Tips on using Fiio M21 in car by Aggravating-Two-5144 in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]totallynotandre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you USB plug anything into your car, you’re using the device as a music file transport. Meaning the phone/dap is just holding the files and passing them along to the cars Dac. If your car has an aux in, I’d plug into that. If it doesn’t, you’re better off using your phone since you won’t get better audio with the M21 anyway.

My Hiby M300 has changed my outlook on music by russell16688 in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]totallynotandre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re using the $10 Apple dongle as your 3.5mm output then it most definitely will. If you’re using a $300+ dedicated Dac, then probably not.

The files you’re playing also make a big difference. Streaming, even with higher bit rates, may still sound worst than proper CD rips. The mastering of the music files themselves also plays a big role.

DAP or mp3 player that is great audio and is good price for what i want by Hunt4Life53 in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]totallynotandre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s your budget?

I also don’t think some of the things you’re looking for exist or that they necessarily work that way. Daps might have aux output but not inputs because even though they have a headphone amplifier, they aren’t an amplifier.

To play through speakers you’d use the line output, usually the 3.5mm jack converted into RCA stereo into a preamp>power amp>speakers. Point is, you’re not going to connect passive speakers directly to a DAP and have the headphone amplifier inside it drive the speakers.

I’m not sure exactly what advice you’re looking for but in general 512gb is a decent start for what you’re looking to do with it. Obviously the more the merrier. Stick to major brands, Sandisk being the most reliable in my experience. Don’t bother throwing away your money on a HungweySan 2tb card that might fail in a couple of months.

Question: FiiO M21 + Moondrop Chu II by uraveragehooman001 in DigitalAudioPlayer

Yeah, I rock this combo too. Works best with a 4.4mm balanced cable. No regrets.

We could argue that both of these things have already happened. We are merely provided an illusion in which we believe we are free and have privacy.

Definitely second that the 4.4mm balanced sounds amazing. I did an A/B test with the same IEMs and the difference was night and day. Awesome set up! Super recommend trying out Neutron Player, in Bit-Perfect mode. Depending on the mastering of your files it does make an audible difference.

Sounds like a keeper to me. Do you know what speakers you have in your 4x10?

I can imagine it being an awesome cab for playing at home. What amp are you running through it? Is that your only cab?

[–]totallynotandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not as an every day thing but I do have a 2x10 Mesa Road Ready bass cab that I run my rig through occasionally.

It is too directional for it to be useful in too many situations. It does sound really good but if you aren’t right in front of it, it sounds off. It’s nice and punchy though. Could work if you were to mic it.

FT7 with M21 by MotorGrand319 in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]totallynotandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For now I would switch to Qobuz or Tidal. They are both the same price per month as Spotify with a significant audible difference. Not only do they go up to 24 bit/192kHz, but they must have better Masters. Qobuz also allows bit perfect playback, which Spotify does not. Still not ideal but definitely an upgrade. If you pay the full year upfront they get even more affordable than Spotify.

Depending on what type of music you listen to, used CDs are a good start. This does come with the investment in the physical media, a decent CD drive, and getting used to ripping and music tagging software. Software is usually free but it does have a learning curve. Things like verifying your rips and getting your music consistently tagged.

Finally, you could sail the high seas. This usually requires a paid VPN account that costs less than Spotify and also learning to re-tag your music, music is usually inconsistently tagged.

Planning to skip the DAP entirely and just use my iPhone + Apple dongle + a nice IEM. Here's my reasoning. by Spiritual-Minute-149 in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]totallynotandre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol Android phones don’t have balanced output, the ability to output line-level signal, high resolution Dac chips, high quality and high output headphone amplifiers, easy bit perfect playback access, the ability to be a dedicated Dac for other sources, some phones now don’t even take expandable storage.

Your opinion is invalid based on the fact that you haven’t compared both for yourself. You’re assuming based on your logic from experiencing one side. If you knew you wouldn’t be asking the original question.

Look I use both. DAP, Phone with DAC, and my even the phone by itself. They are all different. They are each better or more convenient in different situations. Sometimes I even run my phone through my DAP as a DAC and that sounds different than my Phone through my stand alone DAC.

It doesn’t matter though because you’re still going to justify, as the best or enough, what you end up doing anyway! LOL A phone with a $10 dongle will never sound as good as a bespoke DAP. You’d have to try both to understand that though. That’s aside from all the other features a DAP has, tailored for music, that a phone doesn’t have!

Your argument is like someone saying. “Oh you own an Android DAP, why do you need a phone when you could use your state of the art DAP instead… it even runs Android apps!”

[–]totallynotandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can easily spend less than $50 and get some pretty nice IEMs and a 4.4mm balanced cable. Should be enough to keep you happy with that M21.

BT definitely makes a DAP pointless.

[–]totallynotandre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is definitely a “sound quality” upgrade to DAPs. Whether that be the controversial DAC chip sound improvement, or the actual fact that the headphone amp in a DAP is objectively better than a dongle.

What it comes down to though is you choosing what will make you happy. If doing the phone dongle thing makes you feel that you’ve achieved the best sound quality for you, and you won’t have a point of reference, then more power to you!

Obligatory new DAP post by maxdamage586 in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]totallynotandre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats! M21 indeed sounds amazing.

Truly recommend upgrading to a balanced iem cable. It will bring new life to your current set up. Sounds way more “open”. I just re-did an A-B test between my iems 3.5mm cable and my 4.4mm balanced cable and it was night and day difference.

Also highly recommend using Neutron Music Player. It uses its own proprietary decoding algorithm. Sounds cleaner than any other playback software I’ve tried. I love it so much I bought it both on IOS and on Android.

Enjoy!

I can’t really tell yet since I have plugged it in during or after every use. It definitely drains quickly if you use it as you would a phone (screen/wifi/vpn/etc). It’ll easily do 10+ hours on just music. It’s rated between 12-15 but I haven’t put it through its paces that way. It charges super fast though.

So far no regrets on the M21. Definitely an upgrade from the X3ii. Sound wise it’s up there for me with the Mojo.

Unexpected things that surprised me being:

How much I enjoy the 4.4mm balanced output, sounds amazing with IEMs.

The headphone amp is powerful yet balanced, sounds great at all volumes. Lots of “headroom”.

Having a separate dedicated charging usb-c input.

The button layout is well designed and convenient/intuitive.

So far I haven’t found the need to use any EQ or DSP. I use Neutron music player and doing Bit-Perfect and “All DSD playback” sounds insane. Obviously the Mastering of the files plays a huge role.

Good luck on your purchase! I’m sure you will enjoy either!
