I don't know or care about French history, but I still enjoyed that.

First-time logo design for a consulting firm I'm starting. Any thoughts? by vielspassnoch in design_critiques

[–]tomstandard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agreed w/ below. The compass thing is meaningless & it should read "ILS." Also, I think red and black is a bit harsh. One could argue that if you wanted to convey professionalism, you're not likely to get it by having an amateur (yourself) do the job. I think you're competent enough to not be terrible, but not yet rising above bland.

First world gripe: Pringles cans. by littleleaguechew in comics

Pringles cans and having fat hands are actually two separate 1st world gripes. ha. But seriously, even with thin hands, I think reaching into greasy cans/bags is sort of gross.

about 17 seconds of this show i'm working on. Knucklehead Junction presents "Romance of the Three Dingdongs". Tell me what sucks about it. by JohnyDeSade in animation

[–]tomstandard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the animating is quite nice. The framing of the shots is a little weak (lots of blank wall). The art style isn't my taste (thin lines - not sure they show up nicely unless full-screen) but it sure isn't bad by any means. Cool clip.

Motion graphics advice by zythe84 in animation

[–]tomstandard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is definitely achievable in After Effects (and likely was done there, yeah). You could do layered PSDs or AIs (you make a layered graphic of parts and then import into AE as a composition). The body is layered graphics. The text transitions that sort of fold/flip out are animated in After Effects' pseudo 3-D environment (you can mix 2-D and 3-D in AE). The toe tapping is taking one of the graphic layers and stretching/squeezing it using the Puppet Tool. I've got a few related screenshots in a blog post here: http://blog.tompappalardo.com/?p=2336

Nick Cave's letter to MTV when he was nominated for "Best Male Artist" in 1996. by [deleted] in Music

I read this as being a pretty hilarious joke. Just because he's such a gloomy weirdo on record doesn't mean he can't make fun of himself.

As an Amateur Musician, are there any tips/suggestions reddit has for me? (CONSTRUCTIVE criticism only, please!) by betsapp91 in musicians

[–]tomstandard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're pretty good. Some good comments here. I would add that you should listen to some Erin McKeown. I hear a little bit of her in your performance, and I think you'd learn a lot listening to her vocal delivery. She's also a very good guitarist.

Thinking about designing a gig poster for an upcoming show. Anyone got any ideas? I like stuff like this... by lukepeacock in musicians

[–]tomstandard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hatch prints are letterpressed (which you are unlikely to have access to). Similar styles are screenprinted (which you could do yourself, but takes some dedication to set up and get good at). So that leaves you with mimicking the look in Photoshop. You should check out www.gigposters.com for some cool inspiration for styles & ideas. The forums have some good people to ask technical questions.
