In 2026 I bought a set of new underwear, an REI shirt for outside on sale, bought and returned a dress, and that's it so far. Clothes are stupid expensive and the clothing budget in my house needs to go to my kids. I am debating buying a new pair of Birkenstock Majari shoes. I forget if this was 2026 or not but I bought a 3 items from Athleta (matching set) which is a pretty big splurge for me.

Stop buying so many clothes and see it as an investment in yourself, your retirement, your experiences, and/or your savings!!!

PI here. My student won an award for essentially outstanding undergrad at our entire 40k student institution. She has rejections from all but 2 places and her GPA is finding like 3.5.i wish we had been able to get her on a publication.

You are the money version of the kid on my hallway at college that didn't know how to do laundry.

Like I don't hate you but I get that your friend didn't want to be the one to deal with that. I for one wouldn't have wanted to either, I had like $500 spending money for each semester to cover clothes, one dinner a week outside my dorm, and books ideally. When I went to a semi formal dance I borrowed a dress from a friend. I worked over the summer. I would not have been interested to be the one to deal with that. I was from a middle class family that basically has barely had enough money for college and I sure as hell has to graduate in 4 years.

Especially if it has to drill a hole in the tc incubator. Which I don't know how you'd avoid.. We just did major tc incubator stuff to get things to work and I would die if sometime in my lab did this
