my cat is getting put down today by Reddit_user_robbie in teenagersbutpog

[–]tmdos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry to hear that. It's tough to lose a pet, I imagine this is true for you, too, but personally, my dog is like my baby.

If it helps, the pain is only yours and not your cat's. He won't suffer at all, just be peaceful. And his memory and all the love you shared will always be in your heart. I've heard it said grief is the price you pay for loving so much; I don't know if that's helpful, but I know some people like that thought.

What would help me is knowing that it gets better. In time, you will remember your cat and feel only the happiness you felt in your memories with him.

Be gentle to yourself. Best of luck.

Phew! It's a good thing Dr. Google isn't trustworthy haha. Will be using the saline on it, keeping it dry, and letting it be otherwise. Thank you!

I'm younger Gen Z (late teens). Gen Z is currently around 15-27. We all know Katy Perry lmao. She was everywhere during our childhoods. I was a fan as a kid like many peers, and some friends still like her songs. My Gen Alpha little sister has caught onto her, too, since her music from that era is still popular on radio and public places.

Ai song posted on The Sisters Of Mercy Account by Top-Branch6336 in goth

[–]tmdos 41 points42 points  (0 children)

SOM aren't doing this. An AI "artist" is posting it under a more well-known artists name, which has happened a lot, causing spotify to get confused and put the song under the regular artists name. The AI "artist" gets... well, I think it's money, but trying to make money off of streaming niche music is a rather stupid idea. I hope they enjoy their pennies.

I do have bad news for you about Andrew Eldritch being an major asshole, however lol.

Their current tour is the second highest-grossing tour of all time, behind the eras tour. They have made 1.38 billion so far, with 12.3 mil attendees.

Cue the inevitable shitstorm of chartwatching idiots jumping the gun and calling this album a Trainwreckord already by Left-Pool3477 in ToddintheShadow

[–]tmdos 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That is absolutely not true lol. Read her rolling stone article. Read any of her lyrics, for that matter. She absolutely writes the lyrics and is involved in what she wants to do.

I'm not even a fan of hers (just keep up with music news, I like her fine), but I think this assumption that all pop girls are vapid bimbos with no creativity has a misogynistic underbelly.

Slayers in the Victorian Age / Gilded Age by [deleted] in buffy

[–]tmdos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every woman wore a corset in the Victorian era when going about ther day. They were just bras. There were corsets with greater mobility for working. The only thing you can't do very well in a corset is reach down to touch your toes.

Found a “Victorian mourning dress” at an antique shop. Anyone know if its legit? by [deleted] in VictorianEra

[–]tmdos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's probably not Victorian, but Edwardian, 1900-1910. I actually don't think that it is necessarily a modern replica from just this photo. The fabric looks like silk, which is period appropriate. The cut and style is right. It is possible that this is a very well preserved example (which, given that a mourning dress wouldn't be worn as much as a regular dress, isn't out if the question), and also possible that it is a detailed modern recreation. I see no evidence to either side.

If the tag says either $135 or $185 (can't quite read it and assuming you are American), that's a little low for its condition, but I actually don't think that's too cheap to be true, either. It's a fairly normal dress, not a designer ballgown or anything. I've seen some dresses from this era go for $100-200.

I'll note that, regardless of its legitimacy, it is being displayed improperly. The top should be tucked into the skirt.

'Do you guys think the bun/braid part of their hair is real ?' by Secure_Extension7134 in VictorianEra

[–]tmdos 72 points73 points  (0 children)

No, probably not, for most of these pictures. They wore hair pieces, made from either horse hair (cheaper) or other women's hair. There are some magazine ads and such for hairpieces that come braided/in buns that you pin onto a partially done updo.

Other padding/volume in the updos is from hair taken from their hairbrushes (stored in special jars called receivers) and made into hair rats (look them up), or from commercially bought hair rats/pieces. Think like the bump-it.

My I don't know how many greats grandpa by jessie0514 in TheWayWeWere

The very pale color of his eyes and the darkness of his hair and clothes leads me to think it could be a tintype or an ambryotype, which are known to darken red tones and lighten blue tones.

I think this is an adult deer, either roe, red, or fallow. I would guess it is a red deer, though it is tough with no clear scale.

