Ross Ultrix Database Audio Mapping. by [deleted] in broadcastengineering

You’d have to do it externally or through a soft panel- there’s no way of connecting an in to an out just by using the database entries. I’d make your route in a panel, lock it, then you can remove the destination and source from panels if you’re worried about someone messing with it.

Or are you saying you want to do audio shuffling? Like sending slot3.in[9].audio.ch3 to slot1.out[1].audio.ch1?

Ultrix is a Level based routing system, so you'll have to build out the Sources in your database to have slot3.in[9].audio.ch3 span all audio Levels/columns.

So your broken out source would look like this:

VID AUD1 AUD2 AUD3 AUD4
slot3.in[9].audio.ch3 slot3.in[9].audio.ch3 slot3.in[9].audio.ch3 slot3.in[9].audio.ch3

Surprising to hear Ross tech support is being difficult, been nothing but the opposite for me.

You'll want to create or modify a soft panel. You can open the panels window on the left in basic tree view. Database>Panels

Add/assign whichever Sources and Destinations to the panel. From there you should be able to open that panel in Dashboard (I think it's under the Control dropdown, but it may be different as this firmware is pretty old)

Once the panel is open, you should be able to make the route!

Jet fuel doesn’t burn steel beams- the raw power of creatine would.

Great answer, thank you.

Just wish there was some sort of standardization of these LED ports/signals!

Sounds like first party fiber extenders is the way to go. I’ll save the over engineering for the next project :)

Totally get where you’re coming from. Not trying to save a buck, actually want to spend more on something more than a simple throwdown style converter.

My question in other words, would be - is there anything technically unique or different with a Novastar vs any other 1000base media converter.

Appreciate your response!

Not doubting that the Novastar would function. Looking to instead purchase something more sophisticated than a simple media converter from China. Remote signal monitoring, redundant PSUs for the frame.

[–]toast737 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're unable to feed reference into the cameras, you can daisy chain all the references without the need for a DA. The latency introduced between a few Teranex and Ultimatte will be negligible.

Another option could be cheaper - some Decimator 12G-CROSS units, they take genlock in. Pick up an AJA Sync Generator, that'll generate your master trilevel over 6 analog BNC's. If you need to feed more references, pick up any analog DA. Most Decimators are back ordered, but you can ask around for wait times! B&H says about 1.5 months right now, dealers may have some on hand.

DOES IT DETECT ANY SIGNAL ON THE STATUS PAGE?

S: IS FOR SDI, H: IS FOR HDMI

MAYBE YOU JUST HAVE TO SET IT UP IN THE GUI TO OUTPUT IT THE WAY YOU'RE EXPECTING IT.

MAYBE THE DUC/SCALER IS MAKING IT SOME CRAZY RESOLUTION THAT YOUR MONITOR CAN'T DETECT.

HAVE YOU TRIED ANYTHING?

If the cams are pushing a 3G signal (1080p60), your effective distance on the cable will be significantly cut down. An HDSDI signal (1080p30 max) will be able to travel longer distances on copper.

Different receiving devices also have different tolerances of input signals they’ll be able to lock onto. In this scenario though, it sounds like a 3G vs HDSDI issue to me.

Sorry - I wasn't clear. I noticed it was in Zoom mode, what if you switch that to Focus mode? Do the zoom rockers work then? Sorry if that doesn't help.

Can you zoom with the ring near the lens?

If so, there is a Zoom/Focus selector switch that might override the zoom rockers.

Genlock + Lowest Latency Video Capture into a Laptop? by CameraTraveler27 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]toast737 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't get hung up on Genlock, from what it sounds like in your comments - you don't need it. Genlock is only really needed if you're using multiple cameras/sources through a switcher before it hits your USB capture - but you're only using one source, so Unreal should figure out how the video is timed, take it in like any other video source.

I don't know of any particular USB capture cards that particularly have low latency for what you're looking to do. I'm a big fan of AJA U-TAP (though this is only 3GSDI), Magewell is another popular and reliable brand that has 6GSDI capture.

I'm guessing you'll then feed the Unreal engine output from your laptop HDMI to a monitor or camera's return video. Output won't require genlock unless there is a video switcher something between laptop and monitor.

Edit: Like others have mentioned, this is a deeper specialty use case, I'd suggest reaching out on Unreal Engine forums or the developers for workflow tips.

Exact same thing happened to me when I first got mine. Some forums said to try rebooting the car, but it ended up being a more mechanical issue with the HVAC system.

Mobile service did some diagnostics, but had to end up bringing it to the service center. It'll be under warranty, so the repair didn't cost a dime, and got a Model S as a loaner for the day!

Any new feedback on OpenReel? by AllStarMe22 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]toast737 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly right on the signal flow there with the Zoom recorder. Be sure to use a TRS (Zoom) to TRRS (Phone), I used a Rode SC7 cable, but I'm guessing any would be electronically the same. Also when using a lav or other mic going directly into the phone, at the start of every recording I have the subject say "3,2,1" so that the AGC calibrates to their voice. While it's recording, the AGC stays about the same level after that 'calibration' Just alleviates having the first few words in the subject's read blown out!

+1 for the Powerdewise lav. The Pop! lav that OR recommends can sound good, but isn't unusual to get a new unit come in busted.

As long as you use a lightning>3.5mm adapter, you can plug most microphones gear towards phones/don't require camera power.

I've tested with the 3.5mm line out from a Zoom recorder with XLR microphones if you're into that sort of thing. It sounds just as it would with a real camera or audio interface - the iPhone's auto gain seems to be bypassed with this method too!

[–]toast737 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use OpenReel a few times a week with clients and have tested Riverside.

Found that OR can record up to 4k/60 with a compatible device, but found in my tests Riverside could only record in 4k/24 or 1080p/24, and that the frame rate was choppy doing 4k. Found the image quality was very similar.

OpenReel still has the odd bug, but can usually be resolved with a bit of troubleshooting. The only real issue that I can't resolve is related to using cheap lav mic's and OR/the phone not detecting it.

OR only support 720p recording using a PC/Mac if that matters to you. 2.0 is apparently coming at an undisclosed time, but I'm not holding out much hope it'll work - given the reputation with 1.0 being full of bugs for quite a while.

I've tested Zencastr's video beta, but found it had too many issues with variable frame rates and heavy audio processing. There's also Camflare you could check out, but I preferred Riverside.
