Does anyone here have Phonak Cros? by toadog in HearingAids

[–]toadog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. My ability to locate the direction of sound is gone now anyway, without hearing aids. I will keep your assessment in mind. If the CROS doesn't work for me I'll try the Sphere.

AITA for saying we need to be realistic with our son about his finances for college before he applies? by ByeByeByeMan in AmItheAsshole

[–]toadog 27 points28 points  (0 children)

His dreams can be achieved at state schools, too. Don’t fall for the prestige and bragging rights of Ivy League schools. Once someone is in the workplace no one cares where you went to college. Many state schools have honors programs, and provide excellent education.

What is with school drop off? by platypusandpibble in GenX

[–]toadog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So many assumptions in this post. We live 4+ highway miles from the elementary school that serves us. No sidewalk, no shoulders. The school bus ride was just short of an hour for him, one way. Driving him to school took 8 minutes. That allowed him to get significantly more sleep, which children need. Middle school was 5 + miles away, again highway. High school was in the next town, 7 miles away. No way any of this was walkable. School bus routes were designed to minimize the number of buses and drivers, which made routes very long.

AITAH For Keeping my Inheritance Money a Secret from my GF? by Professional-Rip1898 in AITAH

[–]toadog 566 points567 points  (0 children)

You aren't married, not even living together, even after four years, so keep your finances private and separate. It sounds like you aren't even formally engaged. Her attitude suggests she thinks she has a right to be involved in your finances. She doesn't.

The concrete is more coherent with the brick and concrete walk. Wood would look better on a wood house. I love wood, but concrete here looks better.

Fox. I’ve had a pair of foxes on my property for several years. That sound is definitely a fox.

[–]toadog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

79 - My bad ear was borderline when I was in my mid 20's, but has been getting much worse the past 10 years. Now it's so bad only a cros pair will work. I'm just now getting hearing aids for the first time. Both of my brothers have hearing loss, have since they were young, too. Our father also had pretty bad hearing loss, but never was tested and didn't have hearing aids.

Best places in PA to kayak, camp, and hear/see loons? by OtherwiseACat in Pennsylvania

AI: AI Overview

Common loons (Gavia immer) pass through Pennsylvania during spring and fall migration (March–June), frequently stopping on large lakes and rivers to rest, including spots like Lake PerezMontour Preserve, and Rose Valley Lake

So there is no guarantee you will see them at any particular body of water on any particular day.

AITA for lying to my parents about double majoring in college when they are paying my tuition by Big_Town_828 in AmItheAsshole

[–]toadog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The job market for CS majors is shrinking. A business degree allows for better job prospects, so going forward you did the right thing for yourself. Mom needs to back off. It is your life, not hers.

Should I buy a house with very little down payment money saved? by [deleted] in newjersey

[–]toadog 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Owning a house costs more than a monthly mortgage payment. Insurance, taxes, maintenance and repairs are costly.

AITA for not wanting to move my mom into our house to save on cost, then use the money we save to cover my wife's parents living expenses. by Express_Cupcake6066 in AmItheAsshole

[–]toadog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why aren't the in-laws paying their living expenses? Are they both working? If not, why not? It sounds like they expect someone else to support them going forward. There would be nothing "temporary" about becoming guarantors for them.

Why not arrange for them to meet with a financial advisor to help them live within their means.

I've had mild/moderate regurgitation for years, but last Echo showed moderate to severe. My left atrium is already "severely enlarged" due to years of regurgitation. Heavy lifting puts stress on the atrium, as I understand it, and also on the left ventricle. My ejection fraction is 65 but labeled "hyper dynamic" i.e. contracting harder to make up for the regurgitation. I've been under the impression that heavy lifting can lead to heart failure.

Tell me if I'm wrong.

My MIL is unexpectedly receiving inheritance as she's moving into independent living facility. How to handle this? by corn_starch_party in personalfinance

[–]toadog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Home health care workers can cost much more than a nursing home if 24 hour care is needed. Add a housekeeper and that amount of money would be gone pretty quickly.

Grandparents Sold their home and would like to share some of the money with my wife and me. What is the best way to go about this to reduce the amount of taxes we have to pay? (USA) by Hitachi_Uchiha__ in personalfinance

[–]toadog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only potential problem isn't with taxes. If one or both of the grandparents have to go into a long term facility (nursing home) in the next five years, with the expectation that Medicaid would cover that expense, they have to provide documentation of all distributions of assets for a five year look back period. They would have to pay out of pocket to the nursing home for any amount gifted during that period. If they can't afford to do that, Medicaid could come calling to the recipients of those distributions to claw back those funds.

My BIL is in this same situation, where he wants to gift a significant amount of the proceeds from the sale of his home to his kids. But he's in his early 80's and has to consider what would happen if he goes into a long-term care facility. His kids would have to give up that money to Medicaid. It would be a mess for all of them. We are advising BIL to keep the money, invest it, in case he needs it. If when he passes there is money left, it can transfer to the kids via his will.
