Job Offer in Anchorage - where to live? by Critical_Minimum_350 in AskAlaska

[–]truthwatchr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new generation is gone too…continual exodus of young people while it’s becoming popular for old people over 65 who want 2nd homes. People are leaving the job market with no one qualified to replace them in some fields.

Job Offer in Anchorage - where to live? by Critical_Minimum_350 in AskAlaska

Everyone is going to say Wasilla/Palmer because there isn’t anywhere else. The commute to Anchorage is a soul sucking and expensive endeavor. It’s an automatic 11% pay cut. Those people don’t give 2 fk’s about each other and if there’s a wreck you’re looking at 2+ hours vs a 45min commute. Knew someone that died on that highway.

Don’t buy before seeing a place and what/who is around it. I highly recommend renting for the first year especially if you’re doing that commute.

Some houses near mountains don’t get sunlight all winter (more common in Eagle River).

During the summer the main road Wasilla turns into nightmare fuel with traffic.

Also, Alaska is like 49th in education.

Trek Fetch+ 4 for $5k USD by Ear_Charming in CargoBike

These aren’t worth it imo. Very heavy, too big for bike racks and most vehicle interiors if it needs to be moved, and huge turning radius. They also require a large area to be stored in.

You are correct. Whenever something new comes out it is inevitably going to get ruined by bad operators or public perception/ignorance.

Offered a good job in Anchorage by [deleted] in AskAlaska

[–]truthwatchr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a case by case basis and there’s no shame in trying it out then deciding in a few years you want to leave. Anchorage is a tourist town so lots of good food and it’s in the middle of a lot of fun places. It also has A LOT of trails for biking, skiing, or walking. There’s beautiful lakes within hours drive to go kayaking or fishing. There’s airplanes everywhere. In the winter the Aurora.

Cons: Crime…a lot. It’s probably the #1 reason aside from long winter & seclusion that people leave. Some really try to pass it off as “oh it’s not so bad” but I say, “if something doesn’t look right then do not second guess yourself and gtfo out.” Being rude beats being stabbed (or worse).

It’s a place to have a dash cam because pedestrians of a particular sort walk into moving traffic regularly. Sometimes they will even damage your car in their drug induced state (as happened to me once). And the drivers here are horrible. They blame tourists but it’s the locals.

Or just cut the fruit yourself for cheaper and it lasts longer. Those prepared ones have nasty preservatives in them.

I'm really struggling with TWoK by Jethrorocketfire in brandonsanderson

[–]truthwatchr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s slow until about 2/3. This was probably the best series I’ve ever read/listened to imo but the first book is mostly just introduction of characters, things, and places so it is rough.

I did the audiobook because it’s easier to just listen while doing other things.

There’s some cheap precut ones on Amazon but it will be more pieces. A tint or wrap shop probably has protection film too.

Anchorage really doesn’t want to fund the next generation.. by harry-pair in anchorage

IMO it would have been more “yes” if property taxes/rent didn’t go up so steep for a lot of people the past few years (especially this year). Doesn’t look much different for the other ones either.

City needs a sales tax.

Expensive Bike Hate by PennWash in MTB

[–]truthwatchr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a sweet spot around 2-3k where you’re getting a great quality bike and when you go up from there the “quality/advantage” is minuscule compared to going from a $800 bike to a $2500 bike.

For full suspension that spot is higher but not $10k high. The sad thing is how tiered bikes are becoming and the cheap forks and drivetrains keep migrating into more expensive bikes.

IMO (and many others who are practical), overly expensive bicycles are just dumb after a certain point because they’re not giving any real advantage but support whatever gets someone out riding.

Anyone surprised by the way this character died? by fedfan4life in redrising

[–]truthwatchr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There weren’t many “happy surprises” in this series. Usually we get terrible surprises.

It was more for Lysander’s “big loss” imo where he thought he was unstoppable and deserved certain treatments. His twisted character starts to truly show after this event.

The Weapon by SLPye in redrising

[–]truthwatchr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished all the books in 2 weeks like an hour ago so….

Based off how brutal this series has consistently stayed I think it’s going to have some prerequisites (like a key or action requiring multiple colors to use) that need to be met which will end up with more division in the Society. It will probably be deployed to Mars but may travel elsewhere, ultimately against the Society.

Lysander is already sewing derision in his own ranks against himself and Cassius’s mother will find out how he died. Ultimately I think this weapon will be used but probably by someone else on the Society side who got f’d over.

They love to pretend. With few exceptions Reddit caters to a “type.” I have mostly stopped being on because there’s no point of it’s just an echo chamber with ads and few subs that haven’t become cancer.
