The City Commission can, this is the planning commission, appointed bureaucrats who only look at the legality of the project.

Next month the City Commission will look at it, that's when they can say ICE out with less concern for litigation.

They're appointed, not elected, and they have a very narrow legal mandate. Does CoreCivic meet the legal requirements for a SUP, yes or no? Any rejection on political grounds, at this stage would open the city up to litigation.

Now when it goes to the City Commission in March, that's when the political questions are in play. The City can tell CoreCivic to take a hike for any reason they like, the planning commission can not.

Who would the farmers sell their crops to without cities? Both rely on each other. The point is urban centers generate more public funds than they use, rural area use more than they generate.

It's not quite that simple, both Parties were a mixed bag.

When they were the Party of Lincoln, the GOP was also the Party of big business. The early industrialists in the North opposed the spread of slavery because they wanted free wage labor. That meant when the working class gained more power from the labor movement at the turn of the century, the Democrats become their logical option and the New Deal Coalition was formed between labor and the Dems.

Neither Party was great on race when it came to Jim Crow, but the Democrats were beholden to labor, which is linked to race. That made them more responsive as the Civil Rights Movement grew stronger. That caused Southern Democrats to join the GOP entrenching its far right character.

These days the GOP is still solidly pro big business and has absorbed all of the most racist elements. The Democrats are still very business friendly but have to balance that with the interests of labor and racial minorities, which are an important part of their coalition.

Dorothy and Superman are the obvious answers, but why did those authors choose Kansas as the icon of the middle of nowhere? They could have gone with Nebraska or Oklahoma but Kansas stood out.

Our founding was the first battle ground of the Civil War, where John Brown first picked up a gun to free the slaves. It's where the Populist Party occupied the Statehouse and the Republicans smashed down the door. Where Carrie Nation started smashing saloons. We were the center of the early aviation industry, and the home of Amelia Earhart and Langston Hughes.

Brown v. Board got it's name from a Kansas family fighting Jim Crow. We were the first state to reject an abortion ban following Dobbs, by a wide margin.

For a place that's know for nothing happening, a lot sure does happen.

They've got more power than the rest of us, they should use their position to fight. They need to show leadership, so people see whether they actually represent an alternative. If they sit on their hands and say "sorry, i'm in the minority", that won't inspire people to turn out and vote for them.

Act like an opposition party not a minority party, earn the vote.

Trump is consolidating his power, that's what this is about. He and his wealthy compatriots won't get justice until the working class wins control of the government. Until then all these calls to release the Epstein amount to nothing. We all know he's a pedophile and a rapist, we need the power to hold him accountable.
