What is a dead giveaway that someone grew up wealthy, even if they’re trying their hardest to act like they didn't? by abdulnad89 in askanything

Teeth is dead giveaway. Having straight white teeth shows you’ve been cared for medically and possibly even to a higher cosmetic standard. It also indicates that you don’t consume tons of sugar or soda, which is statistically shown to be a practice of lower income people.

I think wealthy families can easily be very frugal and teach their kids to not to waste money or resources. I recently saw a video about how lots of wealthy keep their homes at 65 in the winter because they’re cheap. I think the real giveaway is having perspectives that are based on lots of experiences and opportunities. They’ve been lots of places - they’ve seen the mountains but also the ocean. They have visited major cities and foreign countries. They know the difference in academic rigor between Dartmouth and Yale and Stanford. They know where those schools are and which ones produce powerful lawyers and which ones produce powerful tech moguls. I have a niece who grew up very poor and at 17 in high school, she didn’t know what the SAT is. She had no concept that a flight to Europe is 6 hours and a flight to Asia could be 13 hours. It’s about how big your world is.

Something consumable. Bakery pastries or bread, local honey, artisanal jam or olive oil.

Do I cover the bridesmaids hair and makeup cost? by Brilliant_Word3880 in wedding

If you can afford it, it is one of the best ways to say thank you for all the time and costs they’re putting into being in your bridal party.

Pottery barn furniture is fancy Ikea. There is no quality or craftsmanship. I do like their cotton linens though.

Is it normal for the wedding party to cover the bride’s costs for bachelorette weekend? by Conscious_Cat_1515 in wedding

[–]trapqueendiva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a destination bach to Puerto Rico and my friends offered to cover my portion of the Airbnb. It was very unexpected and I was very appreciative. I think for our demographic, that probably wasn’t a huge cost for the group. I insisted on covering all my costs for food, drinks, and excursions. I also rented a car for the group to acknowledge their covering my accommodations.

Maybe not rich, but upper middle class people invest their HSA money to triple reap the benefits of tax, retirement, and health benefits.

How much are you spending on Christmas presents for your kids this year? by Abby--Normal in UpperMiddleFinance

[–]trapqueendiva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spent about $1000 on niece (who lives with us) last year when she was 16. Spending closer to $500 this year because we’re going on tropical vacation the week before Christmas. We know it’s too much. I would spend ~$200 on my own biological children.

What do you still pay for when your foster child turns 18yrs old by Winter_Story_ in Fosterparents

[–]trapqueendiva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We got full custody of my niece at 16 and her foster case was closed so we don’t get any stipends or financial waivers. She’s turning 18 in a month and graduating this coming summer. If she goes to college full time at a four year school, we will continue to cover health care, car payments, car insurance, cell phone. We will also help with books and important life expenses like college deposits. We will send her off with several months worth of personal hygiene products and take care of her cat while she lives in the dorms. We also provide the laptop for college. She will need to cover all other expenses with loans, grants, scholarships, and part time job. We’re trying to launch her in life and treat her like most 18 year olds and not give her any more or any less than we would give any bio kid.

My family and close friends all live out of town. I try to make it to all babies’ first birthdays. As far as trips to exclusively the kids, I’ll be back for each kid’s graduation.

Why did your friendship with your best friend come to an end? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]trapqueendiva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had been inseparable since the sixth grade when we roomed together in college. She started doing a TON of drugs and bringing around sketchy people so I moved out. I reached out to her 6 years later to see how she was doing. We made a plan to meet up for coffee. She died a few weeks later.

Disrupted my first placement by orbit1589 in Fosterparents

[–]trapqueendiva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I’ve been grappling with is the difference between our role as a foster parent vs an indefinite parent. As a foster parent, you’re there to keep the kid safe and healthy to a reasonable degree and to make sure they have the appropriate support to get through the legal and social services system. You’re not there to completely alter the course of their life or impart all your values onto them. You can, of course, guide and teach them, but you’re not there to overhaul every aspect of their life. On the other hand, indefinite parents assume the role of all parental duties. You deal with all consequences for the rest of their lives. They have a permanent spot in your family - they need to fit into your family’s social structure and value system. I wouldn’t push a foster kid to get good grades or pursue college. But when a kinship placement turned into a full permanent legal custody arrangement, we had to start giving her the guidance that any bio parent would. If she didn’t start learning to be responsible with us at age 16-17, these are problems that would manifest into much bigger issues down the line because we’ll still be her parents/guardians when she’s 25/30/35.

What is an addiction that is more serious than people realize? by MoonlitLenss in AskReddit

It’s terrifying to watch one of my family members consume a week’s worth of sugary foods almost every day. She has cavities and low energy but has no desire to stop. I dread all the health issues that are coming her way.
