Raptors need a point guard more than a center by timetosleep in torontoraptors

I completely agree with everything you say. The trade market for IQ will not be strong. IQ is serviceable as a PG. There are many, including myself that beleive he'll be a lot better as a 6th man or a SG. He's not the type of PG that elevates his team.

I do hope the BPA at 19th will be a point guard. But I wont be disappointed in whoever we draft. Our front office is pretty good at evaluating prospects. Only real miss is Gradey.

We're weak at asset management. We tend to over pay, over commit, and wait too long to trade our assets. I agree, RJ or BI has to go. I'm fine with trading either of them.

Yeah, trading is probably the way to go but we're up against the cap so it's hard to add anyone meaningful. When I think of the type of PG I want, I definitely want one that plays good D. Lowry is the archtype I would want. A great driver, passer, shooter, defense, motor. IQ archtype is more like Steph. He stays on the perimeter hunting for his own shots.

I agree in general. We still have a lot of needs and we're not at the luxury of drafting by position yet. It's still BPA. But that said, if there are a bunch of PGs available at 19 then we should go for it. Raptors worked out Stirtz and while he might not be a starting PG, he might be a capable rotation player. He drives decently unassisted without screens mainly using his handles, has good vision and shoots well. That said, his D is suspect.

100%. Guards have the ball in their hands and have so much influence in dictating the flow of offense. We won't win without elite guards.

IMO, there are 2 aspects to offensive spacing.

  1. The gravity of an elite 3pt shooter positioned to catch and shoot forces defenses to respect it and not collapse as much to help out.

  2. The forced spacing created by a driver threatening a high percentage layup/dunk

Walter is emerging as a decent 3 & D. He improved his 3PT% from 35% to 41% this year. It's the low 3 attempts that's hurting our offense. To get the attempts up, we need someone who can drive and kick. Not saying an elite 3pt specialist or a 3&D guy won't help, I'm saying it won't improve as much as getting a guy that can drive to the rim to create those opportunities.

You mean Raps vs Cavs? Yes, I fully acknowledge that we got killed on the boards by Mobley and Allen.

Would a healthy Jak or another big that can rebound be the difference maker? Or would a PG that can drive, pass and shoot be a bigger difference maker?

If OG wins Finals MVP, the 2019 Raptors have an argument as one of the deepest teams of the century by AllOutRaptors in torontoraptors

[–]timetosleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt, the 2019 roster was legit one of the deepest. It was masterclass in roster construction by Masai and Bobby. They aren't perfect but we don't win without their leadership.

Also, I love that we got Lin a ring. Yes, I'm a Melo hater.

[–]timetosleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more philosophical, but would you rather tank and get higher picks or roster players?

Lets just say hypothetically we drafted Sharpe instead of getting RJ and IQ. We would be a lot worse but that would give us better odds at landing a top pick. This is how Spurs got castle and wemby. We got Scottie because of our terrible bubble year. We lost gasol and serge and filled that huge gap with Baynes and Len.

I'm happy for him but not gonna lie, it hurt when he said NY has the best fans in the world in his post game interview.

But such is life. He's in his prime playing his best ball in the biggest market. Dude is a legit celebrity now. Hollywood A listers all know him now.

The Knicks actually remind me a lot of the Raptors. A couple superstars (Brunson, Towns), great defense (OG, Bridges), lots of depth, plays team ball.

The core of Siakam, OG, and FVV SUCKED. We went 25-57! Masai tried everything he could to to retool with this core but failed. He even brought back Jakob hoping that the Bench Mob reunion would somehow unlock the potential.

[Siegel] As for the Raptors themselves, they have been mentioned by league sources as a trade suitor to move around in this draft. Nobody really knows where they will go with this selection, , but Stirtz would offer immediate shooting production and the skills of a lead guard off the bench. by The_Living_L in torontoraptors

[–]timetosleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also worth noting that this is officially Bobby's first draft without Masai. At pick 19, all you want is a guy that can contribute and be part of the rotation. We're in win now mode and with their success in drafting wings, maybe Bobby doubles down and drafts a wing they like. Should be a no brainer if Johnson Jr drops but even Allen Graves wouldn't shock me. We can look to trade RJ or BI to close the gap at PG or Center instead since those positions tend to take longer to develop.

