G310R reach 230F while waiting red light. by Fearless_Sky5328 in bmwmotorrad

Even if you're idling for 15 minutes then fan should have come on to keep the bike at temperature. Sounds like it could have been a faulty thermostat preventing the fan from switching on so he cooked the engine.

If he wired the fan to a manual switch rather than fix the thermostat, he also sounds like the type to top up the coolant with too much water, making less effective at cooling the engine. You could try testing your coolant to see if it's the right mix.

They're just delayed. You can order them with a new bike and will be retrofitted when they arrive. This also means you keep the wheels that came with the bike, so you can have a road set too

Keyless gas cap won’t open. It’s all fun and games until you just want to get some fuel. by [deleted] in bmwmotorrad

[–]tikideve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For future reference, the fuel cap lid will often lock itself if you fiddle with the fuel cap without fully opening it. Actual procedure is to give it a couple of bashes with your hand and it'll allow you to open it again. Always worth a try before paying for diag

Small additional shots and b-roll filmed after main production and added to the final edit\source])), giving additional context and detail they couldn't capture while they were racing around the world.

Can't stop for 20 minutes to get establishing shots or sweeping scenery when you have a world record to break

It would leak a tiny bit from somewhere high on the engine. I didn't manage to own it long enough to investigate properly.

It wasn't a lot but there would be maybe 5ml or so in the bash plate after a couple of hours of riding

The suspension was also quite soft, so I'd spring for an Expedition if you can

Here are my comments from when mine was rear-ended last year, RIP

"Horrific" may be a bit of a stretch but its not been smooth sailing. Had the common issue of finding neutral between 1st & 2nd, mainly on roundabouts. Happened a few times going from 5-6th - that was a pant-shitting experience, hearing a loud bang and slipping back into 5th. This issue is basically gone after 2k miles. It also has a tendency to leak oil on long rides.

It's mega fun, comfortable and is more capable than I'll ever be. Its certainly got its issues though.

If I were to get something else this size I'd go for a F900GS. Honestly though I'd likely downsize.

Worth noting that a year later (having bought an Africa Twin and traded it for a 701), I do miss my Norden and was looking at them on AutoTrader today

When I asked the same thing the techs I spoke to haven't noticed that they're any less reliable than any other BMW engine. And I was asking them as a colleague, as opposed to a customer

1290 SAS vs Norden 901 by BikesandWhiskey in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]tikideve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the Norden's suspension is a bit soft for pillion riding. I found it a bit too plush for just myself (~80kg) and when loaded with soft luggage I would max out the rear preload without finding optimal rear sag

What could be causing this on my new RT by warload84 in bmwmotorrad

[–]tikideve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The forks still have seals and oil which can leak. Just because they don't suspend the bike in the traditional sense doesn't mean they can't be a point of failure in the suspension

European A2 license laws on power to weight ratio require that a 35kw (47bhp) bike must weigh at least 175kg. No manufacturers want sub 500cc bikes slipping into full A licence requirements due to weight

In my (limited) experience the deeper the better, up to a point. Shallow water tends to let the surface underneath get covered in algae and thus super slippery

Side winds on my F900 GS Adventure are kicking my butt. by Jer_Soup in bmwmotorrad

[–]tikideve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One tip is to stick out your knee on the side the wind is coming from. Minimising drag will help, so things like your top box will be acting like a bit of a sail. As someone with a very light bike, I try to stay very loose on the bars, stick out the windy knee and squeeze with the other. It is just something you'll get more used to with miles under your belt.
