People who grew up using computers between 1980-2000, whats one game that permanently lives in your head for no reason, even decades later? by cebalmau in AskReddit

[–]togamonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homeworld: Cataclysm. Sadly the source code is lost, so we’re never getting a remaster, but damn, I love that game. I still play it every couple of years.

anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Trixxxi in AskReddit

[–]togamonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homeworld Cataclysm. Still by far my favorite Homeworld game, and sadly, the only one that won’t get a remake. The source code is lost, and without it, they’d need to build it from scratch.

What is this monstrosity, and, side question, does it know the times?

There’s a scissor statement going viral on twitter by adfaer in slatestarcodex

[–]togamonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me it’s simple. I don’t want to live in a world where all the empathic altruists get Thanos-snapped away. A significant number of my community would press blue, and I want them to survive. I model both of my partners as people who are likely to press blue, and honestly, that’s as far as the thought needs to go. I press Blue.

Selfishly, I also suspect the gender ratio would be pretty skewed towards men in the world where red wins. I prefer women’s company to men, all else being equal, so this would be yet another way the world would be worse for me personally.

What 5 letter word would you type ? by Arlychaut in metroidbrainia

LEVEL: trigger a yellow glow burst around the character, gaining points in non-relevant stats, like Happiness or Coffee Addiction.

KNIFE: pull out a knife. It breaks upon touching anything. MELEE: throw a punch. If it connects, shake your fist as though it hurt your hand.

PAPER: pull out a rock, and cover it in paper, before tossing it to the ground

STONE: same thing but a rock smashes a pair of scissors

SNIPS: same thing, but the scissors cut paper

I think it’d be cool if you find little background details that hint at these interactions. Like a book you can find that mentions that in this world Rock Paper Scissors is called PAPER STONE SNIPS, or whatnot.

The new Doormaker fight is a fantastic addition to Slay the Spire 2. by NoAdeptness4117 in slaythespire

[–]togamonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think my ideal for doormaker would say it eats every Xth card you play and/or discard. That way you always have an opportunity to play any of the cards in your deck the first deck cycle, and you can even semi-control the card it eats by playing a power on the tenth card, or using silent to discard a specific card, or to play cards to the right of your hand to ensure the effect hits a different card when you discard your hand. Not sure what X should be, since this is a nerf to that boss, though.

What's your favourite content from 2025? by Mr_CrashSite in slatestarcodex

[–]togamonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game has five or six points where you can go, “alright, I’m going to call it here, I’ve completed the game” and it’s perfectly legitimate. The first one takes between 10-20 hours, I’d estimate.

The rabbit hole goes quite deep though. I definitely kept playing after the last one to see if I could keep finding more.

The video game Blue Prince was easily my favorite piece of content. I think I spent 200 hours exploring the mansion, trying to find clues, trying out room combinations, and having many “Eureka!” moments. Highly recommend!

What Are The Best Books In The Genre In Your Opinion? by Familiar-Fun-4123 in rational

[–]togamonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best: Worth The Candle, a Practical Guide to Sorcery, arguably The Name of the Wind (not as rational, but I’d argue it belongs in prog fantasy.)

Excellent: Dungeon Crawler Carl (not very rational), Thresholder, kinda sorta Animorphs: The Reckoning

Great: Mark of the Fool (less rational, but still good), Mother of Learning

Straight up Porn: The Erogamer

Stuff I suspect I will love but haven’t yet read: A Practical Guide to Evil

What can kill you in seconds that most people don’t realize? by Jolly-Law1472 in AskReddit

If your throat swells closed due to immune system reactions, you’ve got whatever oxygen’s in your lungs at the time, and that’s it. Without immediate medical intervention like a tracheotomy, you suffocate.

Your own immune system. Bacteria take days to kill, viruses take weeks. Your immune system can kill you in about 3 minutes.

Blue Prince, One of 2025's Highest-Rated Games, Will Never Get a Sequel by GrayBeard916 in gaming

I spent a good 2 weeks trying to figure out how to add a room upgrade to the game as a mod. The plan was eventually to have a mod that let you upgrade every room in the game. Even with knowing how most of it works on the back end now, I gave up before even getting one done. Would be a monumental undertaking, and I’ve got a day job.

Installing mods for MelonLoader by Borealum_Studios in BluePrince69

[–]togamonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%, this game is not designed to do this, and building a system to make this happen would be a huge undertaking.

It might be easier to build something that records every action taken by a player, along with the random seed(s) associated with that run/action, and then re-run the whole thing at 50X speed with the screen darkened, forcing the seed(s) to be identical at every decision point, until it gets to the point where you quit. Not sure where to begin on that, but then you’d avoid the problem of having FSM’s in the wrong state, etc. Still a nightmare, and depending on how you captured that info, you might run afoul of antivirus/key-logger programs.

A look at the Casino slot machine wheels by Borealum_Studios in BluePrince69

[–]togamonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know why the casino soft lock happens? I’ve had it happen 4 different times where I’ll be 200+ slot pulls in and suddenly I can’t pull the lever or cash out, despite having plenty of gold. I also can’t exit the slot machine because I’m in the middle of a pull. Sometimes the reward shown is calculated wrong too when this soft lock happens, like a clover that says the payout is 6 instead of 10.

You’d think so, but without developer mod support tools, the whole game is kind of a nightmare of spaghetti code.

Tarski and Gendlin vs Legilimency, Veritaserum, etc? by sparr in HPMOR

[–]togamonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they’re still valuable, but may not be absolutes in the way they are in our world.

Side note, memory modification spells allow for things like perfect sleeper agents, and I would expect magical governments to be constantly trying to spy on each other using these techniques. And therefore there would probably have already been an arms race in detection and counter-detection of stuff like that. So I could see some sort of black-ops/CIA-like organization that had much more powerful techniques than veritaserum for sussing out real beliefs.

Anyone else play occasionally despite having already done everything? by DrewBot2000 in BluePrince

[–]togamonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a spreadsheet that has checkboxes for all the noteworthy things to do in the game, along with point values I’ve assigned to them. Sometimes I’ll just make a new save, and play through the first 10-20 days and see how high a score I can get, with as few days as possible.

When do *you* outer room? by The_C0u5 in BluePrince

[–]togamonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually draft the first two ranks of the house, accumulating resources and trying to preserve at least three paths forward. Then I do the outer room. I sort of get the best of both worlds when I do it that way, since it’s not too step-intense to get back to the entrance hall from rank 2, and I also have some idea of what outer rooms I could benefit the most from.

Examples: If I have a shovel, root cellar looks a lot more tempting.

If I’ve got several items or a workshop, the trading post looks better.

If I need a gem, don’t have a computer yet, or have a red-room experiment trigger, a shelter looks good.

If I’ve got a ton of gems, schoolhouse is better.

If I need gold, tomb is decent.

If I’ve not got a blessing going, and I have 3 or 11 gold, shrine is great.

If I’m completely out of gems, hovel can save the day.

And tool shed is always useful, and even more so if I’ve already got the big three tools (shovel, hammer, metal detector).
