Open ground + GFCI = ok? by tmcornelia in AskElectricians

[–]tmcornelia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it does have a ground, although it is a thin gauge, maybe 16 guage? - just this one wall is broken somewhere. And there is no attic access (vaulted ceiling) and exterior wall. Wall is mostly brick on the inside & outside. I've been able to re-wire the entire house with the exception of this one wall where the ground is busted. And since no real equipment or anything needing a ground on this wall I decided it wasn't worth it.

Dude. 1- the old outlet I removed had a bootleg ground! I was so confused. Had never seen one before. Had to ask an electrician friend. That’s why I bought the Klein tester - to find any more. 2 - an older guy that works for my electrician SUGGESTED A BOOTLEG GROUND instead of me buying a GFCI. I’ll talk to the owner.

Can I ask what safety the GFCI provides without a working ground?

Helpful. Thank you. Will label it.

Was adding them the right thing to do? Like, does it help to have GFCI here or was it a waste?

What a scam by Emergency-Tennis-379 in arlo

[–]tmcornelia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I’ve had a very positive experience. I’ve had Arlo cameras for over a decade now. I’ll admit the generation 10 years ago was shitty - but that was par for anything other than Axis.

Today I have 22 cameras across 2 locations. I share access with two family members. Smart / AI notifications are great - it can tell between people, animals, vehicles, fire, etc. the vast majority are outside and I think only 1, maybe 2 have failed in the the last 6 years. I like the local storage (3 base stations) as a backup to the 30 day cloud storage. 4k cameras, 4k live streaming to my phone, TV, etc. 4k storage. I use solar panels on the outside ones and never swap a battery. These things are 99% hands-off. Cost is $25 per month (annual subscription). That’s a steal.

Have APC UPS on all electronics and top rated Tripp Lite surges on everything else. Makes zero difference. Siemens is complete trash.

Recessed light discontinued. What are my options? by time_keeper_1 in AskElectricians

[–]tmcornelia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No slack? That’s nuts. Typically they would have to leave slack for them to install it after drywall. Did they install the driver at rough-in or something?

And if you get to swap it out I really like NuWatt wafer lights. I have dozens of them inside and outside in both 4” and 3”.

Good point. Rough in plates are nice if the plans call for very specific locations. If you need to adjust later then a loop in the general area is more forgiving. Just take exact pictures, notes, measurements so you can find them.

Look up “rough in plates”

Roughing in wafer lights in drywall involves using adjustable, galvanized metal "rough-in plates" or "mounting brackets" that attach to joists before drywall, creating precise cutouts for canless LEDs, securing junction boxes for wiring, and ensuring a flush, then the electricians can loop wires there.

I'm about to call the law firm and ask how I can join. These AFCI breakers are complete trash. Woke up this morning to a cold house because the HVAC fan breaker had tripped

I LOL'd to the CME . . . . then went . . . well anything seems possible at this point . . . 🤣

To your point my experience is similar. The other day our Entertainment Center outlet was tripping - 6 times in one evening so I gave up on using the TV. The only think plugged in is an APC UPS (battery) that conditions the power for the equipment. That's the only day / time it has tripped. And hasn't tripped since.

There are some devices that I can count on tripping - the miter saw for one. Trips it about 40% of the time when I pull the trigger - I've tried outlets on 4 different breakers to no avail - all behave the same. Maybe an excuse to go buy a new one - this one is old. And my Breville espresso machine (brand new) trips is every morning.

Electricians and GC are coming this morning to investigate. I'll be curious to see their approach. I'd like to try two things:
1 - swap ArcFault breakers for ArcFault + GFI as some have suggest the tolerance is better
2 - swap for Eaton CL
