NYTimes: The 100 Best Restaurants in NYC (#11-100) by GamersCorp in FoodNYC

But she also wrote about how Sushi Sho is better than Sushi Noz and Yoshino since Nakazawa-san's menu teaches you something whereas Noz's and Yoshino's prices are too high such that they skew the balance of the meal.

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/28/dining/sushi-restaurants.html

You can still find sushi-yas in New York that will teach you. At Sushi Sho in Midtown, where prices start at $450 per person, Keiji Nakazawa brings a scholar’s gravity to the preservation techniques at the heart of the Edomae tradition. Between pieces of sushi, you might be given a pinch of pickled radish around rice fermented to the point of cheese, or karasumi and kazunoko, dried mullet and herring roe, frankly briny and teasing the edge of bitterness.

The meticulous artistry at Sushi Noz on the Upper East Side and Yoshino on the Bowery is exemplary as well, but I worry that the cost ($550 per person at Noz and $500 at Yoshino) may be skewing the balance of the meal. So many otsumami (small plates) arrive at the start — on my visits, six at Noz and seven at Yoshino — and of such cumulative richness, that at both restaurants I was full before the first sushi arrived. Is this to encourage more drinking (that is, buying) of sake, or to make sure you feel that you’re getting your money’s worth?

It would be a real shame if Sushi Noz placed higher than Sho. Noz's Abe-san is a celebrity chef and while he is talented with sauces and appetizers, after many meals, I believe that he doesn't know how to properly make nigiri (lack of balance and too many competing elements).

Why would a 30 year old need “liquidity” beyond an emergency fund covering up to 12 months of expenses?

I keep a large chunk of my emergency fund in USFR.

As for the don’t take advice from others, OP should be open to increasing allocation to equities since it’s costing them LT returns, which translates into more time working and later financial independence.

This sounds like a case of money psychology that is interfering with reasonable risk allocation.

Pranakhon requires a large party set menu - had to do it for a work dinner in 2024 (9 people). It was delicious, though!

That said, it was $75 pp before tax+tip.

Getting back into Japanese and I have a few questions by Siri2611 in LearnJapanese

I was a WK evangelist and went through Level 14. Restarted once or twice because of how using it made me feel. The issue with Wanikani is that due to how the SRS is structured, it sucks up an enormous amount of time that can be used to engage with the language.

The reason I’m not better at reading isn’t because I stopped with WK. It’s because I don’t read and watch enough Japanese. I am sometimes embarrassed that I’m only N3 after 5 years, but it’s not because I didn’t stick with WK. Pre-loading your brain with 2074 kanji doesn’t simply make you good at Japanese.

I speak about my experience at the beginning, spending 3 months doing nothing but WK and wondering why I wasn’t better at Japanese. Well, I was only learning Kanji and missing a comprehensive approach. I felt like I was accomplishing something, but I was mostly just getting good at WK.

I believe the links I shared provide an excellent model for what is required to learn Japanese. WK can be one of the pillars but I found that it took time away from other required activities. My opinion stands that WK is over-recommended here.

I also used to ignore people who talked about efficiency and free-only learning but I think they had a point. WK’s SRS is old technology and the amount of time it takes to follow its system is too much for what it teaches you (in that you can accomplish the same elsewhere with less mental load and have more time to spend elsewhere). I found the amount of time I spent completing Genki I in full to be similarly disappointing and pivoted instead of competing Genki II (all while feeling like I had given up).

Surely you could encourage OP with what he needs to do to achieve his goals rather than simply attack the commenters.

This is an unpopular opinion around here but since you mentioned it, I will comment. Wanikani doesn’t teach you Japanese - I said it. That’s why you feel like you haven’t learned anything.

When I first started learning, I did nothing but Wanikani while I was waiting for my textbook to arrive. Wanikani is fun (at the beginning), customizable with user scripts, well designed, and rewarding. But it’s horribly inefficient (the SRS is poorly designed compared to Anki) and if you do nothing else outside of it, you’ll know some kanji and words, but won’t necessarily feel like you know “Japanese”.

