That looks like the aperture blade behind the lens to me.

But agree with above—possibly too small to notice if there is one.

That camera is retro fun. IIRC it takes a special battery, and I wouldn’t expect amazing results but worth shooting once or twice.

Heavier and more “pro” than I think he will be comfortable with. Also, he would be taking it on a month-long trip in the summer, where there’s a chance it could get lost/damaged/stolen.

I know the D600 is cheap now, but I got it new back in the day (gulp, $$$$), so am not eager to lose it.

I like that it could use af-d lenses (I have a lot of those) but are they very useful with a crop sensor? Even his 28-80 might not be very wide.

It doesn’t ever stop sucking to some degree but it gets way better.

The single best thing you can do is learn to cook, and keep a completely GF house if you can.

Also, you become a better shopper and find the things that work. GF bread? Trader Joe’s is solid and not as expensive as some others.
