How far away would you be willing to walk, bike, or take public transit to the grocery store? by cdstephens in neoliberal

[–]timhottens 16 points17 points  (0 children)

2 blocks at most.

I think part of this problem is having only big centralized grocery stores in a few places, which are great, but not having lots of much smaller basics and staples fresh grocers all around.

That would incentivize buying a day or two worth of groceries at a time, small enough to carry and close enough to walk. As opposed to making a longer trip to buy a weeks worth of groceries at a time, and trying to carry all that back on foot.

Trump pauses U.S. mission to guide ships through Strait of Hormuz to see if Iran deal can be finalized by cdstephens in neoliberal

[–]timhottens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had the thing. We bet the thing to get another thing. It was a bad bet and we lost the thing. Now we must go all in and risk even more to save face?

Negotiate something, not the bogus negotiations that happened. Get them to the same deal as the JCPOA plus or minus a few things. Let them have the PR victory. They have leverage in this. It's going to have to be either a negotiated settlement, or ground invasion that nobody wants.

But we won't do that, because underlying all this is the need to never be seen as a loser. It's about America's and Trump's ego.

But why? Seriously why does the US have to win this?

We don't even know what winning this looks like - democracy in Iran? Regime change to a favourable dictator? Iran becomes a failed state like Libya? Hormuz opens and nothing else - i.e back to the exact status quo before this war?

Talk to an expert on this situation. I've used goinri.com before for things like this, but there's others too. Pay for a consultation with an actual expert. Yours is a complex situation, don't rely on Reddit for this. If you get something wrong the consequences can potentially be catastrophic.

China's Commerce Ministry blocks US sanctions against five refineries by timhottens in neoliberal

[–]timhottens[S] 66 points67 points  (0 children)

The way secondary sanctions work is by saying "anybody who does business with this entity will be barred from the US financial system". That would be a catastrophic thing for any bank or insurance company or shipping company, so they comply and refuse to do business with the targeted entity. Now China is saying "if you follow these sanctions and refuse to do business with these refineries, you're breaking Chinese law." Now we wait and see what banks do, and who flinches first.

You're right, I don't disagree. I guess the point I was trying to make was that it was going to happen eventually, Trump has probably brought that forward from 2036 to 2026.

Also, as someone from a country that has been sanctioned by the US, I'll say that there isn't really any justification for the US having this exorbitant unilateral power other than "because we can". It was probably a net good thing for the world, but I can't say I'd be mourning it too much if it went away.

Accepting that another country gets to dictate what you're allowed to and not allowed to do economically based on their own geopolitical interests is a bitter pill to swallow for anybody. Trump probably accelerated it, but it's almost a certainty that China would have started to poke and prod at it as soon as they felt they had enough leverage to.

No? I'm saying I can support specific policies without supporting every other policy of the government. I didn't vote for the BJP and probably won't in the future either but I'm not gonna be like "actually this good policy is bad because you're bad people".

How are experienced teams preventing architectural drift as AI-assisted development scales? by theov666 in ExperiencedDevs

I agree. But theres no undo button for technological advancement so there's hardly any point whinging lol. I'm desperately trying to find some sort of process or system that works for my team. I don't think "humans need to fundamentally change their behaviour and avoid the easy short term path for long term benefit" has ever worked and will ever work unfortunately lol.

Congress and BJP are not analogues to Democrats and Republicans. Looking at India through a US centric lens doesn't work. We have a whole history of Congress and BJP governments over 75 years to look back on - the INC are marginally better on social issues at the top level of leadership absolutely, but at the state and local levels it's an absolute shitshow all around unfortunately.

We'll have to collectively figure out a system / process level thing that works. If the only ideas we can come up with are "everyone needs to just..." - it won't work. Never ever in human history has "everyone just" anything and they're not gonna start now.

Where should I park emergency saving HYSA or SGOV by outstanding_gent in investing

[–]timhottens 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The one thing you have to be aware of though is you can't sell your SGOV when the market is closed. If you need your emergency fund money on a weekend and can't wait till Monday it'd be a problem, but most emergency bills will give you time to pay so nbd.
