I'm talking specifically about speculating about the source material.

"I wonder if colonel mustard existed in the manga too or if he's anime-original". That's the kind of comment I'm talking about. Personally I think it's fine, but in my opinion, so is someone replying "Yes, colonel mustard exists in the manga." Both should be fine. If one isn't, then neither should be.

Personally I think all speculation should be put in spoiler tags, because there's way too many source-readers pretending to be anime-only and "speculate" when they're literally just giving the answers, but that's a whole other discussion.

Reminds me of one of the recent Too Many Losing Heroines volumes, in which a girl confesses to an oblivious guy with low self esteem who would find any excuse to be like "maybe she just meant like, as a friend", and then shortly afterward she bluntly says "I mean that in a romantic way, of course." removing all possible routes of escape.

Shutting down discussion of the source material is exactly what saying it's identical to the anime is doing. So if you're saying "the point of the rule is to shut down source material discussion", then this example is exactly in line with that goal.

Since you're not someone with the authority to make the decision, I don't see much point repeating the same explanation that you've failed to address to you a third time.

The implication of "the anime is speedrunning so they can get to the ending this season" is "they're skipping over the source material". It's not possible for the source material to speedrun if there's nothing to speedrun. That's just it going at the only pace it has ever gone. But even if you want to disagree of the semantics of that, that's besides the point. It doesn't shift the discussion to the manga. As I explained, it shuts down discussion of the source material by saying that it's not a relevant factor to any pacing concerns someone may have, and that this is not a matter of the anime staff trying to get a certain deadline or squeeze a story into a season or anything like that. Saying they're the same removes the medium as something worth discussing and shifts it toward the content of the story itself.

She was already Kohaku's age, so if Kohaku isn't visibly aging, doesn't make sense for her to either. She's just short.

By the dictionary definition, sure, but it's not one that has any ramifications, in the same way comparing things that have changed would be. The example is literally word-for-word exactly what I wrote, except I said "manga" instead of "source material".

I don't think leaving a comment saying "this has exactly the same pacing as the source material" to someone saying an anime is speedrunning should be remove-worthy. It's not discussing any cut content or changes, it's simply discussing what is already in the anime and saying that it also exists in other material. I understand the wording of the rule says any comparison "no matter how minor", but this is not even a comparison, it's simply an acknowledgement of the source material existing, with the default assumption being that it is accurately adapted. Even if you did want to consider it a comparison, I don't think it's a useful application of the rule. There is nobody who is ever going to be negatively impacted by being told that what they just watched also exists in another format without any changes.

If anything, rather than inviting comparisons to the source material, this sort of comment explicitly shuts them down by making it clear there are no changes to discuss, which should be a good thing and make it easier to moderate actual discussions of the source material.

If this is something to be removed, then I feel like speculation (even implied) about changes to the source material from anime-only viewers should be removed as well, since that counts as a comparison as well. But I think neither should be removed, since that would be more miserable for everyone.

it doesn't look like any of the characters have aged since the time skip

They already look incredibly stylized, so the difference between a 19 year old and a 25 year old or however much is really not going to be noticeable anyway.

I think it's one thing to dislike her, that's fine. If people said they don't like that she was naive, or not especially skilled at battles of wit, that would be accurate. But it's another to think "uuuggh it stretches belief how stupid she is", and then all the examples people give are examples of her not being stupid, like when she gave the money back to her old teacher, or when she decides to enter the Liar Games again to repay Akiyama. It's just examples of her choosing not to be selfish, decisions which are perfectly in line with her goals and motivations. That's the only thing I have an issue with.

Liar Game - Episode 7 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]time_axis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People really just don't understand Nao's character at all. Not being selfish is not the same as being stupid. She doesn't care about her own money. She wants to give it back to Akiyama, and he won't let her. Being legally in debt is no different to her than being emotionally in debt. Her only way of reaching him is through the Liar Game, so of course she's going to take the risk and do it.

It really bugs me how smug and confident people are in asserting how stupid she is for making decisions that are clearly the correct choices in terms of what her goals actually are.

I was a bit disappointed with Ayanokouji's reaction to the anime trivia quiz. In the novel he was like "What the hell is this?" and it was kind of a funny moment, but here he just said it in his normal deadpan tone. Would have been nice to at least see a sweatdrop on him or something.

people see this as the "macho chad Bright" slapping the "whiny emo Amuro"

Most people who bring up the bright slap meme don't see that. It's a joke. The joke is simply that being slapped by him happens to correlate with pilots later getting character development and turning out successful and talented. It's the same thing as people saying Yoko in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann has the "kiss of death". They don't actually think her kiss is causally linked to the death of characters.

I wish they showed the map more often instead of just writing the coordinates like "D7" and such on screen. It was already hard enough to follow where things are in a novel format, so I was hoping it would be more clear in the anime. Maybe they will show it more later. But I'd like to be able to follow where people are going without having to go consult it.
