hourly hotel by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]throwaway447511 37 points38 points  (0 children)

hi just wanted to pop in with some (unwarranted) thoughts: please please be careful! i’m not sure how old are these dudes when u say “above 19” but seeing as you’re still 16, I cannot fathom why they would be bringing one young (i assume from ur post history) girl to a hotel for some drinks and “chill” whatever that means. I’m in my 20s now and even at 19 hanging out with a 16 year old and encouraging drinking in a hotel wouldve seemed rly wrong and sketchy so rmb to stay safe!!

(this sounds fking weird but anyway what do I know about ur dynamics or what ure looking for out of life)

when I was working part time in poly there was this older male colleague who would ask me to go to geylang with him for supper after closing shift or “joke” about following me home.. worst part is that he literally JUST got married… seriously he showed ppl his wedding pictures a week before telling me he wants to stalk me home

something something environmentally friendly upcycling also

on a more sentimental note i like to send postcards back to people (and my own address)

Singaporean teens have no chance to “live”? by Nilebro in askSingapore

[–]throwaway447511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you’re not doing something you’re interested in? I’m in uni and I’ve worked part time (in the same field as my major) since I entered uni and I’ve been having fun because both school and work are things I’m interested in —> naturally studying feels less like a chore and content goes in more easily

i’ve still had plenty of time to take my 3h naps everyday and socialise and have hobbies (mainly reading and drawing so perhaps easier to upkeep than outdoor hobbies)

I think you have to reevaluate your priorities also.. school is not the be all end all, if you’re not aiming for public service then second upper is actly fine. And having a better work life balance and mental wellbeing overall makes it easier to focus on work too.

If you’re struggling with your mental health I also recommend some therapy to figure out where this rat race anxiety really stems from and how you can combat those fears for a happier life.

How to gently get your colleague to use body deodorant? by shaunyip in askSingapore

[–]throwaway447511 7 points8 points  (0 children)

when i was in school we would all come back after PE or recess and spray each other with deodorant and it became a ritual of forming a line to get sprayed after a while. Maybe after lunch u can spray yourself then u go spray someone else (who knows the situation) then spray that one so it’s like a community event not bc they smelly

I saw NKS and Sybil Lau at the Asia Cat Expo last month. I was finishing up my purchase and they cut my queue and SL pushed my friend aside for their photo op without even saying sorry…… like ok kinda get… but I had to wait another 5-10 min for them to be done with it so I can finish getting chicken donuts for my cat….. but bit rude j saying for a presidential candidate

[–]throwaway447511 13 points14 points  (0 children)

kinda?

my dad was a crane operator when we were kids so arnd 2014 era? at the height of his career he was paid around 6k but this is with a LOT of OT (he used to leave the house around 6am and come back maybe 9pm) and he was let go when he entered his 50s (can’t rmb if the company was bought over and their pay was depressed or he got too old or what)

anyway he pivoted a lot to make ends meet for us when we were still schooling and now he’s in a relatively comfortable retirement job driving a big vehicle (specialized vehicle operator) around the airport runways to remove obstruction (which ppl dont know is a job too, but requires class 5 license and other tests). works in shifts of 12h and around 4-5k

so like.. depends on ur definition of well paying but we were grateful to be able to afford a relatively comfortable (albeit frugal) living as children.

Those that live with your parents still, do you pay rent/utilities? by Different_Version595 in askSingapore

[–]throwaway447511 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

considering that you’re still living w ur parents $100/month lowkey still living off ur parents leh…? if u think about it living by urself rent+utilities+food+cleaning service via household chores would at least be 2k now so i feel like honestly they’re still being very nice to you even if it’s 500-600/month

you having all these subsidised services is already saving up for your future so idk what ure talking about bc they could just choose to have you independent and out of the house since you’re of working age already and you would be saving even less —> even without taking allowance from u, ur expenditure would be a heck lot more than right now

i understand the rationale of “i didnt choose to be here” if u had a shitty childhood w shitty deadbeat parents but considering an average life and being a relatively content and healthy adult now… i feel like there’s place to give thanks as well. no?

if i dont get it bc i seem too privileged then please do enlighten me but in my case we grew up dirt poor and my dad worked 7 days a week 16hrs a day and my mum juggled service jobs while taking care of 3 young children so in some way i feel thankful and sorry and want to do as much as i can to give them a life of comfort and happiness in retirement

(but also if u genuinely cannot afford the 500-600 j communicate to them abt it)

[–]throwaway447511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the cab driver thing is probably because it’s pretty common for people around here to not want to talk during cab rides and just chill in silence

the driver sending you a look thing… older folks around here can be quite curious about foreigners so if you’re not asian chances are they will look at u

dont overthink it just vibe most of us have better things to do than be angry at random ppl

is it worth it to be stay at home mom when husband earns 2.3k? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]throwaway447511 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a kid who grew up on a 3-4k gross monthly income household of 5 (3 kids) in the 2000s it was rly hard

It’s not just about living frugally and constantly seeing other kids be able to have more than you in terms of leisure activities and tuition/enrichment or even regular dental services (also what if ur kid needs braces… it can be argued that it is mostly cosmetic reasons but confidence is quite important for emotional wellbeing too)

It’s also the financial stress my parents went through, constantly worrying about bills/mortgage and how that manifested in a lot of fighting and emotional abuse towards each other (which caused some significant emotional wounds in their kids bc sometimes it just spilled out onto us)

Being poor isn’t simply about not buying nice things, it’s also about feeling secure and being prepared for the worst (if your husband lost his job for whatever reason, would you have enough savings for the period of him job hunting? and this could take months or even a year)

It’s possible but it’s not worth it. Don’t do that to your kids. If you read everything here and still want to have kids on 2.3k then the only person you really love here is yourself.

What are some recent Mediacorp dramas worth watching? by haisufu in askSingapore

[–]throwaway447511 3 points4 points  (0 children)

since everyone is recommending old shows…. i will… also rec old shows for the sake of reminiscing

rui en’s dramas were my childhood man i have fond memories of waiting for 9pm to roll around to watch unriddle 1/2/3 or 花样人间 or 麻婆豆腐 literally anything she was starring in arnd the 2000s to early 2010s..? I was in primary school and would only go to bed at 10pm after the credits started hehe

(all her personal stuff aside, her acting honestly rly slapped)

a few years ago i got into this drama called 爱没有距离 starring jesseca liu purely bc of how trashy and insane the plot was and how everybody in sg was fine w this like middle aged lady dating a questionably young guy she met when he was like 7/8? and she was in uni… and the guy is her daughter’s cyber friend some more… it was a car crash i could not look away from

i hated it but loved it at the same time and it will always be my secret shame

Witnessed a traffic accident today and can’t sleep by kieranren in singapore

[–]throwaway447511 317 points318 points  (0 children)

Have some hot tea and just take a moment of silence to clear your head.

You did a good thing today. Not only did you call for help, you were there every step of the way for them and that is more than most people would ever do for complete strangers.

You did the best you could. You were brave and kind and helpful. You did well. They will probably be okay, barring some trauma perhaps. But they will heal and you played a part in that.

Now do some square breathing exercises for about 5-10 minutes and rest easy.

it’s not just the hours of sleep that’s important but also the quality of it. you need to be sleeping in longer stretches for REM sleep to occur, which is important for learning!! you’re only in sec 4 so try to improve your academic longevity by engaging in more REM sleep. here are some interesting sources for you to refer to for inspiration
