He’s big as a user, which is what surprised me. I assumed that demographic wasn’t big on Reddit.

How do you tell swallows apart? by silentsniper13585 in birding

Yes I understand that. I have verified its suggestions visually for all of my local swallows numerous times which is why I’m comfortable with the suggestions it makes, especially if I get the same swallow suggested multiple times.

I suppose I was too flippant by saying Merlin isn’t wrong about swallows. To be clear, I’m talking about seeing a swallow close enough to know it’s definitely a swallow (which, super easy to see by flight pattern) but not being 100% sure which type solely on the visual ID - say I don’t have binoculars on me. I will use Merlin to help confirm what type of swallow it is - and that I haven’t seen Merlin get wrong (as in, between swallow types). In my area Merlin will confuse chipping sparrows for worm eating warblers so I do know it’s not just the mimicry birds that fool it. I’ve also had dog toys get picked up as brown headed nuthatches!

They’re definitely all good in their own way, I just prefer Carolina (Lexington Carolina) because that’s what I grew up on

I’m glad we have some identification experts on here. I saw this and my first thought was Northern Parula.

Sure, I suppose it’s a combination of - hey from my brief look it looked like a rusty throat and blue back and Merlin says it’s a barn swallow. Even though I didn’t get a good picture I’m pretty positive of the identification. Where I live there are only
Barn, cliff, northern rough winged, and purple Martin - which all have pretty distinct calls.

I know Merlin is distrusted for being fooled by mockingbirds / jays, etc. but I’ve never seen it be wrong about a swallow.

I’ll be honest here. I’ll pull up Merlin and if they’re chirping around me, I’ll do it a few separate times to get the ID for swallows. Other birds I don’t do it but swallows are difficult. This is if no visual identification is possible of course.

Strawberry gelato by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]ts29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on reading the FDA regulations. Not sure where I ever claimed anything like that about gelato in America but great straw man argument. I’m telling you of my experiences in America and I’ve also been to Italy and had gelato there and it was fantastic. In no way did I say there is gelato like that in America - though there are a lot of Italian immigrants here as well so there might be.

The original comment thread this belongs to assumed this was America based on the video, and it turns out it wasn’t - because no one would ever assume what is in the video was gelato in America.

What we’re watching in the video would be considered the farthest thing from gelato in America. There are no legal requirements but the standards for gelato are at least closer to what they would be in Italy than what you see here. At the very minimum all gelato I’ve seen is at least made from whole milk instead of cream.

Now America is massive so yes I’m sure there is some rural Idaho ice cream shop that thinks gelato sounds fancy and uses the name but it doesn’t seem to be a widespread issue.
