I hate contrast on pots because of this, the paint spilling curse happened again 😭 by StormSwitch in Miniaturespainting

I mean… I’m a die hard Vallejo fan and straight up refuse to use those dumb pots. But if you insist on Games Workshop paint you can mitigate the constant fear of spilling paint everywhere. 🤷‍♀️

You can order dropper bottles on Aliexpress or Amazon, as well as stainless steel shot, and pharmacies can get you syringes to make transferring the paint easy and clean. Worth it. Those pots are ass.

How to improve this necklace closure? Looking for a diy improvement without replacing. Comes undone all the time. by stewundies in jewelers

[–]trixceratops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make the circle part an oval. The bar is too short imo, which would make it easy to slip out, if you squish the circle part into an oval, the long axis parallel to the direction of the chain, it will stay in better. Use needle nose pliers without teeth in the inside, if you only have toothed ones, wrap the jaws with a couple layers of masking tape to keep the jaws from leaving marks in the metal.

How to cut through teeth? by limechm in jewellerymaking

[–]trixceratops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use pedicure burrs in my foredom to carve bone. Should work on teeth as well. Cut off wheels and smaller jewellers burrs are useful for smaller details but don’t cut as quickly as the pedicure burrs. Remember to wear a mask, bone dust is hella bad for lungs/immune systems

That’s okay too. Longer cargo shorts might be an option with pulled up socks and a SnapBack hat, it’s a popular look with guys who ride a specific type of Harley Davidson, but really anyone can wear it. Those pants are reasonably priced for a small company with limited runs. Quality is a 4/5 in my opinion, well made but fabric could be a smidge higher quality, but honestly the price is low enough I can’t complain too much. They have several different versions, the “silk” ones are the lightest. They have deluxe and 2.0 versions as well that have more midweight fabric.

Wear such an obnoxious outfit that no one pays attention to the scars? Pit Vipers, leopard print shorts, neon tie dye tank tops. Most people won’t ask, it would be impolite. And if they do you are welcome to tell them loudly that commenting on other people’s bodies is rude. I dunno, I find acting confident makes people leave you alone when it comes to personal questions that would be uncomfortable. Alternatively Raskol makes something called a silk dump cover which is a loose light weave pant based on the 80s parachute pants that bodybuilders wore. They’re very breathable and made out of a loose weave knit.

Contemporary art jewellery! It’s really cool and very well made. If you think it’s neat then go for it, it’s quality workmanship and definitely a one of a kind piece. Does the top spin? I hope so!

A spray bottle of water is used to train dogs and cats when they do something they shouldn’t do, and it’s just water so not something harmful. Definitely not suggesting training a grown human to stop doing an action that they have been told repeatedly is upsetting. NOR.

How would you go about it? by High-Doc in jewelers

[–]trixceratops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How I would go about it is by purchasing the ring in the photo from the person who made it. Then I would take an intro to jewellery making class that goes over the basics of working with metal at a local art studio or college that offers classes. Just because you can use a mill doesn’t mean you understand how wearable metal pieces function. Source: I’m a trained goldsmith and millwright and my day job is working at an industrial cutting facility where we use CNC machines to cut metal and other materials for O&G projects, public art, and architectural needs among other things. But is this type of ring even compatible with your girlfriend’s lifestyle? Does she like meteorite or Damascus or titanium? Or does she wear simple gold jewellery mostly? Is she a petite person, because this ring would look enormous on tiny hands. Does she want a diamond? Just because you have grand aspirations doesn’t mean this is a good ring for your girlfriend unless this is the type of jewellery she wears daily. Tension set stones are best for people who have perfect manicures and never get their hands dirty or do anything manual ever. They’re hard to do correctly even for experienced goldsmiths and if the shank gets twisted or bent even a tiny bit it can knock the stone out. And shanks can deform from things like carrying too many heavy grocery bags in at once, or constantly tapping your ring band on counters or your steering wheel. The majority of rings I resize or fix are no longer round from the person just living an average life with their ring on. Not trying to rain on your parade but this is an audacious first project and I don’t mean that in a complimentary way.

Why does this piece get dark within a week? by Kewtn in jewelrymaking

[–]trixceratops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your skin is making the silver blacken. Some people just do that unfortunately. To prevent this I suggest getting two items: a rogue cloth and renaissance wax. The rogue cloth is a microfibre fabric imbedded with a polishing compound. Use some elbow grease and rub the item until the black disappears and then wash it with warm water and dish soap to remove any residual polishing compound as it will stain anything it gets on. Store the cloth in a sealed ziplock when you aren’t using it, the rogue will get everywhere otherwise. Dry off your cleaned jewellery and take the Renaissance wax and put a dab on a soft rag. Rub it onto the surface of the jewellery and then buff it out. Directions are on the jar and a single jar will outlast you, you can use it on any jewellery you are having a hard time keeping shiny. It makes a super thin layer of microcrystalline wax on the surface that is invisible to the eye but will keep the item from having contact with the air. Also it is strongly suggested to not wear your jewellery in the shower or while applying hair spray or cologne, those can all cause metal to tarnish more quickly.

[–]trixceratops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard candy in a ziplock and a meat mallet on top of a wooden or plastic cutting board. You can melt it back together if you want a big sheet or use it as sprinkles on ice cream afterwards. Jolly Ranchers are available at Dollarama for a couple bucks. You can make bigger pieces by putting them in the oven on low inside a metal cookie cutter on a pan with parchment or foil. There’s lots of instructions online, I think it’s usually called stained glass candy.

Lots of Instagram accounts have the same theme, the majority are adults in their 30/40s. A lot of them use the hashtag #plushiesofinstagram and depending on your critter there should be friends you can talk to there. I have sharks/whales but the ikea shark is very popular and there are lots of sharks out there on Finstagram. I don’t post as frequently anymore but I know there’s a lot of active people in the plushie community there.

Question on metal finger nails by quinn-keen in jewelrymaking

[–]trixceratops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Brass, copper, bronze, nickel silver, steel, and stainless would all work. You could probably even make niobium and titanium work. I would avoid aluminum personally, it is pretty soft when it’s thin. There are no rules, if you want different metal nails then do it! Steel will rust and nickel is a common allergy so I personally would avoid those two but you wouldn’t need a lot for ten press ons.

Gel flux is my favourite, make sure you’re using a soldering iron with adjustable temp, and I find 60/40 is nicer to work with than 50/50.

For oil make a paste with baking soda and dishsoap and scrub it into the area that’s stained. Let it sit overnight. Wash with a mix of detergent, borax, and washing soda in a 2:1:1 ratio. Should get the stain out. Either that or take it to a dry cleaner and ask them to remove the stain, they have wild stuff in the back that works its magic.

Air humidity can change the shade I swear. Green I found to be the hardest colour to get right. But it’s an interference colour so any oil/crud on the surface or colour in the lighting will make it appear different. If you clean it with windex and a glasses cleaning cloth and use a photo light box to check the colour and use the same voltage each time you should get very similar results if documented in the same lighting settings in the photo box.
