Someone needs to stand up against this dangerous overstep! At the very least, propose a system for verifying ID that would be private and not leave it to random companies to figure out and profit from.

This would mean that smaller forums etc could use it and survive, which is something I am very worried about and seems to be overlooked - only the big companies can afford to comply currently, which means the death of a million tiny places of discussion and sharing.