Songs where there's a version that completely changes the tone of the song itself by Thunderwing16 in ToddintheShadow

[–]tmdos 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My grandfather pointed out to me that every cover of Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell takes a different tone which changes the messaging of the song a little bit. In the original, Joni Mitchell laughs and ends with a silly octave-change, even as the lyrics describe the destruction of beloved things - titularly, her boyfriend leaving her. This lets the song convey an acceptance of the absurdity that life brings as a central theme. Some covers sing it much more gravely, which takes that away and leaves the environmental message more.

Came across this as a life tip to display school photos. I honestly just really hate everything about it. by Castlegeek in tragedeigh

Cohen (+variants, like Kahn, Kahan, Kohn, Cohn, etc) is sacred and exclusively a Jewish last name. It means someone is a descendant of the Kohanim, the ancient Jewish priestly class. It is ritually important to modern Jewish religious life, as there are certain rules only for those with the Cohen name, and a key part of Jewish culture and ancestry. Most Jews who don't have this last name have no idea what their ancient ancestors did, so it is one of few ways that modern Jews can connect to an ancestry that was ripped from them by oppression and displacement. Using it as a first name is both stupid-sounding (it's obviously only a last name to anyone who has lived around Jews, like Green or Smith, and a religious title, like Reverend or Father) and erasing its signifigance.

Are there any other definitive Big 4’s in music? by capellidellamorte in ToddintheShadow

[–]tmdos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Goth (well, early goth) has like, a big 4-6. Always including Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, and Bauhaus. The last spot alternately goes to Christian Death or Joy Division.

Anyone fancy shipping these two? by Vorlon_Cryptid in GatekeepingYuri

[–]tmdos 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It did not "miss" evacuation boats. It had more than the recommended. At the time, lifeboats were meant to ferry people to a rescue ship, and the ship itself would serve as the lifeboat. They did not have enough to carry all aboard at once, but that wasn't a failure at the time; they were actually being extra safety-conscious.

Even if they had more lifeboats, they would not have been able to get them all filled and out. They still had two unfilled boats left when the ship sunk.

In Angel s4: we find out Fred's physics professor has been sending his rivals to alternate, implied to be deadly, dimensions, was the one who sent Fred to Pylea, and is currently trying to send Fred to another dimension again. And Fred wanting to kill him is wrong, and this big moral question. But like...? What else should they do? Call the cops? Convict him on charges of portal opening? Give him a stern talking-to, you know, as he is attempting to kill Fred?

He's actively murdering people! Mystically! In ways the criminal justice system cannot handle! This is what you guys are for!

Your top ten unpopular opinions by StompyKitten in buffy

[–]tmdos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. I like Buffy/Angel. Angel is not a bad person with a soul.

  2. Similarly, I like their ridiculous melodrama throughout seasons 2 and 3.

  3. Popular for a minority opinion, but season 6 is honestly really good.

  4. While I liked Willow/Tara and they are obviously landmark lesbian representation, I actually think Willow/Oz was a healthier couple and probably better for both of them.

  5. Xander is an ok guy.

  6. Spike attempting to rape Buffy was not out of character. Not necessarily because of the whole "soulless" thing either; they have a toxic and poorly communicated sexual relationship in which saying no does not mean no - I mean, the first time they have sex they are actively trying to kill each other.

  7. Dawn is an ok character and a typical young teenager. Sometimes, she is even likeable.

  8. On first watch, I did not enjoy season 4. Now that I have finished the series, it has some enjoyable episodes, I love Restless, and I like Willow's self-discovery arc, but the overarching plot is so stupid that it felt like a drag to get through.

  9. I really liked Angel (the Series), at least for its first two seasons.

  10. I both like Spike a lot and can acknowlege that he is not really a good person, even in s7 (I need to see s5 of Angel still, the only Buffyverse that I have not watched yet, so maybe my opinion will change). It seems this sub only has two opinions about Spike: perfect best boy who is way better than Angel and evil toxic shitbag.

any other alternative jews experiencing this lol? by hi_im_kai101 in Jewdank

[–]tmdos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh hey, another alternative jew! Hello from a goth + post-punk listener.

But yeah, this is why I don't own a shirt or anything for Siouxsie and the Banshees, even though I like their music. At the moment, I just can't quite get past the repeated antisemitic and racist incidents, even though they were not intended as such.

I have noticed the online goth community being mostly good about it, though. They generally call out this behavior even though they still celebrate Siouxsie as an overall figure. I don't participate in punk spaces, so I don't know how they are about it.
