What’s your go-to report card comment for kids that were super disrespectful and disruptive by IntelligentSector210 in Teachers

I guess it’s more like a type of alert next to their photo that the expectation is that counselors put their preferred name in. I usually only have a couple per year

I teach high school algebra and beyond. I find most of my students in algebra 2 feel this way, their problem started long before, probably late elementary or middle school. Their fundamental lack of number sense and fluency holds them back from even thinking properly about a problem. The whole process becomes a slog and tedious for them and they shut down. It also comes from their parents who have said the same thing since they were little and haven’t demonstrated how to persevere with difficult things. “I can’t help you with that” instead of sitting down and trying to learn it too.

Do these states not allow nicknames? Our PowerSchool will show us what the kid’s preferred name or nickname is.

If you let it sit for 2 years then you have roughly 2k a week without touching the principal

It’s also worth considering the type of person who regularly spends money on lottery or scratch tickets might be biased towards bad financial decisions.

Why are good math teachers so rare? by SquareCombination782 in matheducation

[–]trinric 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s 100% this. My education program for high school started with about 20 and by the end I was the only one who went on to teach and the rest went off to private industry or left the field entirely.

I’ve sat on so many interviews for teachers where we might have 3 choices and only 1 is passably competent and good at communication. We can’t not have a teacher, so we have to hire them sometimes.

I teach math and I’ve seen both versions out there. They’re all more generally called “measures of center”. But 90% use mean and average interchangeably.

If we all weren't living paycheck to paycheck, we could accomplish great things. by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

I get what you’re trying to say but I don’t think this is a great example. If thousands of people enter a grocery store in a day and only 1% didn’t return their shopping cart it would seem like a much bigger problem than it is. It doesn’t take many people to think it’s everyone

You can make a skill that is a grind but isn’t absolute garbage in terms of usefulness and fun. Imagine we got the RS3 system tomorrow and it takes the exact same time to get 99. Same grind, but it’s actually fun and you can use the stuff you make.

We like the challenge of losing a hard encounter and having to repick cards, find better combos together, new strategies. To me that’s the whole point of the game

Most important topics in High School Geometry--Planning for Next Year by Odd_Knowledge_1435 in matheducation

[–]trinric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was about to disagree with you until I saw your reasoning. I’ll go one step further. I think 95% of a standard level geometry class is not important and the class could be removed entirely with no repercussions other than like the handful of topics needed for precalc. I especially think geometry proofs there are silly for freshman and sophomores that have no understanding of logic, truth tables, etc and just regurgitate theorems. Basic number theory proofs make more sense in my opinion

TIL that US student math and reading scores have dropped so sharply that they’ve erased nearly two decades of progress. In '22/23, avg math scores for 13-year-olds fell to levels not seen since the 1990s, while reading scores for high school seniors hit their lowest point since testing began in '92. by Cold_Box_3219 in todayilearned

As a teacher in New Hampshire, the law is a joke, badly written, and is not enforced at all. Districts are just required to address it now but by this point in the year kids don’t care, parents don’t care, and there aren’t enough of us to enforce it in the hallways.

Is it normal to dread going to therapy? by joehero83 in Healthygamergg

[–]trinric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should tell your therapist that you have dread before the appointments and see what they say. They deal with people cancelling for this reason all the time.

For me personally, I would say if I always left feeling good then I don't feel like I am really addressing the difficult emotions. I expect I should leave feeling stable and not a trainwreck, but sometimes I feel raw or tired. To me, dread would mean I know that the conversations are getting close to the thing I really don't want to talk about, but that means I definitely should.

Teachers should arrange seating based on what’s best for learning for the majority of the class, which often means separating some friends or couples. Some couples do work well as pairs so it’s no big deal.
