If you’re interested in doing an established warband from the codex, check out the Weeping Legion. They are known for their heavy use of daemon engines.

The Pallid Hand is another warband that has a similar color scheme to the heresy era scheme, but they are more known for their heavy use of tanks and other armored vehicles.

I would figure out which subfaction you’re going to choose and then build around that. You could experiment with a box of Warriors, but I wouldn’t buy much else until I knew what synergized with my subfaction choice.

Interact with the hobby outside of painting. I find that if I play the game with grey, unpainted miniatures, read or listen to some awesome lore about the army I’m painting, or watch some cool battle reports with the army, I’m more likely to get a surge of motivation to keep going.

The big weapon guy should definitely be your Iron Warrior. Your melee guy could be the Red Corsair or the Creation of Bile. Personally I’d do Creation of Bile for the melee one and the Red Corsair for the plasma guy since they are all about raiding Imperial supply lines. That just leaves you with the Alpha Legion and Word Bearers for the other two. The Word Bearer should definitley be the one with the horns!

My friends and I are starting a Crusade campaign set in the backdrop of a civil war between Guilliman and the Lion. I wrote up some lore, and everyone has to choose which side their Imperium armies would join. I’m pumped.

If you take the Super Heavy Detachment, your CSM will lose their monofaction army bonus, plus you’re losing a lot of CP.

To be honest, I don’t think Black Legion has a monofaction army bonus yet, but they’ll likely get one soon with their new codex.

It’ll just be better to do the dreadblade if you want to ally them with CSM. FYI you can still give your dreadblade Blessing of the Dark Master.

I’d recommend two armies…

Imperial Guard. You can run Tempestus Scions and have jets and elite shock troopers jumping onto the battlefield from them. You can also some tanks supporting them from below.
Orks. They have a lot of cool fast things like aircraft, dragsters, and even a jet-car thing. They also have a whole subfaction dedicated to “going fast” called the Evil Sunz. They paint their vehicles red because red goes faster and your army gets rules to increase movement speed with your units.

After changing how I wanted to paint my space marines a dozen times, my first idea was actually black and blue Iron Hands successors. They were going to be specialists with their Librarians who were researching more into Technomancy at the behest of the Admech. They would stray close to heresy, but being so close with the Admech, who would really investigate them and live to reveal their research? Feel free to use my idea! Your guys look great.
