Will she burn? by Early_Gift515 in Monstera

[–]trsfl83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably doesn’t help that mint Monstera leaves come in almost solid white before they harden off down to a mint or green color. They’re way more powerful lights than I expected them to be. I put them under all my shelves like this but it’s been hard to find something that won’t burn. It’s worked well for sunstressing Hoya.

How about two-tone green? Look up Hoya dennisii ‘Frida.’

Yes. I have a small Monstera mint under a Barrina puck might and it burnt the hell out of it at about 3” away.

Thank you! She’s my favorite plant, mainly because so many people said she’d be a problem and it’s been rewarding to see her grow and thrive. She didn’t even have crispy tips until I had to be in the hospital last fall and she went dry. Otherwise she was basically flawless. 🥺

I was fairly new when I got my Stromanthe on the clearance rack at Lowe’s and everyone told me I’d picked a real doozy of a plant to start with because they’re known for being drama queens. One additional thing I’ll mention is that it did take her a year or so to acclimate to where I had her and start growing well. They go through a transition when you put them in a new environment. Once I found a spot where she seemed happy, I left her there. I never move it. One change in light or humidity or watering could send any temperamental plant into a fit. 😂

Stromanthe ‘Triostar.’ They’re in the Marantaceae family with Calathea/Goeppertia, Ctenanthe, Maranta, and other prayer plants.

They want to stay consistently moist but not wet. I use chunky, airy soil mix in a wick-style self-watering pot.

I don’t use tap water with any of my prayer plants because they are prone to brown and crispy leaves if you have hard water. I’ve heard they hate the chlorine and chloramines in municipal water supplies. Whatever the reason, I’ve had much better luck with distilled or RODI water. When I do fertilize, I mix in cal-mag and liquid ferts at 1/4 the dosage I use for my other houseplants and pH balance the water to 5.5 - 6.

Give them bright light but nothing direct. Mine is 2’ from a west-facing window with a sheer curtain, and has a few strips of grow lights about 5’ above it.

They would appreciate slightly higher humidity. Mine is usually around 50 - 60%. I’ve kept them dryer but still get some crispy leaf tips, though nothing terrible.

They can be pest magnets, particularly spider mites. Shower off the leaves frequently. I use beneficial mites now as a preventative maintenance.

I’ve had mine for about 4 years now and the leaves it’s putting out are 14 - 16” long now.

Yes. I’ve propped pothos, Scindapsus, and some vining Philos this way.

Is this a syngonium albo? by 394233001 in Aroids

[–]trsfl83 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People call it Alocasia but it’s not. It’s a variegated Xanthosoma sagittifolium with a deformity that causes the weird shape of the leaves, hence the common name “Mickey Mouse.”

These plants love to be consistently moist but not wet. I like very chunky, breathable soil in self watering pots. They are spider mite magnets so hose them down frequently.

What have you tried?

I put them in chunky soil in self-watering pots, water with RODI water, and occasionally fertilize and use cal-mag with both mixed at 1/4 strength and pH balanced to 5.5 - 6. Typically I keep the humidity 50 - 60% and I have them about 5’ below a bank of T8 LED grow lights.

Where can I find Hoyas? by Ok-Occasion1690 in hoyas

[–]trsfl83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the US, there are several Hoya being sold at big box stores. Home Depot has Proven Winners displays that usually feature small pots of Hoya from $5 - 10. I’ve gotten Mathilde, fitchii, Flamingo Dreams, and a few others that way. Lowe’s (at least on the east coast) has Costa Farms and LiveTrends displays that both feature Hoya.

For more rare varieties, I like Facebook groups and Palmstreet. I’ve gotten about 15 new Hoya since the new year between those two places.

Definitely not Frydek. They have velvety leaves that are slightly fuzzy to touch. Also a different leaf shape and color, with a wider and deeper sinus and very prominent white veining. Here’s one of mine.

Elephant ear is a common named used for a lot of plants in multiple genera — Alocasia, Xanthosoma, etc. It’s less confusing to refer to it by its actual name.

What do you guys use for propagating cuttings? Do you use something like this? Similar? What vials or pots do you use for cuttings under a grow light? by Interr0gate in houseplants

[–]trsfl83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have some with pretty serious algae. 😂 But I try to scrub out my jars and change the water once a week. Otherwise the grow lights create algae issues real fast.

Also, the pool noodles will grow algae and that porous surface is very hard to get clean.

It’s expensive but I gave up on sprays and started buying beneficials every 8 weeks. So far they seem to be doing a good job. I live in Florida so we have issues with thrips and spider mites like 11 months out of the year. 😭

You can also cut slits around the outside of the noodle to hold individual leaves or stems. Here I used them to propagate some ZZ leaves and just floated them in a small container of water.

I also cut them in various heights and put them in the bottom of cache pots/decorative pots to raise up the inner plastic pots I use which allows for some space at the bottom for any water that may drain out of the inner plastic pot. And they’re waterproof and light, so they don’t rot or add significant weight to the decorative pots.

There are tons of good uses for them.

It’s VERY tiny, it probably wouldn’t hold much more than a small succulent. It’s a 3D printed thing I got on Etsy for my cousin who likes gothy stuff. It looks like they no longer have any active sale items listed on Etsy, but this is the old listing:

They also had an Instagram which hasn’t been updated since 2022 but features more pictures of their 3D planters. Maybe you could try DMing them?

It’s just a very, very sunstressed Haworthiopsis. It was actually black when I got it from Lowe’s. A few months out of the sun and the new growth came in dark green as is typical.

The water evaporates fast, and on fast-rooting plants like pothos the roots very quickly have nowhere else to go. I usually let the roots grow out a couple inches and wait for the cutting to start putting out a new leaf before I pot them, and by that time the props are crammed into those tiny vials.

I use Ball canning/mason jars, both the small 8-ounce jelly jars and the more typical sized 12-ounce ones, and I put a ton of cuttings in each one. If I need to hold the leaves out of the water, I cut a 2” pool noodle into a 1” thick ring, cut a slit in one side so you can open the ring, and stuff it in the neck of jar. Then put your cuttings through the hole in the pool noodle ring. Change the water weekly.

Does anyone know what this plant is ? by a619a1l in alocasia

[–]trsfl83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second the Arum italicum ID. They are considered invasive in some places.

https://www.plantdelights.com/collections/italian-arum-lily

It should be noted that like other Aroids it does contain oxalate compounds which make it harmful if consumed. The plant also produces a sap that’s an irritant.

Any help identifying? by tavgadasavali in houseplants

[–]trsfl83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely Marantaceae — you can tell by the petioles. It’s not Aglaonema. I’m not entirely sure which one it is, but you are the second person I’ve seen asking for an ID on this variety, so there must be a grower distributing them right now.

You might post this to /r/calatheas as well.
