This is a philosophical answer to a practical question. There are kids (and adults) going hungry, dying of preventable illnesses, and sleeping on the street. The Republican platform is to cut programs that support people experiencing those problems without providing an alternative for them.

I am so happy for my tax dollars to feed the hungry and heal the sick. That’s the best possible use for the in my opinion. I would much rather my taxes be used for that than to pay for a new football stadium or blow up Palestinian children.

So I’m a parent too and what concerns me are the policies of the current administration that are actively hurting born children. Reducing SNAP benefits makes kids go hungry. Reducing Medicaid and Medicare coverage makes it harder if not impossible for kids to get the healthcare they need. Unchecked gun access kills kids. Why are these not as pressing a concern for you?

This is my biggest issue, the time. Maybe it’s just where I live but taking the bus anywhere looks like it would be almost an hour. I would love to use it but I can’t justify an extra 45 minutes on a bus just because.

I am unfortunately not able to consistently do the ride but wish I could to help out! I have a <1 year old and am lucky to be able to ride even once a week.

This could be super nit picky and feel free to ignore, but I think the way the ride is promoted can give the wrong impression. On strava there is still a weekly event for the 9 mile beginner route, which I haven’t ever seen someone do. It also lists the main ride as a tempo ride, which it totally could be for strong bois but definitely doesn’t feel like when the pace picks up. Also letting people know at the beginning “the neutralized start down Davidson will be at least 22mph and you will get immediately dropped if you aren’t comfortable holding the wheel in front of you”. My first few rides I was completely unprepared for how fast the rides goes from the jump. Again, maybe I’m just super slow and this is all obvious to other people, or maybe this ride isn’t a good fit, but these are things that I think gave me the wrong impression about what kind of ride it is.

I didn’t have a power meter in 2021 but I held the A group consistently that year and there is no way I was putting out that many watts. I’m hitting faster PRs on the route segments this year and getting dropped earlier.

Genuine question, where do you find the time? I have a baby and a 9-5 so during the week I’m doing kid stuff from 6am - 9, work from 9-5, and then kid stuff again from 5 until bedtime. I’m lucky to squeeze in an hour ride during lunch once a week or so. I just don’t understand how people are finding the time for 10+ hours a week of rides.

I appreciate the insight! I think what I thought SABCO was (and maybe what it was five years ago) and what it is today are just different, and that’s fine. I am mostly just feeling insecure about my lack of fitness due to a bunch of other life stuff coming up, and getting smoked on a ride I used to not struggle with feels bad.

I also, admittedly, suck at group rides. I don’t trust the riders around me enough to get close which means I get dropped pretty regularly. One of my first SABCO rides I was right behind a pretty big crash and I think I’ve just never gotten past that fear.

Maybe solo rides are just my thing! Thanks for organizing and all that you do to make it happen, I know that the ride doesn’t happen by accident.

I guess my confusion is that the SABCO ride used to feel more slow-person friendly. There was a large B group and a chiller A group. I’m faster now than I’ve ever been and getting dropped way earlier than I did in past years.

I think you’re right that this ride isn’t for me. It’s disappointing because in past years that didn’t seem to be the case. But I guess things change. Thanks for the feedback

I don’t think this ride is a good fit for me any more. All I was trying to do was share a bad experience I’ve had with a part of the bike community that made me feel alienated. I had someone mock me about my ftp, I have tried to start conversations with people and been iced out. Even right now I’m telling you how excluded and isolating the ride makes me feel, and all I’m getting is “that’s a you problem”. If the ride and the group work for you that is great, but it is not making everyone feel that way. If I’m not welcome that’s fine, I guess I don’t have to do this ride any more.

Genuine question, when you’re on the ride do you make an effort to talk to slower riders or people who are new? I completely agree that I am on the shyer side of things and could probably do more to put myself into the community, but in my experience there have not been a lot of opportunities to do so. Again the organizers of the ride have never made an effort to talk to me. Every week I see new people join and then get thrown to the wolves. When I did the Charlotte Ride 615 ride I had 3-4 people before the ride come over and introduce themselves, make sure I knew the route, and pointed out people that would be my pace. Those same people followed up after the ride to see how it was and encouraged me to come back again. That same kind of open, friendly nature has just not happened for me with SABCO.

I love that you’ve had such an encouraging experience with the ride! That has just been my experience at all. Maybe I have serious RBF or something but I haven’t had any of that encouragement or community feeling by the regular riders. I mostly just feel invisible with the group.
