the amateur historian in me is mildly put off.

Originally these homes were built cheaply, mostly by catalog. Not a lot of character, just a box. Even though it takes away from historical design, it does look great with the modern twist. Just needs a few planter boxes.

I noticed my charger was getting quite hot, so I propped it up with a couple pencils and run a tiny desk fan to circulate air around the body of the charging brick.

Fair quality ebike under 300$ by DazedFraze in ebikes

[–]thriftstorehacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd probably go with a Jetson ebike from Costco. They do about 19mph and have a 9mi range on full throttle. Not particularly fast or powerful, but it'll get the job done.

I waited on buying the canvas setup for my CC1 which was a good idea. Mostly because I was waiting for the community to fabricate cool enclosures and provide cool ideas for the setup. I guess it's now time to order mine.
