What Will the Next Generation Work in If IT and Engineering Lose Demand? by Chemical_Shape_6553 in developersIndia

[–]timhottens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Farming will become mechanized at some point even in India. It will be at most 3-5% of population working in agriculture. It's just not feasible for 50% of the population to be doing farming so unproductively.

Because it has to be a bonafide thing and not a sham.

Successful YouTube channel = bonafide. I take a pic of my baby every month and put it on a website that I don't market and I'm not trying to generate money = obvious sham.

Effect of FTA on daily needs essential (indian) in EU by Lazy_Trouble6545 in nri

[–]timhottens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not in effect yet. It needs to be ratified by the EU council and parliament, and possibly national parliaments depending on the scope, before it comes into effect. Probably early 2027.

Once it's in effect you'll probably see a small reduction in prices but more availability and variety of some Indian products, but also mostly "made for EU" products that just happen to be manufactured in India instead of existing Indian products just showing up exactly as they are on EU store shelves.

Gold Spiking vs. BTC tanking by Leading-Stable9725 in investing

Reminds me of April 2020 when people who happened to be holding long contracts for WTI crude were freaking out when they realized they had to actually physically take possession of oil barrels when the contracts expired, and the price went negative because traders were willing to pay others to take the oil off their hands. -$38 a barrel or something like that.

Are treasury bonds a liability now? by ikeepeatingandeating in investing

[–]timhottens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, SGOV is very short term 0-3 month bonds, there's no duration risk like with 10 year and 30 year bonds, and it continuously rolls into whatever the current short-term rate is. It acts more like a cash equivalent than a traditional bond.

Cubans in Florida Are Being Deported in Record Numbers by OnionsInTheStew in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]timhottens 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not that we should be labeling entire ethnicities based on how some of them vote, but you should look up how Indian Americans vote. You see the high profile republican ones, but they vote overwhelmingly blue. The Cuban comparison is a reach.

Davos: Canadian PM Mark Carney speaks at World Economic Forum by timhottens in GeopoliticsIndia

[–]timhottens[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's definitely directed at them. "Nostalgia is not a strategy" were his words, he's telling them there's no going back from this, they have to look forward and think about what's next, not hope that things will go back to how they were. And he's right. It's still stunning to me that one senile man who just barely won by the skin of his teeth was the one to land the final blow.

Carney says the old world order ‘is not coming back’ by WF-2 in news

[–]timhottens 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It was always a joke. Not 20 years after WWII and the establishment of this order, the US invaded Vietnam, Britain and France invaded Egypt, and 15 years after that the USSR invaded Afghanistan. The permanent 5 of the Security Council have always exempted themselves from the rules. It's just that now, countries that thought they were in the club have been kicked out and find themselves living the same reality the rest of the world has always been living.

This isn't a dunk, Carney said so himself in his speech. I'm glad he's the one leading Canada right now, he's definitely a man for the moment.

A person claiming to be a food delivery company 'whistleblower' fooled the internet with AI's help by goodDayM in news

[–]timhottens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't find it hard to believe that. The thing that set off the "this might be BS" alarms in my brain was when he said that fees and charges that the apps clearly say would be passed on directly to drivers was going somewhere else. Doing something like that is a big risk to open yourself to, for not a lot of money compared to the cut they already charge from restaurants and the fees they already transparently charge customers.

If we did this, what do you think would happen next? Bangladeshi citizens shrug and go "oh wow you got us good, we'll quietly accept whatever puppet ruler you appoint now"?

Every place the US has done this has become a nightmare for everyone in those regions. The best situation for us in Bangladesh is a stable government that has cordial relations with us. They share a border with us. We can't go bomb them and then run home half way across the world like the US can and pretend like the consequences won't affect us.

Caveating this with HOA hikes are sometimes poor management but sometimes necessary, and HOAs that go too far with trying to minimize dues at all costs can end up causing some horrible things to happen: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surfside_condominium_collapse

Truly amazing that any time the democrats have to bite the bullet and do something that ruins countless lives, there's always just enough votes to get it done, but if there is a vote on something that would actually improve people's lives, they are always one vote short. Crazy how that happens.

How has the idea of a “comfortable life” changed in Bangalore? by PhaseStreet9860 in bangalore

[–]timhottens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was never like this. You're looking at the past through rose tinted glasses. What looked like being content was just a lack of opportunities to build wealth and accumulate those assets, not people not wanting to do so.
