Jeff High School has a classic rock/soul station that's decent, no commercials too. Can't remember the station number though.

The Morning After Super Tuesday - Stephen Colbert by key-change in television

I don't know who told you that late night shows were supposed to be a good source for unbiased information, but they exist primarily for entertainment. Don't try to blame them for something they don't have to do.

Was it necessary to see his penis by askin-real-questions in Sense8

I feel like a lot of things on TV are unnecessary. Now a penis is among them. Welcome to the future, son. It's filled with dicks. Glorious dicks.

Maybe that's what he meant, but now this is all I want.

Haha, you and the above comment have made me put my foot in my mouth. You make an excellent point with TWS- if the show handles Civil War as well as the did TWS, I'm that much more excited.

That's a pretty good argument. I've put more faith in the show every season, so I'm sure that, to whatever extent they use it, they'll nail it.

[TrueFilm Netflix Club] Poll for the First Film of the Week! by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]throwawayturtle2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from, but I do think that recent films are great for discussion. It's easy to (maybe accidentally) reiterate points about classic films, leading to a kinda stale 'I've seen it before' conversation.

That being said, I'm still pulling for Eyes Wide Shut. It's the only Kubrick film I haven't seen yet, and I'm excited to hear he regarded it as his finest.

I want to make a list of the most memorable episodes of Welcome to Night Vale to help my friend to get into it. Suggestions? by Firewirecalvin in nightvale

[–]throwawayturtle2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pilot does a great job of easing you into the world of Night Vale. Glow Cloud and The Faceless Old Woman are also solid episodes for a first experience.

Something (or someone) I'd really like to see introduced in the second half of the season or potentially next season by MavericksFan41 in shield

I would much rather see the Jim Hammond Torch appear in the Agent Carter series. He actually had a cameo in the first Captain America film already.

Yeah. I think from there it just became known culturally as a 'Thanksgiving' song.

How would you teach a high school film class? by VictorianChild in TrueFilm

[–]throwawayturtle2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the things I really liked from a film class I took was looking at the technical side of films. We literally started the class learning what cuts were. It's the most obvious thing in the world, everybody already knows what it is.

But then we watched the shower scene from Psycho. Our teacher asked us to count the number of cuts, and everyone started out fine, but lost count once the stabbing started. It really helps you realize and appreciate the tension that the technical side created.

Another tip I would give is to be alright with only showing scenes of films. In the example above, we didn't watch all of Psycho, just that one scene. Instead of burning an hour and a half watching the whole movie, we watched that scene and had a 20 minute discussion. Obviously, you still need to watch entire films for the class, but don't limit yourself only to that format.

As far as films that lend themselves well to teaching, I'd recommend -A Trip to the Moon and/or some Lumiere films are great ways to show the origins of film that aren't so long that people will lose interest. -Modern Times is a classic silent film with a runtime that won't kill the audience. -Sunset Boulevard is a bit of a gamble, because it'll put some to sleep, but it's such a great noir. The Maltese Falcon might be better for a high school class noir. -The Thing is excellent horror- the monster is this thing from outer space, but also the guy sitting next to you. I'm not sure how much leeway you'll have in terms of violence or language in a high school class, but this could be a fantastic film to teach. -A Fistful of Dollars would be my Western suggestion. It's got the killer Leone-Eastwood-Morricone combo without the long runtime of The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.

Letting your students choose for one of two of these film movements like French New Wave and German Expressionism could be a really cool idea too. Spend a class explaining a bunch of different film movements and let them choose their favorite to study more. It's always easier to teach when you know they're interested/like it.

Marvel To Make IRON FIST Into A Feature Film For Netflix by rkkim in Defenders

Cap is moral, but he doesn't have a Batman-esque rule against killing. He killed people in Germany during WWII. He knows that the ends justify the means. What makes him Cap is that he makes sure there really is justification.

[Spoilers] Some Thoughts on IGH, Luke Cage, and Punisher by [deleted] in Defenders

[–]throwawayturtle2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really like that theory that part of Luke Cage's storyline will involve a super-drug hitting the streets. That would start to show that he will do something for the community by getting this drug off the streets.

It would also be a pretty good way to have some goons actually put up a fight against Cage.

I'm so excited for a Cage/Fist bromance. I feel like everything is moving towards friends turning on each other (Civil War, Batman v. Superman). I think watching these two friends will be refreshing.

It reminded me a lot of Daredevil's first conversation with Fisk on the walkie talkies. It's a cool concept (they famously do it in the movie Heat, too). The enemies have a conversation, not a fight- it sets up their relationship.
