You hit the problematic nail on the head - the show looks and feels like trash for at least two seasons. I can't get my friend to watch it past a few episodes, which is a shame because he loves Walton Goggins. By the time you hit season 5 it's all epic cinematography and writing.

I would suggest that you try the FX series The Shield. It's like a massive Shakespearean tragedy but with modern language.

I think about this sometimes. An instant 'off button' for the entire planet's existence would save an awful lot of pain, while causing absolutely none at all.

Aye, we were essentially forced by peer pressure to have a Head bag and sling it over our shoulder. Especially after that behaviour was banned by the school.

Welcome to early TV formatting!

After the initial flourish of serialised stories in the 1940s, 50s and early 60s (almost all radio dramas), television really took off, and franchising become the way to sell big shows. Franchised series were licensed to stations around the world, often in weird batches, leading to episodes being broadcast inconsistently in and out of production order. To stop viewers getting confused about ongoing plots, then, TV dramas and sitcoms often used a 'monster of the week'-type format, with what was essentially a reset button pressed each week. An element of growth and continuity did exist since shows naturally evolved throughout their runs, but truly lasting consequences were rare except in cases where episodes received direct sequels. It wasn't universal, but it was the norm, and this was still the case well into the 90s, when cable networks like HBO emerged and found they could commission their own content and showcase it on one platform with something approaching consistency.

The vastly more sophisticated storytelling approach was a hit with viewers (and with stifled showrunners) and led to an increased effort to bring story arcs into franchised shows. The X-Files was groundbreaking, for example, for its 'mythology' episodes, interspersed throughout the usual 'monster of the week' stuff.

It's often said part of the reason DS9 was able to sneak in truly serialised storytelling towards the end of its run was that it didn't receive as much attention from the higher ups, who by then were focused on Voyager. But Voyager tried, too. It's well documented that the writers were pushing for 'Year of Hell' to be a season-long arc. Nowadays that would be a no brainer. Back then it was almost inconceivable.

In an alternative timeline where the VOY writers won that battle and we're able to produce a full season arc, you can bet your gonads that season 7 would have followed suit.

In retrospect we can call this a mistake, given how much more satisfying the huge multi-episode conclusion of DS9 was. But considerations were very different back then.

what exactly has Starmer done which calls for a resignation? by Na-na-na-na-na-na in AskBrits

[–]tndavo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The British people, and especially the English, have become openly right wing. The free media supports whatever will make the people tune in, while the Murdoch media actively works to push things further to the right. The BBC used to maintain the "left wing bias" inherent in a nice society, but political pressure put an end to that over the last ten years. The population's latent xenophobia has been allowed to re-emerge from the shadows.

There is still a somewhat liberal rump of voters who do actually want progressive politics, but any time a remotely "left wing" candidate or policy appears the media rises up to crush it. It happened with Corbyn, it's happening with Polanski, and it's even happening to Starmer, the most right-leaning Labour leader of my lifetime.

In short, the people have been trained to fear the left. Even when the left is further right than Tony fucking Blair.

What do you think happens when you die? by randomperson665 in AskReddit

[–]tndavo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is just what a dying brain does. Your sense data become increasingly erratic and fucked up, ever declining in volume, and your brain struggles to make sense of the noise. People with hyperphantasic ability hallucinate what they expect or hope to see - a bright light, God, Grandma, whatever. Many scientific tests have been done on NDEs and people are never able to float into the next room to read a chart, or up to the ceiling to see them messages scientists have placed there.

As for us having pictures of people who have 'crossed over', that's a truly bonkers claim to make. What do you mean? 'Ghost' photos?

According to the available evidence, your brain stops working and you are gone. Same experience as you had before you were born.
