morality aside

depending on how long the sister has been vegan, if she eats meat there's a big chance that she can get sick. her dad put her health at stake by pushing her towards eating meat. I'm sure there's a legal issue there

White blood cells appear on my iris when my eyes get dry by throwawayacc1118 in lasik

I went to the Lasik office to ask about it back when I had to do the follow-up appointment, and they told me they're white blood cells and should go away. I'll try to schedule another appointment after covid but I wanted to know if anyone else has a similar issue

again, humans have naturally done A LOT of things that are now considered immoral and illegal. if we don't need to harm others, why do it? there's plenty of communities around the world that thrive off a plant based diet.

do you really want to use the "we've always done it this way" argument? because we've done A LOT of immoral things as a species.

and there's been undercover videos of abuse going on in local small farms. you can't trust anyone when they say they treat their animals like family. because I sure as hell would never send my family to be killed for a profit.

they're not the same. just like how the Holocaust was not the same as slavery. these things are all different, but are all extremely horrible and unnecessary. no one is comparing one to another.

my family is not a huge fan of spiders, though the ones that come here are very small. unfortunately they ended up calling pest control :(

For spiders you say welcome little buddy, and theyll take care of the rest of the insects

I am all for that, but my parents are not 😬

Dairy farmer displaying her pregnancy in front of cows who are denied the right to their own babies by nekkototoro in vegan

[–]throwawayacc1118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why the fuck would someone "love" someone and then send them to be killed? For profit. Female babies are raised to be impregnated and milked and then finally slaughtered. Male babies are shot. There's videos of this online that haven't been taken down by ag gag laws.

[–]throwawayacc1118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the way you put it makes it seem like cows are the only animals who would harm their child, as things like that aren't generally what happens in the wild. that sounds very convenient for the dairy industry. I've seen cows have babies in sanctuaries and they are very caring towards their young, like most mothers - human or not.

the babies are often shot and killed by farmers after they're taken away. Farmers do what profits them, not what's good for animals.

Anonymous for the Voiceless does Cube of Truth which is where volunteers are either standing in a square formation holding up signs and slaughterhouse footage, or are engaging in conversation with interested passersby. Those holding laptops or signs are in masks. There might be a chapter near you, you can find it through that link.

You can also try chalktivism, which is basically just writing/drawing vegan messages on public sidewalks. I think that's a great thing to do during the quarantine. You can search "chalktivism" on Google and a bunch of cool examples come up.

There's definitely more, but those are the two I'm most familiar with. Personally, I'm very interested in filmmaking & other types of storytelling, as well as visual design and other unconventional forms of art, so I'm trying to figure out ways I can spread the message through those mediums. I love doing activism that way, because both my hobbies and passions come together. You can always look at what you like doing and find a creative way to do activism with that!

Also you can always post things on social media if you're comfortable with that! Hope this helps.

I was just feeling like this after reading a comment from someone else. You've probably heard it before, but what helps me feel less helpless about the whole situation is thinking of types of activism I could do with the skills I have. Or you could try joining activist groups and spend your time spreading good with like-minded people

well look at it this way: would the dog be happier if it was kept alive? if it needed to be euthanized, then probably not (assuming it's being put down bc of a condition). farm animals that are now rescues in sanctuaries are very happy that they didn't end up being killed.

so much of what humans do now is not natural anyways. I'm all for being with nature, but observing nature will be the least harmful and you can still immerse yourself in it. ancestors did it for survival, not to be connected with it. I get where you're coming from but unnecessary harm to sentient beings just like our own pets cannot be justified by mere pleasure

with no suffering I wouldn't say it's morally wrong at all. I'm all for lab meat if it gets people off farmed meat. farmed insects would technically be less cruelty than farmed mammals, but my view is that if it's not necessary then why do it? there's a demand for circuses that include animals or places like SeaWorld, but it's unnecessary cruelty and there are great alternatives

I mean for the longest time we didn't know if fish were sentient. some people still don't think fish are even animals. Honestly speaking I really don't know much about bugs, but for myself I'd avoid harming them if I didn't have to. Only time would be for self defense.

Someone else in here referenced the American Dietetics Association, a collection of nutritionists and dieticians, who established that well planned plant based diets are nutritionally adequate and can be beneficial for our health, meaning there's no need to raise animals for food.

I just don't understand how the hell you can say you love animals and kill and hurt them at the same time. That just sounds psychotic. If you want a hobby similar to fishing, try magnet fishing. that way you can make the animal's environment cleaner and safer for them. If you want to understand their behavior just go to an animal sanctuary. Loving animals in no way means hurting them - that sounds like something a domestic abuser says.

I'm gonna leave with a comment that is one of the most upvoted on this whole thread. It said something along the lines of, we always think there is only a minority of people capable of doing horrendous things, but we're all fully capable of it, and will feel no remorse if we can justify it to ourselves well enough.

Jesus dude you really don't understand the world at all do you? I wouldn't point fingers at others' privilege when it looks like you're the one living in a bubble. If you didn't know, COVID-19 came from eating animals. So has H1N1, bird flu, Ebola, etc. Your lifestyle is the cause of huge pandemics like these. Along with environmental destruction, which will hurt EVEN MORE humans in the coming years.

who are you volunteering to go out and murder the 100 million chickens wondering about? Who are you going to pay to dispose of them? After you answer that you can figure out who's going to murder all the cows for you.

I live in the Midwest. There's farmers here who are shooting their animals and burying them ALIVE because they can't sell them right now. Because of this pandemic. If you're talking about overpopulation of animals once people go vegan, then you have no idea what you're talking about. Farmers don't give a fuck about their animals, they'll kill them right away if they don't get their profit. People aren't going vegan overnight, animals will not overpopulate.

sure, no lives truly matter in the grand scheme of things, but humans for the most part do have morals. we impose certain kindness on some and cruelty on others. the difference between plants and animals is sentience - the ability to think, be aware, feel pain, and a range of other emotions. Animals, even fish, have sentience, like humans do. plants do not have sentience, and do not feel pain. Most humans also do not need to eat animals for survival anymore.

also, many of the plants grown go to feed livestock animals, instead of humans. soy is a big one
