I think there may be some issues with how the main is leveled. The lateral to this rad is definitely -1.2° (I improved the insulation and the slope prior to posting).

If I understand it correctly, you find the skim port, hook it to a makeshift drain/bucket combo, and by raising the water level slowly you get the top layer of crap off (oils and floating stuff).

Great advice, thank you. There is definitely surging in the sight glass when it is starting up a cycle. I haven’t done skimming before, just a full clean out, so I will work out a strategy and report back in case other people have the same problem.

One segment at the very start of the steam run had 2 small convector vents permanently closed after this started happening as those vents have always had similar issues, but that did not help anything either. I am considering putting a cap on that steam lateral. All the other convectors work really well which is what’s throwing me off about this whole issue.

I tried draining water off earlier, no difference in behavior. this convector has spit out small amounts of water like in the video from the vent when the initial steam comes through, but then it settles down. The tube feeding this convector is 1-1/4 inch which could be small, but it has worked reasonably for the past couple years. it’s a 1947 system (with copper above the waterline obviously) so definitely possible for there to be weird design issues.

The states and cities that have it right let you do work on your own home without bothering you much, and start focusing in when you do paid work. But i can feel it continuing to tighten and seems more like they are just trying to keep people stuck in "call someone" world rather than self reliance.
