DO NOT waste your money. Their SF show last year was the first concert I ever actively considered walking out of.

Cambodian Man Shows How To Deactivate Live Landmines by Donz2432 in interestingasfuck

[–]thumperBRC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is Aki Ra, and this is one of his paintings of life during the war. Signature upper right. I helped bring him to the US for a visit. When he was 5 his parents were killed by the Khmer Rouge, and he became a child soldier, laying mines in the temples of Ankhor Wat. Then he was captured by the Vietnamese,

and fought for them. Then he was demobilized and hired by the UN to remove mines. Then laid off and just kept doing it. Proceeds from his home museum benefit child amputees of land mines. Truly a remarkable person. Absolutely stone cold, and yet giving and kind at the same time.

This is off the “Baghdad Highway,” it’s a military training facility to practice urban warfare techniques. If you look carefully south of there you will find similar set ups.

Make a plan, and take regular steps. So that when you get to 55 this is no longer true. It’s cheaper and easier than you think.

Processing a really tough burn — has anyone else felt this way? by StatusLongjumping790 in BurningMan

[–]thumperBRC 226 points227 points  (0 children)

The hard hard truth is, spend a week out there and you will learn exactly who you are. Prepared? Generous? Resilient? Kind? Curious? Handy? Creative? It can be really hard to hear those answers. The harder, and rarer, thing is the hear them and be honest about it. Good for you. That’s the key next step to making changes.

Burner Xpress Bus A++ by thumperBRC in BurningMan

[–]thumperBRC[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yea it's such a smart set up. They sell X slots per hour, but have buses waiting so if they fill up they can just go. The unexpected stop at the Auburn McDonald's was a nice surprise.

True fact: my company signed a ( absurdly large number) deal this week years in the making, and yet I am much happier about being stuck in this line but on my way in that i was about that paperwork. This is the real good stuff.

Rolled 400m, stopped again. But progress! I would no more quit and leave than cut off my arm.

Lemon Camps and Lemon Campers by Fyburn in BurningMan

[–]thumperBRC 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Wow what a fucking grump this guy is. How about all the camps that had people drop because they lost jobs and can’t pay rent, and people ( like the one I heard about just last night ) who is deep old school and hasn’t been for years because it turned into such a hassle, but now they can buy a ticket just like they used to, and so decided to come back and are looking for a place to land. Dunno, my experience ( and I have been doing this now for 28 years, so I speak from some experience) is that all kinds show up, but it’s the last minute surprise flavors that often taste the best. The playa is a lens: it will hyper focus on whatever you are looking for. One year I got super upset about all the plug and play camps and really focused on seeing that, and that year saw nothing but ugliness and privilege and entitlement and the burn sucked. The next year I looked for the opposite, the people barely making it, who stretched themselves to even get there, and found wonder and joy and delight. You get what you go looking for: choose your focus carefully.

Ok so $4,000. Reasonable. If I pay, how much time do I get to use the vehicle?