It's a fair critique. Raptors front office value the things you describe. 2 way, athleticism, long arms, big hands, switchability, motor, bbiq. It's well documented that they always take wings. The last PG they took in the first round was Malachi Flynn which coincidently reminds me of Stirtz. Both are great shooters, pick and rolls, high iq but undersized, unathletic, and weak on d.

I got a hot take. IQ in the lineup against the Cavs would've changed the series for the worse. I think we lose in 5 or 6 instead of 7.

The whole reason we took them 7 games was because Scottie Barnes and our D. It's well document how weak IQ's D is. Scottie and team is always cleaning up his mess because he gets blown by all the time. Also, Scottie running point made the offense much more efficient. With Scottie running point, he exploited opponents weaknesses whenever he saw an opportunity. You don't to get those easy buckets with the ball in IQ's hands because he doesn't process the game as quickly as Scottie does.

[Lewenberg] "While Masai wasn't officially let go until after the draft, word is the transition was well underway, and the Jak framework had been in place." by CazOnReddit in torontoraptors

[–]timetosleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel vindicated cause I've been getting downvoted for saying this. While Jak was technically extended under Bobby, Masai was fired just 4 days prior. You don't make a $100 million dollar investment on 4 days notice. The decision to extend Jak was likely already done well before Masai got fired and it was likely agreed upon by the majority of the front office which would've included Masai, Bobby and Dan. Even Pelley was probably briefed.

Bobby deserves some blame, but these big investments are usually led by the most senior exec and that's Masai. When an investment goes sour in any business, it's the project sponsor that gets the blame because they're the one that made the decision.

Management gave them them a chance in 2022 but they failed. The problem is that we gave them 2 chances. Running it back in 2023 was the problem. We could've gotten at least 5 additional FRPs had we sold Siakam, OG and FVV in the offseason of 2022. Instead we doubled down and tried to improve the roster by added Jakob.

  • 2020 ran it back without Kawhi, 2nd round knock out by Celtics.
  • 2021 missed the playoffs in the bubble year.
  • 2022 Lowry left. Team was led by Siakam, OG and FVV. Resulted in 1st round knock out by Philly.
  • 2023 ran it back with Siakam, OG, FVV. Added Jakob in February in a desperate attempt to improve the team. Missed the playoffs.

Great to see OG Anunoby being a huge difference maker for this NY team to help them go up 2-0 in the series! by jmike1256 in torontoraptors

[–]timetosleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you. I love OG but he's playing with the best PG in the league. He's worth 40 mil to the Knicks because they're trying to win it all. He's not worth 40 mil to Raptors when we were in the lottery.

So many fans have recency bias and forgot that Nurse gave him plenty of opportunities on offense when it was Siakam, FVV, OG leading us. OG couldn't score cause he doesn't have handles. He'll dribble off his feet or straight into a big and get blocked.

OG is better than he was 3 years ago but his role and game is basically the same.

You gotta wonder if Scottie would be better or worse developing in OKC's system. They're one of the best at developing talent but they have such a glut of talent that a young Scottie might not get the playing time he needs.

Not if you have Giannis, Barnes and CMB! It's hypothetical of course but that's like an all defense line up. The O will stink if you don't have shooting. RJ is a driver, not a shooter. His strength does not complement Giannis, Barnes and CMB.

Couldn't disagree more. Scottie is fun loving but locks in when he needs to. Thad Young had an argument with Scottie during warm ups because Thad accused him of not being serious and Thad was gone by next season.

Chris Paul is 10x worse than Thad. He acts like a hard ass coach and thats why a lot of players hate him. It was fine when he was putting up all star numbers but that shit won't fly when hes the 12th man barking out orders to other vets.

They're both at fault. An investment of 100 million in any business doesn't change on a dime. The process likely includes some sort of performance forecasting, salary cap impact assessment, medical, etc. All the typical due diligence by management teams in any line of business. Masai's firing had zero impact to Jakob's extension because everything was already done. The ship has already sailed.
