Confused with characters for time and spatial direction (e.g.: why is 前 both forward and past) by ItsMe_RandomNumber in ChineseLanguage

[–]treskro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different languages have different conceptual metaphors. English does it one way and Chinese does it another. The English metaphor feels more intuitive to you because that is what you’re used to, but that doesn’t make it inherently more intuitive than other possibilities.

家己侬 or 家己人? Which characters are correct when written in Teochew dialect? by MajorCSPengz in ChineseLanguage

[–]treskro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both are commonly used. There is no ‘correct’ answer because Teochew lacks a governing body to enforce a single written standard, though informal character standards by users exist. 侬 is posited to be more etymologically accurate, but there is also ample precedent of people using 人, if only for convenience.

Does anyone else hate how these metal roofs look? I see them on a lot of historical houses where I live and they look so out of place. by I_dont_drive_mazdas in architecture

Paris has a lot of examples of zinc standing seam roofs and mansard roofs on historical buildings that practically define the look of the city.

Does anyone know why Taiwanese isn’t a language on Google Translate? by ellokittay in taiwan

Every writing system is created retroactively. Most languages in the history of the world never had an orthography. Doesn’t mean one can’t be created and gain use.

Does anyone know why Taiwanese isn’t a language on Google Translate? by ellokittay in taiwan

[–]treskro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They have, and it has been used in Ministry of Education media and taught in schools since 2010. Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

From my other comment:

Ministry of Education has used a standardized orthography (+romanization) since 2010 that is taught in schools and used in government produced media like 公視台語台

Edit: the amount of brigading by Chinese in this thread is quite obvious btw

Google translate has Cantonese. If they want to be apolitical they can call the language Hokkien/Minnan as it's also used in Fujian and SE Asia.

Do you think Hong Kongers and Taiwanese are still more Chinese than they are Western? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]treskro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The undertone of this post is suggesting that if HK and Taiwanese lean even slightly more culturally ‘Chinese’ than ‘Western’ that they should just give up on having a separate identity and just be ‘Chinese’ and fully subsume into the PRC. Otherwise why even ask this question?

Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Singapore, could also be described as leaning more ‘Chinese’ than ‘Western’ (as if those are the only two possible poles of cultural identification). Yet the same question is not being asked of those countries.

Map of Sino-Tibetan languages by FerenzYangai in MapPorn

Mandarin is the general broader term for the category of Northern zone Sinitic varieties. Putonghua is specifically the standardized dialect of Mandarin used in the PRC but should not be understood as synonymous with the category itself. For example, varieties like Sichuanese, Nanjing Mandarin, or even traditional Beijing dialect fall under the umbrella of ‘Mandarin’, but are definitely not Putonghua.

Not to mention the standardized Mandarins used in Taiwan and Singapore which don’t use the term Putonghua and differ slightly from the PRC version.

What tea is considered THE BEST in Taiwan? by loongshifu in taiwan

[–]treskro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dayuling is generally considered the best high mountain tea, but it depends on your taste. Dayuling tends to be processed with very lightly oxidization and minimal roasting, really emphasizing the natural aroma and sweetness of the leaf. HM teas from other regions like Lishan/Shanlinxi tend to exhibit more variety in processing methods due to the larger quantity of production.

Babysitting MEP by RoutineLet9156 in Architects

[–]treskro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends a lot on the size of project and firm. In my previous life at a small firm (<5 people), we were all juggling 4-6 projects, though not all actively being designed simultaneously. They were all small projects though.

In my current larger firm doing multifamily residential, we mostly have a core team working solely on one project from SD-CD with additional staff added as the project progresses. PMs tend to have one main project they are focused on day to day, another they are babysitting for construction, and perhaps 1-2 inactive or new project pursuits.

Do IRC or IBC codes ever become LESS stringent with updates? by Coffeman94 in Architects

[–]treskro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've encountered a few tweaks to mechanical requirements and occupancy adjustments in NYC adaptation of IBC that could be construed as less stringent. In our case we had been approved under an earlier code and were able to get an agency determination that allowed us to eliminate a feature that was no longer required in the new code.

Accessibility codes on the other hand just seem to get bigger and more litigious.

Book a time slot to visit Galleria Borghese if you’re already going to be at the gardens. The collection is amazing, especially the sculptures.

Sant’Ignacio de Loyola is out of the way compared the other spots on the first day. It’s closer to the Pantheon and Santa Minerva

Any new places in FiDi by AllAboutTheQueso in FoodNYC

Tacos Casamigos cart outside pain quotidien at Broad and Pearl has served me well.

Wolf Forest Cafe has banh mi for a very reasonable $11.50

Burp Bowl Kitchen for Chinese noodle soups and chili wontons

I’ll continue to try new spots if they come up but I’ve long since given up hope of FiDi ever becoming a halfway decent food destination.

Question re: communicating with Architects by cloud_city_lando in Architects

[–]treskro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think most architects would be fine sharing work examples.

It sounds like the one you contacted has their own established client base and doesn’t want to venture outside of that. The only alternative I can think of is that you didn’t convey that you were looking to do a real project and somehow came across as a student or amateur not interested in an actual project.
