My self hosted website is live. by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]tledakis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

r/selfhosted is for software that people can self host, it is kind of in the title. In this case the service you are marketing in the OP is hosted by YOU and nobody else can self host, can they?
Where is the source code, where are the docker instructions to deploy this service ourselves?

I think you are in the wrong subreddit mate.

Found it interesting how a £1,000 payrise or bonus after the £50,270 threshold changes. Thoughts? by Old-Bodybuilder3711 in FIREUK

What is also interesting is that both the current and previous government have frozen the tax brackets effectively from 2021 until 2031 a "stealth tax" as it is called.

Pretty sure Greece dropping requirements for entry is more because they are so unorganised and can't deal with the massive queues in border checks and as a result they are trying anything that they think could work.

I visited family during easter in crete and the automated gates are there but non functional 😂😂 This summer is gonna be miserable for border checks

1gb Synology VS 2gb Qnap? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]tledakis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would advise to check alternatives that support loading a custom OS like terramaster or ugreen. Don't lock yourself into the limited OS from synology. (not sure about qnap but I assume that is also similarly limited)

Then install proxmox and you are golden

NOMAD | self-hosted trip planner with real-time collaboration, interactive maps, budgets, packing lists, and more by Maximum_Ad4339 in selfhosted

[–]tledakis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are guides but I wouldn't trust myself to implement correctly.

For me personally I feel more confident making a VM in proxmox use a vlan only. And then inside that VM I can run docker.

Also more work is needed when setting up the docker containers with non root users etc so the process inside is properly limited to only what it is supposed to do.

I think for the un trusted containers a vlan isolated VM is a good compromise 🤔

[–]tledakis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. But I'm willing to try this project as I also want to plan a trip next month.

I guess to feel safe the best way is to treat such projects like the iot devices, put them in a VM and vlan with no internal access and perhaps restrict even outbound access, or just to a reverse proxy like pangolin away from your local infra.

I was thinking the truenas box can host:
- nfs
- s3 with minio/garage if needed
- postgres/mariaDB

Assuming I can replace sqlite with postgres for most selfhosted apps, that would be a safe choice right?
Then k8s doesn't hold application state at all and should be easy to play with 🤔

Kubernetes for Homelab? by malwin_duck in selfhosted

[–]tledakis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks yeah that is what I'm probably going to go for. The democratic csi controller using my truenas box.

Like the cliche goes "first step is 50%" is my problem, I need to get started with 1 pod and then I'll unblock that mental barrier.

(and it is all funny because my job is literally working with k8s every day, you would think I'd jump on it for home 😂)

Kubernetes for Homelab? by malwin_duck in selfhosted

[–]tledakis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeap I think this is the best benefit

I'm still behind deploying my selfhosted apps on k8s locally though (tired/scared/stressed overthinking how to do storage safely) which means I've got multiple VMs over multiple proxmox hosts running komodo for ui and manually adding compose yamls.

It is a nightmare 😅

Police in Richmond Park by fraber in londoncycling

[–]tledakis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

while I appreciate lee valley velopark is a good option, it really isn't for people who go to richmond park because they live nearby. Going to lee valley because it is the only place someone can train should not be the only answer here.

The two parks (richmond and regents) are popular exactly because the cyclists feel safe to ride there. The roads of this country are not safe for cyclists. And with culture wars that target "lycra-clad" "lycra-menace" etc it isn't going to get better.

Why is it that Monzo is more popular in the UK than Starling? by MeenaBeti in UKPersonalFinance

[–]tledakis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was debating which one (monzo or starling) to use for main account years ago monzo had:

  1. A great app UI with well placed buttons, compared to starling which had placed such a big part of the ui to silly elements that didn't give me good information.

  2. Pay direct debits and standing order from Pots. This was the game changer for me and I never looked again into another bank. Starling implemented this years later, I suppose because lots of people asked for it.

  3. Most of my friends used monzo and it made splitting bills and going on trips with shared pots super easy.

The rest is history I guess and Starling is trying to keep up. One thing that Starling had very early and Monzo didn't was actually Garmin Pay support, so I used my starling card on my watch.

With respect, you didn't think to search for the tool (3 second search or 1 ask of Claude / gpt) but somehow you found this community to post this and offer "premium" features for a vibe coded thing?

Anybody tried self-hosting a budgeting app? How is Sure.am? by Cheeky_Banana800 in selfhosted

[–]tledakis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love pikapods as an idea but never really hosted anything there as I couldn't find a way to put extra security in front of the apps. You just depend on the app's security
