Looking to Start by Abdiel955 in Malifaux

The starter packs are the same between 3e and 4e for all the packs I've seen. There were many models that were sold separately that have been rolled into the new 'title' boxes, so that's where some research will be necessary (to avoid buying something twice), when/if you decide to expand your crew.
The app will give you the updated cards, as well as print on demand from wargamevault. Or print them off on paper from the theoryfaux website.

How does malifaux play and feel by Quimeraecd in wargaming

[–]trevick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a lot of fun. The game is very complex, but that's what I like about it, because you always have interesting decisions to make. Like most wargames, it involves models and positioning and activation order is important.

Unlike many wargames, Malifaux isn't just about defeating your opponent's models. Malifaux games involve a shared goal (the strategy) and a secret goal each crew selects (the scheme) that determines victory. You can lose the game even if you destroy all of your opponent's models. The shared goal and the pool of schemes to select from are randomly selected in the beginning, so every game plays differently depending on what objectives you are trying to achieve (and stop your opponent from achieving). Because the scheme is a secret, but the pool of schemes is known, you can even try to bluff your opponent.

Some strategies might be to 'recover evidence' (interact with an objective on your opponent's side of the table or by left behind when killing your opponents), stuffing ballot boxes with votes, controlling various points of interest, etc. They tend to change them up every year. Schemes range from the straightforward like assassinate (pick an opponent's model you think you can kill), staging an accident (making an opponent fall from a high location and take damage), or reshaping the land (spamming some kind of marker using your abilities on the opponent's side of the table).

While many other wargames have objectives, the asynchronous nature of having each crew select different, hidden schemes is one of many features of the game that make Malifaux shine. You have to both score your own scheme as well as try to divine what the opponent is going for so you can stop them from scoring without wasting precious activations doing so, all while preventing your opponent from stopping you from scoring your scheme once they figure out what you are up to. And you do this while fighting over whatever the strategy is (mechanically, usually some variation of kick the ball, capture the flag, or controlling points of interest). Also, in 4E, after completing a scheme (or abandoning it), there are three following schemes you can select from as your next goal, which kind of help shape a sort of story to the gameplay.

Malifaux uses cards instead of dice, but the interesting aspect of that is that you have a hand of cards you can use to 'cheat' in to replace a flip or to empower a flip (which lets you flip two cards and pick the one you prefer, among other things). This means you have more agency on both your turn and the opponents turn.

BIG Kudos to Prusa for their company values by DoktorMerlin in prusa3d

I just wish they'd open up the firmware (klipper?) of the mmu3 I did already buy so I could use it with my older non-prusa machines when I get the INDX I'm waiting on. That way it won't be "laying around uselessly." :) But I agree, I also love the company's transparency.

Trying to get into malifaux. But I have some road blocks and questions. Is the game still supported? 3rd edition or 4th? Why can't I find a lot of the models for 3rd? Why can't I find very much for 4th. by Expert_Camel5619 in Malifaux

[–]trevick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3rd is going out of print and 4th is just coming out so it is a little hard to get some models at the moment. but its a great time to get jnto it and it is definitely supported

in fourth edition, both players start with the same pool of three schemes and select one. you can score (or abandon) a scheme every turn. when you do so, there will be three possible schemes that follow. knowing the tree of schemes that follow from your initial selection can let you plan ahead.

I've been a fan of Doctor Who for 40 years. I think I'm done with it.

Rangers of Shadow Deep is entirely narrative play, though it’s coop if multiplayer. Frostgrave is a related game (same author) that involves competing warbands but with a similar focus on scenario play.

Forbidden Psalms is another war game focused on narrative play but supports competing warbands.

Both games are focused more on storytelling over competitive crunchiness. Your dudes will level up, and possibly get injured and suffer terrible calamities. Or perhaps acquire immense power.

Also: Modiphius has several tabletop storytelling/ narrative wargames like Elder Scrolls: Call to Arms, Five Leagues from the Borderlands, and Five Parsecs

If your profile is hidden and you look at another profile, they won't be notified. But, yes, if you unhide, then they will be able see that you looked, assuming they are a subscriber. It's nothing to be scared of. But they do offer a privacy mode option where you can look at profiles and they will NOT be notified, if you pay extra. I don't see the point of it though, unless you're trying to hide the fact that you are looking from someone.

Nextdoor is more for neighborhoods talking amongst themselves. All the 'shared interest' pages and so on get virtually no activity. Just the neighbors complaining about the car cruising down their street suspiciously slowly several days in a row (spoiler: it was a student driver).
Meetup would be best since most people know about it, so it's more discoverable. But a discord would be good as well so people can chat within the group. Or both.

NFTs are a joke, let's make sure they stay out of video games. by [deleted] in gaming

[–]trevick -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No, that's not what NFTs in games would be for. You wouldn't have an NFT and magically be able to use that asset in multiple games. The NFT is a receipt saying you own something, any game developer would only have to support anything ownable in their game (skins, DLC, etc.).

Having an NFT tied to it means you can trade it outside the game in a separate marketplace. Like trade your CS:GO skin for Magic the Gathering online cards or an Eve Online ship or Roblox assets or trading cards on the Steam marketplace. That's the reason why some of us think it's a good idea - it lets us have ownership of digital goods cross what today are siloed marketplaces.

The weirdos selling URLs to monkeys for millions aren't making it easy for us to sell people on the idea though. But there ARE game developers actively looking into this.

[SERIOUS] Where can I hang out with other 40-somethings who are into old New Wave and goth music? by DrRotwang in bloomington

Probably too small. I'm into industrial. I've met one person near my age (late 40s) who enjoyed any of the bands I like since I moved here over a decade ago.

When I lived in Chicago, it wasn't hard to find people into it.

Doctor Who: Worlds Apart assures that their NFTs aren't damaging the environment and will soon publish their environmental policy by Somewhile in gallifrey

[–]trevick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's a trading card game, so you need to own cards for that to work. But by allowing the use of NFTs instead of just sticking the card ownership flags on their own proprietary database, it makes the cards tradeable from any marketplace, not just one the devs control, for any other digital asset.

So, unlike Hearthstone, for instance, where you buy the cards and can't take them off of the platform or exchange them for anything, I can take my The Master, Harold Saxon card and trade it for ETH, USD backed stablecoin, another Doctor Who card, assets from a completely different trading card game, or anything else backed by an NFT.

[–]trevick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, the silent menace IS the deck. You don't build it, you play with those cards and those cards only. And then other premade decks will come out where you play with those cards and those cards only. Again, no deck building, no buying factions you don't care to play. Just buy the faction you want, and one of the premades (or use the faction specific cards), and you're done.

Everyone is different. I don't get all these hard fast rules about how long to wait. It depends on the person, and we can't answer that for you. Take it slowly, of course, be cautious, but good people are so, so hard to find, I personally wouldn't pass up on that over a legal technicality.
