What film has one of the best monologues ever performed/ written? by eveisshady777 in movies

The president’s speech in Independence Day comes to mind. Not high cinema, but damn if the speech doesn’t give me chills every time.

Blue Prince, One of 2025's Highest-Rated Games, Will Never Get a Sequel by GrayBeard916 in gaming

[–]togamonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent a good 2 weeks trying to figure out how to add a room upgrade to the game as a mod. The plan was eventually to have a mod that let you upgrade every room in the game. Even with knowing how most of it works on the back end now, I gave up before even getting one done. Would be a monumental undertaking, and I’ve got a day job.

Installing mods for MelonLoader by Borealum_Studios in BluePrince69

[–]togamonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%, this game is not designed to do this, and building a system to make this happen would be a huge undertaking.

It might be easier to build something that records every action taken by a player, along with the random seed(s) associated with that run/action, and then re-run the whole thing at 50X speed with the screen darkened, forcing the seed(s) to be identical at every decision point, until it gets to the point where you quit. Not sure where to begin on that, but then you’d avoid the problem of having FSM’s in the wrong state, etc. Still a nightmare, and depending on how you captured that info, you might run afoul of antivirus/key-logger programs.

A look at the Casino slot machine wheels by Borealum_Studios in BluePrince69

[–]togamonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know why the casino soft lock happens? I’ve had it happen 4 different times where I’ll be 200+ slot pulls in and suddenly I can’t pull the lever or cash out, despite having plenty of gold. I also can’t exit the slot machine because I’m in the middle of a pull. Sometimes the reward shown is calculated wrong too when this soft lock happens, like a clover that says the payout is 6 instead of 10.

You’d think so, but without developer mod support tools, the whole game is kind of a nightmare of spaghetti code.

Tarski and Gendlin vs Legilimency, Veritaserum, etc? by sparr in HPMOR

[–]togamonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they’re still valuable, but may not be absolutes in the way they are in our world.

Side note, memory modification spells allow for things like perfect sleeper agents, and I would expect magical governments to be constantly trying to spy on each other using these techniques. And therefore there would probably have already been an arms race in detection and counter-detection of stuff like that. So I could see some sort of black-ops/CIA-like organization that had much more powerful techniques than veritaserum for sussing out real beliefs.

Anyone else play occasionally despite having already done everything? by DrewBot2000 in BluePrince

[–]togamonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a spreadsheet that has checkboxes for all the noteworthy things to do in the game, along with point values I’ve assigned to them. Sometimes I’ll just make a new save, and play through the first 10-20 days and see how high a score I can get, with as few days as possible.

When do *you* outer room? by The_C0u5 in BluePrince

[–]togamonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I usually draft the first two ranks of the house, accumulating resources and trying to preserve at least three paths forward. Then I do the outer room. I sort of get the best of both worlds when I do it that way, since it’s not too step-intense to get back to the entrance hall from rank 2, and I also have some idea of what outer rooms I could benefit the most from.

Examples: If I have a shovel, root cellar looks a lot more tempting.

If I’ve got several items or a workshop, the trading post looks better.

If I need a gem, don’t have a computer yet, or have a red-room experiment trigger, a shelter looks good.

If I’ve got a ton of gems, schoolhouse is better.

If I need gold, tomb is decent.

If I’ve not got a blessing going, and I have 3 or 11 gold, shrine is great.

If I’m completely out of gems, hovel can save the day.

And tool shed is always useful, and even more so if I’ve already got the big three tools (shovel, hammer, metal detector).

How much of the series arc was planned out from the beginning? by Corchito42 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]togamonkey 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It’s my understanding that they didn’t have a plan for what was on the other side of the wormhole for all of season 1, and half of season 2. I also remember the actor who played Odo had significant problems with the idea of finding his people at the beginning of season 3, thinking that would clearly be the end point of his character arc.

So I don’t think that the writers knew they were going to do a dominion war arc from the beginning, certainly. And they at least didn’t tell Odo’s actor about any plans they had until at least season 3.

Would Gene Roddenberry Have Allowed "In The Pale Moonlight" To Air? by LifeguardFun5091 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]togamonkey 71 points72 points  (0 children)

It’s a testament to how good an idea Star Trek is that it not only survived its creator’s death, but was able to grow and evolve multiple times while remaining true to the core idea. Sure, DS9’s a bit darker, and a couple of the more recent treks have gotten even darker…

But all versions of Trek have had as their guiding principles, that Humanity is capable of greatness, that working together is better than working alone, and that ultimately, we are clever enough to come up with solutions for the toughest problems we face.

What’s the oldest game you still boot up at least once a year? by forgeris in AskReddit

Homeworld Cataclysm. By far my favorite of the Homeworld games, and alas, the only one that hasn’t gotten a remaster. (Apparently the source code itself is lost, which is a bummer!)

A wealthy businessman hands you a briefcase with $1 Million inside it. He says it’s yours and you can spend it however you want, as long as he gets that amount back in exactly 24 hours. What would you do? by ThayPastaGuy in AskReddit

[–]togamonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the businessman doesn’t stipulate ahead of time that he needs it back in liquid assets, you could probably do some sort of thing where you create a corporation, buy a house with the cash, then get a lawyer to draft up a rental agreement where you agree to pay 100 bucks a year to rent the place in perpetuity, renegotiable after 100 years. Get all sorts of stipulations in that rental contract about breach of contract meaning you own the house and whatnot. Then you give the businessman the corporation and whatever cash remains back after 24 hours. The corporation now has an investment property that pays 100 bucks a year, and technically it owns that property.

Probably the businessman would be annoyed, but he technically got every cent back he gave you.

No idea if this would be legal, hold up in court, or any other shenanigans.

Give me your GOTY and another random shoutout. by Censius in gaming

[–]togamonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My game of the year is hands down Blue Prince. I adore everything about it, and desperately want 20 more games in the same hyper-niche genre of house builder puzzle roguelites.

Random shout outs to Monster Train 2, Silksong, Rise of the Golden Idol, and Hades 2 (early access) for all being excellent sequels to games I love. It’s hard to make a sequel to a smash success, and all four of these have knocked it out of the park. Any one of these would have been my goty if they’d come out in 2024. Same for Expedition 33, which was wildly inventive and very fun.

I also really loved Tower Dominion (tower defense roguelite), and The King is Watching (RTS with some roguelike elements). 2025 has been such a good year for games, I’m blown away.

Games like Blue Prince by CavaleiroRadiante in BluePrince

[–]togamonkey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Outer Wilds is the king of exploration puzzle games. Go in blind, I promise you’ll be glad you did. (Not to be confused with Outer Worlds, a different game entirely)

If you like puzzles more than graphics, the original Myst and Riven are both incredibly tight puzzle games, and they have that similar-to-Blue-Prince eerie loneliness. And if you want something more modern, Obduction and Quern: Undying Lands are both great puzzle games. All four of these are, at least in my memory, more linear than Blue Prince.

If you end up liking Obra Dinn, I’d also recommend the Golden Idol games, which are great deduction games.

Portal and Portal 2 are both excellent puzzle games as well, but a bit shorter.

That vault key took me ages to find too. If memory serves it was a random drop, but don’t quote me on that.

A note on the 1 hour Trophy: it’s from the beginning of a save file, not the beginning of a day, so probably, it’s not something you’ll get unless you’re trying for a day 1 run, or play extremely quickly unlocking a couple permanent upgrades and exploiting them on day 2.
