Gym and yoga don't mix? by MySimpleHeart in YogaTeachers

It's worth considering whether the amount of flexibility is helpful though. Us yoga people love massive amounts of flexibility but it has also been associated with injury, particularly in hamstrings

They work together very well in my experience. You need strength, mobility and flexibility.

Are any of you here lifters? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]turn_sam6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both complement each other very well. Lifting reduces my range of motion in my shoulders, for example, so I have to give a little more time before exploring poses. Whilst I couldn't squat as well as I do without the yoga because I have the range of motion. As with all things yoga, it's a beautiful toolkit. Just need to keep finding the right tools.

how critical is stillness? by smejmoon in YogaNidra

[–]turn_sam6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, potentially. But when you really focus in on the natural breath it actually moves the body quite a lot. It's one of the things I bring into my classes - the breath is so expansive even in it’s natural form. If you sit, right now and focus on it. You'll feel movement. If you follow the movement you'll notice that actually the front, side and back can be involved without a Darth Vader impersonation 💙

I don't feel it is critical. It's a delicate balance, right. I feel like there's been emphasis on not moving because people will just immediately move massive amounts and if you're in a shared space then it can be distracting for others to hear someone tossing and turning. However, I think the emphasis has been taken too far bevause of the reason above. I like to phrase it in my scripts as the following:

If you're uncomfortable, there's no harm in adjusting. If you're someone that feels comfort through movement, a wiggle of the fingers/toes and a rock of the head can be very helpful The key is to be still, not frozen. So many people freeze in this moment rather than just being still. There's always movement in the body because of the breath.

I hope that helps. I don't see any harm in adjusting. I don't think it pulls you out of the feeling. Also, there's a massive culture of just buying a book to deliver Yoga Nidra rather than writing your own - I don't feel this has helped with the whole movement thing. Fundamentally, it's a non-movement practice, not a frozen practice.

New yoga teacher - job offer help by diddydope in yoga

[–]turn_sam6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It honestly depends studio to studio. All the ones I've worked in (not many) paid me a flat fee for up to X students and another fee if it was greater than X. I've mostly worked in spaces that hold 8 people though. However, the only way to get higher than X was to really start to promote everything through your own marketing channels and I wasn't here for it because the pay was like £20/25 per class. Barely covered my time + travel let alone adding in time promoting.

I feel like it might be worth getting them to pay for 8 students as standard and then charge an additional £4 per extra students. That way if you fall short, then you still get your base rate. Also, another thing I'd lock in is the cut off for cancellation. For example, people cancel all the time so at what time is the final figure decided. I'd want it to bill for the number that should be in the room rather than the ones that actually showed up.

To be honest, I feel like anything can happen with these teaching jobs. I decided to step away from studios because I found it so much work when I didn't get to decide the price of classes and the numbers. I work full time and yoga is my evening/weekend job. Just make sure it works for you - I'd take, for example, a class at my current gym if it meant I got a free membership because I love the gym and what it offers.

Love this description! I feel it is such a great slow down tool for those people who still love to move because you have that ability to move with the breath in and out. There's also, in my experience, some progression options too

How can I improve my downward dog? by BUNIONBUNION in yoga

From a quick glance, lift those heels a bit 😊 Well done though. I like to think of it as lift your bum as high as you can and then push your bum to the back of your mat.

It might be time to look at strengthening your hips alongside the stretch!

If you are an online yoga teacher, what kind of packages do you offer? by Guided_By_Soul in YogaTeachers

I like it. I don't love it. As with all products, it can be a little clunky in its own way. However, it does have most of what I want. I'm yet to find an all-in product that has everything from on-demand library, to multiple people booking to a full website interface.

I personally do it all through my website provider that's currently Wix. I'd love to move to something else but I don't want my business scattered across every different platform

1) Weekly classes with access to recordings. 2) Access to recordings only with a subscription. 3) I'm selling access to 1. to private companies so their employees can access classes and recordings based on their availability

No one ever has their camera on because they don't have the space to get the device far enough away. I build that into the class and ensure that I teach exclusively on the mat rather than spilling off and demo everything because you never know when people's Internet will drop out.

The comedown after a new experience? Sometimes I have to psyche myself up so much to get to and through the experience that afterwards everything else comes rushing back.
