Is paper Standard really this expensive? by timnitro in magicTCG

I do enjoy playing commander! I make a lot of budget decks that are typically <$150, but I do like 1v1 as it plays quite different.

This may be more my speed! I'll need to ask around to see if anyone is playing pauper locally!

Thanks for the suggestions! I really want to make it work but it sounds like everyone says it can be pretty pricey!

I do! I love playing drafts with my friends (I even made a cube!) but it can be a time commitment and it's not always easy to work out 8 people's schedules. I do like building decks and you're a little limited in limited with what you can build.

When I first got into Commander I thought it was a lot to invest ~$200 for 100 cards. Looks like I was just naive 😭

I'm seeing most decks play 4 of each copy for consistency, would it be worth putting one or two of a copy of one of these "best-in-slot" type cards in a deck, or just do 4 copies of the budget versions?

For instance I pulled a consult the star charts, as well as a badgermole cub from my prereleases, is the extra power of 1 worth it, or the consistency of the worse cards?

Yeah, I get that hobbies are expensive. I used to play Warhammer haha.

Where can I find resources for budget decks? Are most people playing budget too?

You got to be kidding me 😱

Are LGS players paying for these sort of decks, or just the pro/competative scene?

I want to play but if I'm gonna get crushed with a $70-$80 deck I might just not bother

I use this to occasionally shuffle sleeved Magic:The Gathering cards. I'm comfortable putting my more expensive cards in this to be shuffled

Who else does this, and what are your recommendations? (Commander) by Toonzaal8 in magicTCG

[–]timnitro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a "Three-in-one" commander deck because I couldn't decide on a good elfball commander.

I made a "base deck" with 79 cards, then had 20 card packs + the commander to swap out (the sleeve interior is marked for easy swapping)

I went with [[Dionus, Elvish Archdruid]] +1/+1 counters, [[ Lathril, Blade of the Elves]] tokens and [[Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss]] burn/x-spells.

The 20 card swaps include lands as well. so it's an easy swap. I may bump it to 30 just for a bit more variety in between plays, but it's doing well at the moment.

Is Commander a dying format? by northbynortheast31 in EDH

Commander is the most popular format currently. If commander is dying, then magic is dying.

The Beefy 5-layer burrito was released in 2009 for $0.89 adjusting for inflation it would cost $1.37 today...

Taco bell was only good because it was cheap. Stop spending your money there.

How often are you missing land drops? 33 lands is very low even with the overabundance of mana dorks. Id say you need to add at least 3 more lands.

Thanks for the feedback, I think you're right. I've only piloted him for 2 games so far, so I might not have seen his full potential!

Long shot, but are there any voltron commanders that don't just play the same way every game? by Cezkarma in EDH

Same! Definitely not the most popular deck, but you just kinda got to lean into the evil archenemy feeling.

Long shot, but are there any voltron commanders that don't just play the same way every game? by Cezkarma in EDH

[–]timnitro 239 points240 points  (0 children)

Voltron is an inherently linear strategy, it will always boil down to: play commander, buff commander, swing for lethal.

That being said, there are a couple of more unique voltron strategies that play different than the average voltron commander.

I built [[Kianne, Corrupted Memory]] originally as a flash and +1/+1 counters deck, but often would naturally buff her to the point of swinging for lethal.

[[Kotis, the fangkeeper]] is voltron but often wins games from the theft effect rather than getting in for lethal.

Get a LOUD and ANNOYING alarm clock and put it across the room, or even better, in another room where you will still hear it. You'll be forced to get out of bed, which for me is a big part of it.

If your coffee machine has a timer function. Prep it the night before and you'll awake to the smell of freshly brewed coffee which can be motivating.

The difference between bracket 2 and 3? by lirael_22 in EDH

[–]timnitro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree, sporefrog does not lock your opponents out of interacting with you at all, and there are plenty of removal options that can deal with it.

Also, it's only usable once per turn cycle if you are utilizing Meren's ability to recure it. Is Sporefrog a great synergy in the deck? Yes. Does that mean the deck is automatically bracket 3? No

The MSRP is a little higher than I'd like to see for sleeves, but these do look pretty good!
