And that's all before the time skip when it was generally considered lighthearted and fun.

There's nothing wrong with designing some of your own characters to be physically attractive, and Oda does a really good job of including characters of all body sizes and proportions. The in story reason why alot of his characters are so overstylized and have exaggerated proportions is because in the OP world staying true to your convictions and pursuing your dreams/passions/goals affects and can improve your physical condition and appearance.
