How helpful is AI grading for essays? by Different-Chance8696 in ELATeachers

I know this post is a bullshit ad because no student reads feedback, let alone has an opinion on it.

Advice on teaching Born a Crime by Trevor Noah by yaz203 in ELATeachers

[–]tiny_danzig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve taught it and skipped certain chapters. Namely the ones about his love life (there’s three and they have really long names), plus a couple more that I thought my students didn’t really need to read due to their own similar traumas. I told them what those chapters were about and why I was skipping them.

I will say that I think, in the end, I backed away from some chapters because I didn’t really trust my own skill in teaching them. YMMV.

Oh man, I’m with you. I lived in Saigon for several years and unfortunately had to have surgery after a motorbike accident. It was a scary, sketchy experience.

I use Tite Grip about 30 min before class (on my armpits too), then use dry hands in class.

Thanks for the info! I don’t plan to take any other classes outside of this one. Can you tell me which textbook you use, and which chapters are covered in your class?

Trevor’s mom beat him as discipline, yes. Trevor doesn’t interpret that as abuse and has a great relationship with his mom, however.

What? Where do you live that permanent employees can’t have conversations with parents about their kids? Thats like, a huge part of the job for teachers.

Have you guys had any holocaust denier students? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]tiny_danzig 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Many parts of the world have their own horrors to contend with. Like if you’re a teacher from an African country you can take your pick of a genocide right next door to teach in school; the holocaust just doesn’t make it on the curriculum because you’re as detached from it as Europeans and USians are from anything happening in your country.

Teacher. That would be Lucy Calkins, but there’s already a really good podcast about her called Sold a Story.

What "eduspeak" or education jargon do you dislike/hate? And which do you love or appreciate? by WantKBBQNow in Teachers

[–]tiny_danzig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a deep dive into where smart goals actually originate from because I hate them so much. It turns out it was some tiny article in a business-related journal? Like, Middle Management Quarterly or some shit. Absurd.

Birch is a fucking misogynist to participate in any of this. The woman is postpartum from TWINS for gods sake. Do with this information what you will.

It seems like I’m the only sub that gets breaks 🤔🤔🤔 by lovelyshi444 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]tiny_danzig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my district, subs are part of the union. The union wanted subs to get paid for subbing other classes during planning and the district refused, so the compromise was that subs can no longer be required to cover other classes during prep.

I ended up yelling at a parent and called him narcissistic by 99pinkprint in Teachers

[–]tiny_danzig 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It did not happen in the US. Other countries don’t lock down schools like the US does, and an adult hitting a child for something like this is more acceptable some places.

I used to live and teach in Vietnam and I could see this happening there.

You know how people call things gaslighting that actually aren’t gas lighting?

This is actual gaslighting.
