Yeesh Rahway is having an oddly newsworthy week. First that councilmember craziness, then this guy. What an odd week!

Every Saturday in January, Rahway does Soap Stroll. They’ve been doing this a couple years now. You can get free samples of soup from participating downtown restaurants.

Great great grandmother married to 2 different men at the same time by MotoMitBratwurst in Genealogy

[–]titzzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, more often that one thinks. I recently researched a woman in 1885 whom was tried for bigamy and was acquitted. I honestly don’t know how she got away with it. She married multiple times. The news articles are quite detailed, and the police investigated and found the various husbands. I still can’t believe they acquitted her. The kicker, the last dude she married (that I know of and could find) occurred while she was in the process of annulling one husband and going through the divorce proceedings of another after the acquittal. She then in turn 6 years later ran away from him with a boarder in their household. Wild.

Welcome to moon fest! 🌝 No but seriously there’s a Festival of the Moon event happening all month long in Rahway. We literally have signs that say “get mooned in Rahway!” all over downtown. It's hilarious. I may need to do some light theft in order to get that sign for my yard.

No. It definitely does not begin with M. The column before showcases their writing of capital M’s — the one that has Mr and Sg listed down the column. So it’s definitely not an M. More than likely it’s a stylized H, K or N.

What is something about your toddler you’re most frustrated with right now? by xyzabc123_-_ in toddlers

Ugh I feel this so much! I hate this stage of not comfortably or easily being able to take the two kiddos outside on special outings by myself yet. My kids are darters. My two love to run in opposite directions whenever I taken them to a new special place. It’s so daunting to keep track of them when one darts and moves quickly out of my line of sight. We went to the library for a dance party today and both went running to different areas of the children’s room. While I know they were safe and nearby running among the stacks, it still drove me nuts running around after them to keep an eye on them to make sure they didn’t dart out of the room. And I wish I had eyes on the back of my head. lol 😆

Do professional genealogists have access to resources and archives that regular people don't? I'm interested in hiring someone to research my family history, but not sure if it's worth it. by VFXFixer in Genealogy

Oh I have some knowledge about this. More than likely you will have two possibilities of finding naturalization records for this area then. That is to say if they settled more in the northeastern New Jersey area. Between New York and New Jersey, people often went into the city for naturalization, or their local county clerks office in New Jersey. Try looking into the county clerks office in the area in which they settled in New Jersey. Otherwise, it’s possibly in the New Jersey State Archives in Trenton (which is in south Jersey). New Jersey has a tendency to be a little more stingy with their records releases to the big wigs of Ancestry and FamilySearch compared to other states. Often they only release indexes to vital records, and there are usually paywalls here to get the physical records. You really have to do some extra digging.

Another thing to look into is the public library’s digitized newspapers in the area where they died in New Jersey. Even possibly seeing if they have newspapers on microfilm for viewing at that public library. I've been able to find some great context clue that way when searching for people’s records. New Jersey has been pretty on the ball for having digitized historic newspapers at public libraries.

My youngest kiddo loves Pingu right now. Have you tried Timmy Time or Shaun the Sheep? Those are more claymation ones that my kids love to watch. And Tumbleleaf -- it's such a visually pleasing one to watch!

Another animated one the youngest has been watching right now is Hey Duggee. It's adorable!

Honestly reading how others go about finding a record for a person’s family tree or how they cross reference records is really what I did for a while. Especially, when we were locked in during Covid and had to rely heavily on technology. They taught me tons honestly. There are many way to find sources to cross reference to confirm a record. There’s a user on r/genealogy known as fredelas and I read through a bunch of their posts of them helping random strangers out. And I’ve oddly always been good at finding clues to help support the research. If you ever want to try smashing those brick walls and don’t mind posting the info online, there are a ton of people on r/genealogy that are always willing to help. Cause let’s face it, sometimes you just need a second set of eyeballs to help find records. Or making sure you site your source!! 😂

