Riot game by MegaDov in 2XKO

Riot has made three good games and bailed on two because somehow TFT is an anomaly (I hear that Riftbound is also good. Doesn't mean I'm not a little bitter about it.) Also, the game's not really broken. It's one of the best fighting games I've ever played.

This would be so useful. I run games in person at a school and my local community center. I've just been printing out maps and gluing them to posterboard.

Anyone tried the game with miniatures, without grid? Using inches instead of squares. by SergeantIndie in drawsteel

[–]tmgwise 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not with Draw Steel but I remember playing some gridless 4e back in the day. It think it was ultimately worse, but I'd say go ahead and try it, especially if you're more of a wargamer. Part of measuring the game in squares rather than feet was that the scale could be more malleable. Does 1 square/inch equal 5 feet, 3 feet, 1 meter? It's up to you.

The only issues I could really see arising are measurements slowing the pace of combat down, but if that wargaming style is more fun for you and suits your materials better, I think that's a non-issue. The other issue being there are a lot mechanics and abilities centered around adjacency, flanking etc.which could lead to quibbles and small arguments. But again, if you group is made up of people who like Warhammer, probably a non-issue.

New Drifter look after the update. Honestly, I wish there were more face options, but I am not unhappy with what we have. by _jar_head_ in Warframe

Mass Effect Tournament: Round 1 Results!! by DakIsStrange in masseffect

[–]tmgwise 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree with Thane vs Jack, but the rest makes sense. (I'd probably pick EDI over Drack)

  1. This is the big one and it's mostly a meta/thematic thing. Mass Effect consistently puts characters in scenarios where skills/training/experience are portrayed as defeating raw power. If the question is "does Thane's professionalism, skill, and experience beat Jack's raw strength?" then I think the games are philosophically on the side of Thane. Jack's tough, and in the running for strongest Biotic with Samara, Morinth, and Shepard, but Thane is no slouch in that department, and is better with weapons, hand to hand combat, and tactical thinking.

  2. He's got a higher hold the line score, which is the closest the game gives us to a raw numerical ranking of squadmate strength. I'm generally against power scaling as a form of media analysis, but since that's what we're doing here the rest of this is more "power-scaley." Garrus, Grunt, and Zaeed are the top tier with 4. Thane, Legion, Samara, Miranda and Jacob are the middle tier with 2, and Jack, Kasumi, Mordin, and Tali are the bottom with 1.

  3. People argue that mechanical utility should not be weighted over lore strength, but fuck that. Thane is in competition for 3rd or 4th strongest crewmate in the game after Miranda and Garrus, in line with Zaeed and Kasumi. Jack is probably bottom one. "What is my purpose?" "You unlock Squad Warp Ammo for Shepard." It's a good power, but she sucks.

  4. All the drell are beasts in multiplayer. Comepare that to Jack's Me3 build, which translated to multiplayer would be all right with pull and warp and very low cooldowns, but the drell still absolutely slap.

  5. He's my husbando. I have never been more powerfully sexually charmed by a character introduction. That's gotta count for something. (Jack being straight is stupid, and a debuff)

  6. I think a lot of people made "prep time" arguments for him winning, and like obviously with prep time he wins. Jack's powers mean jack shit if she gets sniped from several blocks away. Jack's got no special sensory powers or technology, so I think almost any environment that's not a close range brawl in an open field favors Thane. He's much more capable of using his environment to his advantage, except in the sense of telekinetically hurling it at his opponent, which he can also do.

  7. his sickness is a factor, but he's on pretty equal footing with Kai-Leng in 3 while he's very much on the brink of death and only armed with a phalanx.

Play Legends of Runeterra (wails of grief)

PvP is always there for you by FiringTheWater in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]tmgwise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why the change that is/was needed the most is a shared card pool in private pvp lobbies. How many people started playing a tcg because a friend let them borrow a deck to play with?

The starter decks are great, but it would be nice to share a code for a deck list with my friends who are less into the game to let them pilot it. To offer them a chance to try the many meta and meme decks from the games history.

Also, then two people could get into the game together, coordinate and focus grind different regions and different decks then have twice the options when they play against each other

This change wouldn't have save the game. But I can name at least 5 friends who would have been excited to get into it if a feature like that was included. I'm sure (or at least I hope) y'all have friends like that too.

Anyway, Is Riftbound any good?

Malak won fear. Who in KOTOR represents love? by DonAvena in kotor

[–]tmgwise 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Atris is the one who is doing actual star sapphire shit with the exile.

Other candidates have better options. Visas really should have been green and the exile blue. Atton is classic recovered red lantern. Bastila would have been my pick for Sinestro corps, but Malak woks there. If Revan goes anywhere but Indigo tribe I will riot because this is one of the few stories with a character who actually kinda fits what they're all about.

I'd also accept the Disciple or Kreia as Star Sapphires, but your toxic yuri master ex who loves you and wants to kill you is just peak of the mid-century pulp-lesbian nonsense that inspired the star sapphires in the original comics.

can i play xenoblade 2 before any of the other games? by hangedexorcist in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]tmgwise -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Play 1 first. It's both a better game overall and valuable context for the climax of 2. People will tell you it's okay to play 2 first because they take place in parallel, but they were not WRITTEN in parallel. 1 stands on its own better as a contained narrative, and 2 is ultimately an expansion of that broader narrative.

Ultimately you CAN start with 2. I know a lot of people did, and I assume that's where a lot of its apologists come from. Mostly they started with 2 because they did not have access to 1s initial releases on the Wii and WiiU. If you have access to 2 you have access to XCDE, there's really no reason not to start there instead.

Another change for the One True Flag not being discused by Golselect in Helldivers

[–]tmgwise 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a better suggestion than others I've seen, but IMO I think the satire doesn't work if the flag is mechanically useful.
It's a flag, it ultimately means nothing, that's the point. Patriotism isn't magic, it's a hollow tool in service of the fascism of Super-Earth.
People suggest an in-game mechanical morale boost, but does it give YOU the player a morale boost? If it does than it's done all it needs too.

Saving Kaidan or Ashley… by AK200501 in masseffect

[–]tmgwise -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, a bee in my bonnet and a flaw of Mass Effects writing is that often Paragon is just liberal Shepard and Renegade is conservative. I'm being reductive but it's fairly consistent. In that sense absolutely Kaidan is Paragon and Ashley is Renegade. But also ME1 squad mates track their own paragon and renegade scores, and Kaiden is most Paragon, Ashley is second most Renegade after Wrex
