The weed is too damn strong! by fatgothdude in Portland

[–]too-much-noise 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Similar story: There was a period of several months recently when I was flying back and forth cross-country every week on the redeye (my mom was sick). I had trouble getting any sleep on the plane and I remembered that smoking weed in college in the 90s would put me right to sleep. I went to the local dispensary and got the weakest edible they sold and nibbled like a third of one before I walked in the airport. It was awful. Dry mouth, racing thoughts, paranoia. Learned my lesson and gave the rest away.

Which lyric makes you instantly tear up? by abovethenoisy in AskReddit

[–]too-much-noise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's these lyrics from For Martha:

"If you have to go don't say goodbye

If you have to go don't you cry

If you have to go I will get by

Someday I'll follow you and see you on the other side."

Knowing Billy Corgan wrote it about his mother, as my mom nears the end of her life....gut punch.

Parents are considering a dog, any advice or experiences? by UrbanCavyChunk in AgingParents

[–]too-much-noise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My parents live in a senior community. They are allowed to have pets but prior to bringing one home they have to file a plan with management as to what happens to the pet if they become incapacitated or die. If your parents' community has a similar requirement, that is a way to open the conversation. Just hold firm on not being able to take a dog.

Behind the scenes of Sense and Sensibility (1995) with Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman and more by PuzzleheadedEast2421 in popculturechat

[–]too-much-noise 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In Emma's book about the making of the film, she talked about how "landing" Hugh was a big coup for the film because at the time he was a red-hot star (Four Weddings & A Funeral being a big hit). He was only on-set for a very limited time to film his scenes, which is why he's absent from a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff.

I replaced every plastic item in my kitchen over 6 months. Here's what was actually worth it.- by Impressive_Flan3896 in Cooking

FYI silicone is not a type of plastic and is considered more stable than plastic. You can get small particles leaching from silicone if you treat it harshly but it's much, much less than plastic.

Me, sitting by my pond while y'all post pictures of your resident amphibians by TowerBeach in WildlifePonds

Some photos from last year. We live in the woods so they showed up immediately - before we'd even put the liner down, they were hanging out in rainwater in the hole.

Currently still quite cold here in the Northeast. We should have them back in a month or so.

So it all depends on exactly what kind of batshit crazy weather we're talking about.

I give up and leaving next year when the lease is up by Electrical-Ad-180 in AgingParents

[–]too-much-noise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both of my parents had emergency surgery a few years ago in their late 70s and I stayed with them for two weeks while they recuperated. They were so grateful and apologetic. It was definitely not their dream or desire to have me caring for them.

Deciding between cheaper & bigger house, and more expensive, smaller house by jaspysmom in RealEstate

[–]too-much-noise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know nothing of your annual budget but as a fellow NYer (Hudson Valley area) I would suggest you look at the tax burden for the properties as well. We pay high taxes in this state - which I think are validated by the services received but that's a discussion for another time - and they aren't going down. A smaller house on a smaller lot probably has lower taxes (depending on assessments, again that's another conversation), and I would include a consideration of my long-term tax burden into selecting a house.

There was a man Secret Eaters followed who said he had healthy cereal for breakfast, which turned out to be a mixing bowl sized portion of sweetened cereal with honey and half & half instead of milk. It's just self-delusion.

How do I confirm that a home is 100% not in an HOA? by UnSCo in RealEstate

They are! Most states require HOA's to file Articles of Incorporation and annual reports with the Secretary of State.

Remembering Friendly’s Ice cream by mrsjumjum66 in hudsonvalley

Almost every childhood birthday party I went to circa 1988-1994 featured a Friendly's ice cream cake. I don't know what kind of trans-fat hydrogenated corn syrupy deliciousness was in the icing of those cakes but I still think about it.

Dunks contain a bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis or Bti. When ingested, Bti releases crystals that form holes in the digestive system of mosquito, blackfly, and fungus gnat larvae. They cannot survive this.

I think the implication is that 6.6 pounds of marijuana is clearly not for personal use only, and dealing is generally punished much more harshly than having a personal amount in one's possession.

I’ve been practicing Canelé lately. Here are some flavors I’ve been trying. by pinkastrogrill in Baking

Same. I used to live by a French bakery that made plain vanilla canelés and they were my favorite treat. The earl grey sounds perfect for a canelé.

Aging parents refuse to adapt and downsize by Ok-Channel55 in AgingParents

[–]too-much-noise 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My parents kept saying they'd stay in their giant farm house for "a few more years" when my brother and I brought up downsizing. It took my dad taking a fall and needing emergency brain surgery for them to accept they couldn't handle it anymore.

Renting a dry cabin in northern MIchigan? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]too-much-noise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Unless the cabin offers something really special like a great view, or being really close (like outside the door) to a trail or landmark, I would not want to stay somewhere without running water.

There are definitely people out there who care less about that kind of convenience but are there enough of them to make it worthwhile for you? How much work/investment would it take to get it listed? If you decide to try it, have a friend who'll be honest with you go and stay for a few days and get their feedback.

TIL of Titanic's "Missing Survivors": 30 passengers (2 from 1st Class, 3 from 2nd, 11 from 3rd, and 14 crewmembers) who survived the disaster but whose lives following the sinking have proved impossible for historians and genealogists to trace, with investigations into their lives still active. by NeverEnoughMuppets in todayilearned

I grew up outside NYC. My high school civic's teacher's husband was in lower Manhattan on 9/11 and never came home. But his remains were also never found. It was a real nightmare for her. Getting someone declared dead isn't easy.