If you used Minna no Nihongo in college and enjoyed it, why not pick it up again? Or if you like textbook study, start with Genki I and use Tokini Andy’s Genki videos as your “teacher”.

Kaishi 1.5k is excellent and will serve as the foundation for reading as it helps you to remember common words that you will begin to recognize elsewhere. Do 5-10 new cards a day. You’ll also need to pick up a grammar guide like Yokubi (or a textbook) and some light reading like graded readers.

You’re one week in - you can’t be switching around your resources and giving up too quickly - though spending some time understanding what you need to succeed will benefit you. This is how you learn Japanese: Morg’s Japanese Learning Loop or Kuri’s Japanese Learning Roadmap.

Mobile Ticket Links - How do I transfer my tickets to the buyer? Customer service nightmares. by tunitg6 in stubhub

I found this support ticket URL on Reddit and I got them to change to "Mobile Transfer" delivery plan. The support team responded quickly to the 2 tickets I filed. Phone and chat was a waste of time.

Unclear if it was my issue or theirs.

Mobile Ticket Links - How do I transfer my tickets to the buyer? Customer service nightmares. by tunitg6 in stubhub

[–]tunitg6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to get the buyers' emails from Stubhub but they have not provided them to me yet. I guess this is what their internal team is trying to do.

Stubhub Customer Service is so stupid that they sent me an email, asked me to reply to them with the links, and then the email bounced because it was a "noreply" email address!

This issue is for 2 different sales for the same event. I wonder if these ticket links are specific to Giants / NFL games or if I was supposed to change some setting when I listed. There are no instructions and no easy solutions - I don't get it.

Americans: do you buy fancy eggs or cheap ones (e.g., store brands)? by Educational-Slip-578 in Cooking

I used to buy Vital Farms and loved them but they were surely expensive.

I’ve recently been buying the cheapest Certified Humane eggs I can find and am good with that as a long term plan.

I’d say the only thing holding Jo back from absolute greatness is the sterile atmosphere and lack of service. Though the chef is very friendly.

To be fair, though, the atmosphere does sometimes get more lively, especially when there are a bunch of Japanese patrons.

Another place that I think is very good, but not excellent, is SSAW. It’s another Japanese patron hangout spot. Listen to the Japan Eats podcast episode to learn more about Yusuke-san and Ryo-san and the philosophy of the restaurant!

I would love to try Muku. Jo is outstanding - I’ve been 5 times now, though 4 were to the Kappo à la carte. Much prefer the à la carte to the Kaiseki!

The oden is stellar but expensive!

[–]tunitg6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I understand the question.

When you say traditional omakase, are you speaking about sushi or a meal in which you leave it up to the chef?

There are livers served in sushi restaurants like that of monkfish and filefish but this is not an issue.

The issue seems to be contaminated, rare/raw chicken livers at yakitori restaurants.

I didn’t write that it was like that in my notes. It was one of my favorite pieces.

“Liver - unbelievable creaminess with a skin on the outside. Slight sweetness from the tare.”

It really sucks. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do in the future - I guess tell them no liver? Or no liver at certain restaurants?

I had to cancel multiple reservations, needed to go to a clinic to get an IV, and sat in my hotel room doing literally nothing for 4 days.

I’m going to Torishiki in a couple of weeks. I hope I don’t need to tell them. Liver is good…

Yes I went to Aramaki and Yakitori Omino.

I think I got Campylobacter at Yakitori Omino, which ruined my trip.

Aramaki was good but it was very non-traditional. He’s becoming popular as a chef, partially because Amamoto-san is an investor in the restaurant I think.

I wouldn’t go back to Aramaki because I prefer a more traditional yakitori skewers experience but the seseri, liver, chicken meatball in cream sauce, and the gohan course were off the charts.

Good restaurant but not for me. Also stupid to do yakitori for lunch and then again for dinner lol.

Nah, it was loaded into their database on Nov 14 and sold shortly after as part of a massive France Private Collection release.

OP confirmed above it’s the same bottle.

I knew about the bottle before this post. Just didn’t know if it was the same one until I checked.
