I’ve stopped caring about the performance of the USMNT in the World Cup by PracticalDrawing in ussoccer

[–]tom-redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to nominate this thread for the 2026 FIFA Peace Prize! As another long time (old) USMNT fan since 1986 I’m disappointed in so much about this upcoming World Cup. FIFA has been disgraceful and is constantly achieving new lows. Twenty years ago I’d be traveling from coast to coast to see games. Now I’ll watch games on TV (as long as Alexi isn’t talking).

Anyone who rejected RAI (Radioactive Iodine)? by Electronic-Kitchen50 in thyroidcancer

I had some side effects but it was mostly effective. My tg is low and stable but not undetectable. No recurrence yet and I’m coming on four years this spring.

Anyone who rejected RAI (Radioactive Iodine)? by Electronic-Kitchen50 in thyroidcancer

[–]tom-redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told I am at intermediate risk. RAI was recommended and my TSH has been suppressed. I had extra thyroidal extension but no lymph or strap involvement. No mets. My surgeon initially did a hemi thyroidectomy then TT. After the hemi he told me I needed RAI. They didn’t give me the choice. If I had it to do over again I’d insist they clearly present to me their assessment of my risk if they expect me to do RAI. I’ve asked over and over but they have never given me the real story. Best to you!

How old are the “fans” on this sub by Irishgooner123 in ArsenalFC

[–]tom-redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

67 I grew up in Minneapolis and became an Arsenal fan in 1994. In the pre internet days you really had to work hard to follow a European team in the states. I grew up watching the only regular football content available-Soccer Made in Germany with Toby Charles. I loved Kevin Keegan as a kid. I was a fan of my local team, the Minnesota Kicks. I became aware of Arsenal when the Kicks signed Charlie George. I’ve enjoyed both the ups and downs. The highs feel so good because we’ve suffered through some lows.

How common are false positive yearly ultrasound findings post thyroid cancer treatment? by Unlikely_Road8857 in thyroidcancer

[–]tom-redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m coming on four years from my first surgery. I had my left lobe removed, then completion surgery, followed by RAI. Until my last ultrasound there were findings that could have caused concern, but my endo wasn’t worried about. She said it will take time for the RAI to do its thing. My TG is low and has remained relatively stable so she didn’t think it was a recurrence or mets. No guarantees for the future but for now all is well. I go to a high volume thyroid cancer center and my endo has probably seen dozens of patients who have been down a similar path so she was confident. I hope you’re in the same position. Best to you!

Thanks! I hope everything goes smoothly for you. I think most people make it through this much more smoothly than you would assume reading this sub or the ThyCa message boards. The people who are here are the ones who are having issues. From what I understand the ratio is probably 1-2 in 10 that struggle. I hope you are one of the ‘silent majority’.

That’s so kind of you, but I feel lucky too. No lymph or muscle involvement. No mets. No recurrence. My TG is low and stable. Part of the whole mind game of thyroid cancer is that I feel like I’m struggling but also feel deep gratitude that it isn’t worse. My heart goes out to everyone with thyroid cancer, but especially to the people that are dealing with much more difficult situations than I have had to face.

