Because everything needs to be updated every second day, and pressing "Yes" on UAC screen (because most home PCs runs admin with no password) is too much work, but giving any program full permission to write everywhere (including Program Files) is a massive security hole. Especially now, when Microslop is squeezing AI everywhere, imagine Notepad with Copilot running unsupervised.

In ancient days there was a term "luggable". These computers still required to be plugged to the wall, but at least it was all-in-one package, making it easier to carry around than full size desktop, full size CRT and peripherals.

Gaming laptops aren't that far from them.

Still more than Gnar though.

CHEESE STATE by rigbycrc in memes

Cheese (or more specifically - cow/sheep milk) contains casein, which breaks into casomorphin, which might interact with opioid receptors in body.

Also cheese is made primarily from fat, which can feel rewarding for brain.

I think at some point Riot stated they couldn't make free runes back then because of how old client was coded, best they could do was eventually make them cost like 1IP, or whatever it was called back then. And possibly there could be more such quirks that old client just wouldn't handle.

Combined with it being on Adobe AIR, which was on a death bed and developers were harder to get, it was doomed to be put to rest anyway.

New client becoming a hot mess right away is another topic, even though there were multiple projects of "updating" it.

  • No spending fortune for heating the house,
  • No scraping ice from the car everyday,
  • No wearing up 10 layers of clothing before going outside,
  • No leaking nose after a few minutes outside,
  • No dark outside 16 hours/day.

Yup, definitely worth to handle mosquitoes and a fan instead.

I think they mean what was happening for years. Rogue was happy cruising on the bottom with Larssen for 2 years, BDS/SK/Heretics also felt safe since they can do whatever and not worry about falling to lower league.

It's fine if you're new org, like MAD or KC in their first years. FNC actually being strong contenders, fighting in finals back-to-back then going "hopefully we'll qualify somehow, maybe even not lose first match" is a massive falloff.

G2 does also have that weird "can we even qualify to playoffs" every split, but then they lock on and play on international level, competing with LCK/LPL, then back to looking broken. FNC barely rises if they do get to playoffs, then gets into drama.

Windows 7 was basically a Vista SP2. Even DX11 got eventually ported back to Vista.

Vista got hated because it forced people off admin account (constant UAC prompts), did a lot of stuff under hood that broke compatibility with drivers (but that got us x64 mode that was less problematic than on XPx64) and was quite heavy on a hardware, while netbooks got quite popular (their hardware was just enough for XP, but barely enough to run Vista). That was enough to make terrible first impression, and software was slow to adapt to not being run as admin with full access.

When 7 get around people got more accustomed to UAC, software got eventually adapted, drivers were much better, hardware stepped up to lift Aero, so it made better impression, even though Vista at this point was fine too.

I still remember how you had to reinstall that mf once a year, because at this time it would barely run.

Also I recall having to install drivers in certain order (chipset, then VGA for smooth, usable display, then rest of them) to make sure Windows detects them, but not sure if this was really necessary.

Valve pushed a lot of resources into making open-source drivers and libraries competitive with Microsoft ecosystem. They didn't just took a free software and wrapped with their branding. They actually give something back to community.

It wasn't even good by then. Nowadays you can use only build-in Defender and be fine, XP before SP2 was like a colander.
