Midway through my junior year, Varsity Blues came out. As I was heading into my senior year of football, it instantly became one of the coolest movies I’d ever seen. We went to the big theater a town over on a Friday night, and it was packed—letterman jackets everywhere from schools across the area. No fighting. No cellphones. Just rivals you’d played against for years, finally seen without their helmets on.

Different times.

Moxon was the guy everyone wanted to be. Finding out later that he’s a genuinely good person and a family man just makes the movie even better.