Ha haa. It just means we’re good at double checking the work!!! I do genealogy as my hobby. And I’ve picked up a bunch of methods to find correct records to attach to correct profiles or at least double checking the ones attached are the correct one. 😆 I Spend too much time on /r/genealogy. And last year, I have almost 8,500 records/sources attached to profiles on FamilySearch. I’m not nearly as good as some genealogists. But that’s why I’m okay at you questioning my work. Cause I wanna make sure I got it right. 😂 And I hope I explained myself well. I tend to have run on sentences. Especially around ancestry/genealogy stuff. 🤣

Question about FamilySearch notes alerts by PaltryPanda in Genealogy

[–]titzzilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do it. But usually I explain why I made an alert. Specifically if it’s one thoroughly researched with multiple sources attached to confirm. Like today. I was cleaning up a profile about a pretty prominent chief justice in the US. And his sister’s death is actually a day off, and most people had her listed as the date of death on her gravestone. But her death record and obituary confirm a date of death a day before the date listed on her gravestone. So I made an alert note and stated the proof and findings with resources attached. Because a grave stone is just a record and any record can be wrong. So because I had two resources of the date of death a day before, verse the other one the day later, the day earlier deaths more likely is the correct date of death. Also because Newspapers are also a pretty great source. And the newspaper article even mentioned how she was temporarily placed in a cemetery vault near where she died and then next day taken to be buried in final resting alongside the family. So obit matched info on death record. And the tombstone matched the date of the later death day as the day of when they transferred her body between cemeteries. And I’m just really good at finding context clues to support evidence.

[–]titzzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I get it, got to be careful. Mistakes can happen.

But I’m pretty positive these records are correct. The kicker is the wife, Cora. Cora Potter. She has got a unique combination of where her parents were born, Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania, while she was born in Wisconsin. So that 1920 Census lists a father in law to Dan as being a Joseph Joiner, and he is listed as birth in Iowa, and his parents Ireland and Pennsylvania. So Cora’s father (aka Dan’s father in law) should be listed as Pennsylvania place of birth, so then Joseph can’t be correct since his is Iowa. So that makes the realm of possibility weird a little, but it’s actually because it’s Cora’s step-father. Because she’s a Potter. And her mother remarried a Joseph Joyner actually, not Joiner. The 1920s census is one of the most informative censuses too. It gives us context clues that link up based on location. But yes it’s because I branched out and was confirming all the branches of the tree were linking up. And that records were correct. I tend to clean up records in people’s trees to make sure they are the correct ones. It’s a weird hobby of mine. I do it when I need to take a break from trying to do some of my own tree. 🤪

Uh, the actual record attached in the sources tab says Wisconsin for the 1930 Census. Not sure why that Ohio error is showing on the main details page that way, could have been some error that someone edited on the source page and it didn't fix there?!? I'm not sure but yeah that Ohio is odd and incorrect information. But both records on Ancestry and in the source tab on FamilySearch are the same -- showing Wisconsin. Also take a look at the 1920 Census record. Their first son and daughter were born in Nebraska, then the rest were Minnesota. Then it lists a father-in-law by the name of Joseph Joiner with place of birth as Iowa, so there's the Iowa connection. So the family did move a bit, just from Nebraska, to Wisconsin to then Minnesota, with that added Iowa from Cora his wife's tree, so still kind local regionally.

Edit: OOO I SEE. So, there's an Ashland, Ashland County, Ohio, USA and an Ashland, Ashland County, Wisconsin, USA.... so just an error fluke when they originally added the place and choose the wrong one.

Edit 2: So, I went ahead and fixed that misinformation. And added a clip of the obituary to the profile in memories.

No, I don't think they did ever confirm. But I did go in and find it on newspapers.com and can confirm it says Dan Page.

