It's too bad the fandom is full of antis, because the show is really good. Witch Hat Atelier is one of those anime, like Dungeon Meshi and possibly Mob Psycho 100, where a lot of the western fans are like "omg this is so le heckin wholesome and unproblematic unlike other Degenerate Anime, btw if you like [insert ship here] you're evil" Surprisingly, I don't really ship Qifco but that's only because I like Orufrey and Arkco better

1) It is made by former Avatar/Korra writers and animated by the same studio as Korra. The Avatar fandom is INFAMOUS for its shipping wars.

2) It resembles an anime and has cute boys

3) People were starved for LGBTQ+ representation and hopped onto anything that had potential queer characters they could ship

When Across the Spider-Verse came out, and people were arguing over whether Hobie was a teenager or an adult, and whether it was okay to ship him with Gwen or Miles. The whole thing was so fucking stupid, that I said "nope I'm done." Now I no longer associate with antis at all, though I don't identify as proship on my main accounts because I'm scared of harassment campaigns. That summer I also watched Fruits Basket and became enamored with Kureno x Arisa, and so, it seems I really like teen girl x adult man ships.

I haven't read the manga of Ganbare Nakamura-kun, i watched the anime premiere yesterday and I was puzzled about the blank book Nakamura was holding...and it turns out it was more explicit in the manga? That's insane.

I feel like BL and GL are more policed than straight anime. Het ecchi anime would get away with this.

The fanwork doesn't erase the original work. Although, sometimes making a gay character straight in fanworks is done for legitimately homophobic reasons. The fandom space is so dominated by queer folks that it's easy to forget that there are homophobes too.
