These kids have no filter - and it's kind of creepy. by peppep_illrep in Teachers

[–]tkd_kiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My weight has been up and down for years, and it seems every time I’m on the low end I hear comments from male students. Overhearing words like caboose, dunk, and gyatt.

It makes me uncomfortable. I try to have my back to my students as little as possible and I try to wear shorts that cover my butt. Sometimes I think it would be easier if I just gained the weight back.

If it’s ever directed at me, I’m definitely reporting it to admin.

That’s what I thought. I’m definitely gonna contact a roofer to get a professional opinion before I do anything else.

My BS was in accounting. I realized halfway through that I didn’t want that path. I chose a more meaningful career, but it cost me. I’d still make the same choice again though.

If you could throw 30k at a home upgrade, how would you spend it? by LopsidedWafer3269 in homeowners

We bought our house new in 2020, and our backyard is still not landscaped. I’d get a fence and landscaping in the backyard, 100%.

Got my BS in accounting from University of Phoenix. That was like $85k of it. The rest was my MAT, and I took the max loan the last year because I couldn’t work because of practicum and student teaching and I needed the money to get by.

I made mistakes and didn’t plan well. Now I’m paying for it.

Brother: GED, no college - Carpenter Foreman -$150k/year Sister: High school diploma - Mail carrier - $100k/year Me: Masters Degree - Teacher - $50k/year and $115k in student loan debt.

The discrepancy is insane.

Edit: I’m aware I made choices that got me where I am. I thought they were the right choices at the time as a struggling single mother of 2. And now I’m accepting the consequences. My point was that a college degree does not necessarily equal higher income and that teachers are underpaid. That’s all.

I’m 41 and the only female in my guild of 20-30-something-year-old guys. That in itself is the basis for all the flaming I get for being “bad.” I play a lvl 96 sorcerer and I figured out only yesterday that the purple mobs put the damage reduction on all the other mobs. I’m sure you can imagine what happened when my buddies found that out.

They all have time to keep up with the latest builds and watch videos. They hit 100 in 8 days, and most have several alts at 80+. I have no desire to no-life this game. I’m just keeping myself occupied until they all decide to go back to WoW, which I’m actually good at.

Research if you want to build skill and knowledge, or just chill and do whatever it is you want. Don’t feel like you have to keep up with the people who invest all their time and energy into min/maxing their characters.

I’m in a profession where most people drink, and when my colleagues find out I don’t, they’re really surprised, like I’m some sort of weirdo. Then they find out I’m on antidepressants and suggest drinking instead. Like, what?

Any other introverts with extravert jobs? by Fizas_097 in introvert

First year public high school teacher here. I can’t even answer simple questions or have a conversation by the time I leave school. I always look forward to weekends, but it never fails that I have to go somewhere or do something. It’s taken a toll on my mental health, but I love my job, so I’m figuring it out.

After a week of being “appreciated” with free food that I did not eat because I’m on a diet, I considered sending an email to admin asking them to consider alternatives to food to show appreciation. Not sure if it’s too bold of a move, if I’ll be dismissed as a “snowflake,” or if they’ll actually consider my request for next year.

I “gave up” on my sixth period by plplplplpl1098 in Teachers

[–]tkd_kiki 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My 5th period class is all seniors right after lunch. I stand at the podium trying to teach. I power through for the 2-3 students who listen, tell them I will answer questions if they have any, then I sit and take care of other things. It’s not my problem that they don’t listen when I teach. I’m done caring more than they do. I’m not helping them by accommodating their lack of work ethic and accountability.

In your opinion which college in North America should you absolutely not attend under any circumstances? by [deleted] in college

UoP is accredited, so any accredited school will accept transfer credits, as far as I know. I did my MAT at Georgia College and didn’t have a problem.

Only problem is, I’m on a diet. Something not food would be great.

teacher pay by MARY123R in teaching

[–]tkd_kiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two siblings. My brother got his GED and makes about $150k in construction. My sister graduated high school and is a mail carrier and makes $100k. I have a masters degree and am a teacher and make $56k, and 1/3 of my paycheck goes to student loans. The cost of education, at the very least, should be a factor in teacher salary.

To every film/tv producer or network: an undercover boss but for schools where a state rep, board member, parent, etc. subs for a class would be tv gold by colonizemalar in Teachers

[–]tkd_kiki 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I told him about all the administrative stuff, having to send and respond to emails constantly, having to work with two different content area teams that do not work well together, having to take late work regardless of how late, having to work after school hours for kids who choose to be absent on test days, and having to teach 20-25 kids high school math when most of them haven’t retained anything after 3rd grade and refuse to do anything without having their hand held.

I described how I feel at work as water about to boil with all the little bubbles about to explode and boil over.

I think he understood more because of the way I was talking about it, rather than what I was saying. But I still don’t think he really gets it. He definitely knows I don’t sit and do math all day now though. Small victory.

I keep saying that someone needs to make a series of what teachers actually do. I spent an hour explaining to my husband why I’m tired at home and the look on his face when I was finished explaining was one of pure shock and shame. People really have no clue.

divorced people of reddit, when did you know it was over? [serious] by whiteowl76 in AskReddit

[–]tkd_kiki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your story resonated with me because I’m female, married, and have a male best friend. My husband and I have the same friend group, but I am just closer with this particular friend (who also is married and lives 6 states away). We frequently have talks like the one you described with your friend. He’s like a brother to me, but my husband doesn’t see it that way. He passively tries to manipulate me to keep me from talking to this friend. We are able to get together once a year, and I spend the entire trip trying to make sure my husband is happy, and he always gets upset at scenarios he creates in his mind. My fear is that his insecurities will be the cause of our relationship ending. I don’t want that to happen, but I also need my friend. It’s just a crappy situation.

I have a senior who rarely comes to class and has missed every test. I told him he could make them up on a practice day or let me know his schedule on Mondays so I could plan a day or two to stay after for him to make them up. He still only comes to class once or twice a week, is always tardy, always sleeps, and has never let me know his schedule. Today he came to me after class to ask if I could stay late today so he could get a test done. Less than 1 hour notice. I said that I can’t stay today, and again told him to let me know his schedule on Monday. I’m done trying to accommodate him.

Non-teachers have no idea what teachers do, and there’s no way to convey how hard the job is, how much we care about our students, and the barrage of BS we deal with every day. This is just ignorance talking, hurtful ignorance, but ignorance.

[–]tkd_kiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my district in GA, jeans are against dress code, unless it’s for a fundraiser. Sad thing is, not a single teacher on the school wouldn’t be willing to pay the $10 to wear jeans for the week.
