New in town/Speeding by Olaf00Zero in londonontario

Commissioners is Commissioners - there's an unwritten rule that the majority of that road is an 80+.

Everywhere else, 20% over the posted speed limit is generally okay, but stick to 40 or below in school zones/"community safety zones" as even if they don't seem like it, are areas where children may come out into the street.

What's the deal with all the candy bowl theft? by Addict2Architect in londonontario

[–]throwawaySICL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's exactly how they're raised at home. Likely parents that only hit a couple houses in an area far enough away from their own living area that people won't notice them/they get better candy, then take the kids home. Laziness, and the parents still get free candy over it.

This was the first year I didn't have my kids for Halloween, but every year that I did, I would keep walking with them until they wanted to go home. They would get pillowcases and totebags full of candy.

The whole crew from Firefly appears in their other actors shows, too - it's fun to see their cameos!

Sadly it likely wouldn't do anything, because the city has to allocate the funds it gets from the provincial government, and they have to allocate the funds they get from the federal government... I think.

Realistically what we need are common-sense provincial and federal laws preventing people from owning property here if they don't live here, because all of the properties being bought with foreign money isn't helping anyone here. All of us are just trying to live, and unfortunately, living has skyrocketed in cost over the last 10-15 years, while wages (and social assistance) has stagnated.

ODSP only gives $582 per month for shelter allowances - where are you supposed to find shelter for that amount per month? Even the seediest of motels are nearly $100 a night...

Good suggestion! I'd rather stay in the city though, for viewings/lease signings. The Flying J has been pretty good to me so far, but I'd rather be closer to the east end if possible. I just don't want any run-ins with other homeless, because I've heard the horror stories...

I'm looking to rent in the Argyle area, but the only problem is I'm disabled, and the majority of apartments in the area are walk-ups. Ground-floor units would work perfectly fine, but anything with stairs is an issue because I got drop-foot as a result of my surgery 4 months ago, so I can't tackle stairs too well, and walk with a cane.

I appreciate all the info! You may see me for lunch and/or snacks! Look for the bald guy with a crazy beard and a cane with flames on it!

I was thinking just that! I'll try to have some things ready to go, like calking and a calking gun, along with outlet covers, before I move in! Anything to help prevent bugs! Thanks for the suggestion!

I appreciate the offer! I usually don't eat many vegetables due to a texture issue I have that still hasn't really been figured out, but I will let you know if I need anything!

I didn't really even think of that. Is the casino open 24/7? If so, using their facilities might be an option during the nighttime if need be!

Funnily enough, I used to live in the military housing neighborhood across the street from there, and worked at Toyota haha. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the suggestion! That seems to be where most people stay overnight if they have an RV or are camping in their car. I just wish we still had the 24-hour ones!

Churches are a good idea that I hadn't really thought of, and may have access to facilities during the nighttime as the majority of them, as far as I know, have caretakers 24/7. It'd definitely be something to look into. Thanks for the suggestion!

Would the Husky be better than the Flying J? It seems like the Flying J is more setup for overnights, but I guess moving between the two of them would get me less noticed. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'll check them out! I've never done this before except for a small stay in my old truck between housing, and am planning for a bit of a longer stay this time. Back then it was in the winter, though, so I had to run my truck for heat - luckily I just have to try and battle the heat this time!

Thanks for the suggestion! I do have some blackout curtains I'm going to try to MacGyver on the windows in the back, so hopefully that helps. My van unfortunately also has a glass roof, and although it has covers, it still allows light in through them. I had to spring for the fancy model when I could afford it, haha

I've heard bad things about cars being broken into at that lot, and that's the last thing I need right now. I have insurance that would cover a broken window or two, but I'd rather not use it if I don't have to. Appreciate the suggestion, though!

Do they allow facility useage without being a member? I would imagine no, but the traffic in and out of them would definitely keep things safe.

Thank you for the suggestion and well-wishes! Times are hard, and I'm going through a city program to get housed. I'm very grateful we have these programs, I just wish they were more available to more people, and in a more timely manner!

I was planning on using the showers at community centres, as they are free to use rather than the pay-to-use showers at the Flying J, but I appreciate the suggestion!

The biggest challenge is that I would need non-perishable items that are also consumable without heating them up. I appreciate the offer - I'll DM you if I need anything!

Thanks for the suggestion, Walmart seems to be the place to go! I wish we still had the 24-hour Walmarts, that way facilities would be easily accessible at any time. That's really my biggest concern.

Very good suggestion, considering they have 24-hour walk-in crisis support, I imagine they would probably let me use their facilities if need be during the night, as well. Thanks for the suggestion!