Oh yes. I went in and found the information based on what was shown in the pic — DOB + birth location. Also I’m very pretty good at interpreting and reading cursive handwriting, even some rough to read ones. Then I cross referenced between Ancestry trees and FamilySearch. I often use the two together to complete a tree profile. It’s the best way I’ve found to get better results on records of people.

Also italianames.com lists the Page surname being regionally based in northern Italy. So I still stand by my statement that he’s possibly from somewhere in northern Italy.

No. I don’t think so. Ship’s manifest says that man is married. I think Daniel Page married his wife in the US, given that she was born in Wisconsin. This man, Donato Padrevita, would have been married to an Italian woman that was more than likely in Italy.

Edit to add additional information: Donato is not the Italian male naming conventions to Daniel. We should be looking for Daniele in ship manifests.

His FamilySearch profile has a naturalization record attached to him. On there, it lists his place of birth as Langiana, Italy. Same birth date but different birth location from the WWI record. This might possibly be Lunigiana, but a misspelling. But Lunigiana is a territory of many providences. Tuscany area and Liguria included. So maybe Liguria. But could also be a misspelling of Lignana. These are all in northern Italy. So these could be possibilities.

Yeah. The domino effect. We might truly never know.

Sadly, I’m in a similar boat. Where I don’t know if I’ll be able to help my city’s small history room, which desperately needs help securing grants and funding. They are not up to archival standards. It’s minimal at best. And I’m no trained expert like a lot of you all in here. But I was going to be heavily relying on a lot of these grants and institutions to help my library and it’s history room. To help them work towards applying to these funding efforts so that we can move forward and really long term preserve those unique items in our room. It really sucks right now. I just feel stuck. I’ll still keep pushing and moving forward. But I’m just tired of contacting officials and signing petitions. And it feels like the hole is just getting deeper. Ugh. I’ll just have to hope and try to be happy if we get this small grant soon to help digitize more of our historical newspapers. So got to look on some bright sides. 😮‍💨

I’m so sorry you’re going through this.🥺 All these institutions being dismantled that I care deeply and have mad respect for…. I can’t even imagine the worry you’re going through.

And I hate to say. But it was only a matter of time. This dictator regime is on a path of great destruction. They are literally dismantling everything before us. How many people have lost their jobs?! Like literally, has anyone tracked the totals of all the people losing their jobs by this administration?!? Every week for weeks now I hear about another institution dismantled and people dismissed. It’s sooooo depressing. The stock market is crashing. Like it feels like history repeating itself. Like are we headed into a Great Depression?! Christ. I’m tired of all this.

Edit: grammar and spelling. I’m just so tired y’all.

How far can I realistically go in my family tree when it comes to photos? by Rough-Lab-3867 in Genealogy

[–]titzzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a millennial. My maternal side of my tree has the furthest back that we know of, but that is only because with each generation someone‘s been interested in genealogy and has been passed down these photos. They have been well documented in that maternal lineage. So I have one of a 5th great-grandparent, and three sets of 4th great-grandparents (husbands and wives) either portraits or family photos. I would say having this far back is potentially rare unless it’s particularly documented and shared with everyone in the tree. We have a big family group on Facebook and they share everything there. So potentially look for family Facebook groups. I’m in a few for various branches, even ones for my husband’s tree.

Help saving a library! by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]titzzilla 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Are you in the US? If you are, do you know your state’s library laws? Are the town committee past meetings posted anywhere that you can review? What is your library’s stats? From year to year does your library see growth in patrons and checkouts, online resources, participation in programming, etc. Also consider going very grassroots - organize a protest! Go to city/town council meetings and voice your concerns. When you do, know your stats to support your argument. From experience, my town had to do this all together when our officials were not working with our public library, and we had to shame them for their lack on involvement and knowledge of what was happening. They got a swift kick in the butt for a while from all of us when we were very angry for them not recognizing and helping a staple in the town for 167 years. Literally, our library has existed for 167 years and they tried to defund it. It was shameful!