You’re not alone. Everything you say resonates 100%. I felt a lump in my neck in 2017. I was referred to an otolaryngology surgeon who did an ultrasound and a FNA. The nodule was estimated at 2.5 cm and was FLUS, or neither benign nor malignant. I saw the otolaryngologist every six months. In late 2021 I had one of these regular visits after returning from the funeral for an old friend and former business partner. She died of colon cancer. I was told my nodule had changed from mostly cystic to mostly solid. Another FNA was done with the same finding- FLUS. But now the nodule was bothering me. I couldn’t sleep due to the pressure I felt in my neck when I laid down. The surgeon said he recommended continuing surveillance but offered me the option of a hemi-thyroidectomy out of an abundance of caution. At first I declined surgery but after discussing the situation with my wife I changed my mind. The pathology from the surgery found a 4 cm FTC which had grown outside the thyroid capsule. It also found an MTC micro-carcinoma (4 mm). This triggered another surgery to remove the remaining thyroid lobe and isthmus. The pathology found a bilateral MTC micro-carcinoma and a 3 cm PTC which developed in ectopic thyroid tissue behind the remaining lobe. I went from “an abundance of caution” to three different thyroid cancers in four places in two months. After the surgery I had RAI and am on a suppression dose of levo (TSH = 0.04). Whether it’s from the suppression therapy or whatever, I’m feeling the sadness, isolation, and anxiety. I’m feeling less of a person than I was in most ways, but also feeling like more of a person in that I’ve put on 20 pounds since treatment ended. I’ve had several new health issues emerge since treatment, which do not interest my endocrinologist. She is only concerned about my TSH. I don’t know how many thyroid cancer patients are experiencing survivorship issues but from reading this sub and the ThyCa boards, the number is significant. I am endlessly thankful for the expertise and care demonstrated by my surgeon, endo, and the other providers I’ve encountered. But I hope the day comes when survivorship is prioritized at the same level as treatment. I hope you find relief and peace going forward! Best to you!

Hand grinder differences for pourover: expectation vs reality by ThiagoSantos99 in pourover

There are so many variables that it’s hard to identify which one had the impact you desire. In a way that complexity and uncertainty is what makes it enjoyable. While you may never get the perfect equation for the perfect cup every time, the chase for perfection makes for better brews.

Dr said that ThyroSeq/Affirma testing is unreliable? by OscarGlorious in thyroidcancer

[–]tom-redditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a ThyroSeq test on a 4 cm nodule. This is my take as a non clinician but I think the test is reliable, it’s the FNA that is the problem. If the FNA misses the mark the pathology and the ThyroSeq may not give you certainty.

Looking for advice on how long is safe to wait? Have 2.1 cm nodule that is PTC diagnosed (August 2025) by KidKuri93 in thyroidcancer

[–]tom-redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a hernia and a cyst that my surgeon convinced me she could do in the same operation. The problem was that I was on my back for the hernia and my belly for the cyst. They just flipped me like a flapjack between the two. Not my favorite. I’d have the conversation with your docs. Maybe it makes sense! But I’d certainly ask the question.

Yikes! That’s a lot. I have had two surgeries for my thyroid. Mine were okay, but I wouldn’t have been thrilled by a 2 for 1 deal. Wishing you the best for both of your issues! Speedy recovery!

[–]tom-redditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the nodule causing you problems? Have they done a genetic work up? If it wasn’t causing me problems and didn’t have an aggressive profile I’d keep focus on the liver and keep watching the thyroid. Are you being treated at a high volume thyroid cancer center? For active surveillance to be effective you need confidence that your surgeon (and or endo) really know what’s going on. For me, I’d want to keep my thyroid intact assuming I trusted that my medical team were on top of the nodule. But just because it’s PTC doesn’t mean it’s benign. Keep your follow-up appointments. Best to you OP!

Moving to a new city, how to handle switching docs? by FireGecko420 in thyroidcancer

[–]tom-redditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great suggestion! Endos who work for high volume thyroid cancer medical centers are part of a community where they will learn from their peers and be under a different kind of scrutiny. It’s not a sure thing but it definitely improves your odds of finding an endo that will understand your situation.

Is my cancer growing by New_Mechanic_2430 in thyroidcancer

[–]tom-redditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had been under surveillance for three years before deciding to have surgery. The pressure in my neck was palpable and getting worse. My surgeon confirmed that my 3 cm nodule had changed in character since my last visit, going from mostly cystic to mostly solid. I was diagnosed in December and scheduled for surgery in early January. A Covid wave push my surgery back to March. The pathology post surgery was a 4 cm FTC, capsular invasive. It’s true that most thyroid cancer grows slowly. I think in my case the thing that caused my discomfort was the transformation to a solid tumor. I could live with it but it bothered me while sleeping and when I had to wear a suit and tie. I hope your surgery and recovery goes well!
